The Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI) last night held an audience appreciation event at the Causeway Bay Times Square UA cinema with artists Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Samantha Ko Hoi Ning, Stanley Fung Shui Fan and Mak Cheung Ching. Last night was also this UA cinema's final day of operation. Chi Wai said that it was no big deal as it will only relocate upstairs. As for the current location being rented to a high end retail store, Chi Wai pointed out that it proved Hong Kong tourism was doing well. Did he feel that they had too many high end retail stores? He pointed out that different people spent differently, taking care of everyone would be the best. He said that Europe and Japan high end stores did poor business, but Hong Kong was doing well. Of course it was better for tourists to come to Hong Kong than elsewhere.

Did Ko Hoi Ning's first love take place at this cinema? She said that it was not here, but at the time she went to a movie with a guy and started dating. Ko Hoi Ning was sorry that last night was this cinema's final day. Fung Shui Fan said that he did not have much memory of this cinema because at his time the cinema screens were enormous. Louis Koo Tin Lok and Sammi Cheng Sau Man earlier went to Shangri-La, Yunnan to work on the film ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II). When the film started production it was late winter and early spring, the mountain was filled with snow. With the high altitude the production was more difficult. Many workers fell ill due to the thin air. Goo Jai and Sammi had many running scenes in the mountains, luckily they did not have altitude sickness. Sammi said, "Goo Jai and I had to run on the mountains, he even had to carry me and run. However I am used to exercising so I was OK."

With her asthma, Sammi this time took nebulizer with her to Yunnan but she did not need to use them. When she and Goo Jai went to the Emei Mountain for LOVE FOR ALL SEASONS (BAK NIN HO HUP). Michael Hui Koon Man yesterday appeared on a Commercial Radio interview. To raise fund for Suicide Prevention Services he will perform a stand up comedy show at the Hong Kong Coliseum. On the program he joked about his late friend Anita Mui Yim Fong. "Ah Mui after passing told me in a dream that God is a woman."

Hui Koon Man remembered when Ah Mui was alive she said that men no matter they are handsome or ugly, rich or poor love to "screw around". Ah Mui's dream guy had to be rich and handsome, but she did not run into him in her lifetime. John Chong Sees Sing Yeh As Favorite To Break YOU Record

Sing fans have been starved for four years so his new film will have hope to regain the glory of Hong Kong. Media Asia vice chair John Chong Ching favors the idea, but Derek Yee Tung Sing and Universe Entertainment company boss Daneil Lam Siu Ming disagree. They deeply feel that Hong Kong film will have difficulty with creating another miracle locally. Looking north to China gives Hong Kong film professionals a new direction, but when they accommodate Mainland viewer tastes Hong Kong audience's "co-production" resistance becomes a burden. Hong Kong film is dying, you know?

Daneil Lam Is Less Optimistic About Stephen Chow

Many, including Giddens Ko, hope Chow Sing Chi's new film NEW CHINESE ODYSSEY will break YOU's record. Chong Ching feels it will have a chance. "Sing Yeh is so talented, with all the starving Sing fans the box office will have certain motivation."

Derek Yee: Non Co-Production Has Financing Difficulties

Lam Siu Ming does not feel that Chow Sing Chi's CHINESE ODYSSEY will be able to break YOU's record. "Sing Yeh's last film CJ7 (CHEUNG GONG CHUT HO) struggled to pass 50 million at the box office. Actually this isn't Chow Sing Chi's problem, but the overall market's problem. This is the general trend, everyone have to 'co-productions'. Hong Kong viewers want to see Hong Kong films, but don't want to see any 'co-production'. Yet now basically everything is 'co-production'. Without co-production movies don't have funding. Film ultimately is a merchandise, if you make a Hong Kong film with a 10 million budget you can't even hire actors. Now actors are used to making 'Yun Jai' (RMB), how can they be willing to accept 2 million in salary? If you don't approach them, plenty of directors in the Mainland would; you can't make movies that cost more than 50 million either, with only the Hong Kong market it is impossible. You can't go back. Ultimately no one is willing to invest in a purely Hong Kong film, this is a problem of the chicken and the egg! Even Chow Sing Chi has to make 'co-productions'. CJ7 was a co-production, Universe this year will make a few movies, all of which will be 'co-productions'."

Yee Tung Sing agrees with Lam Siu Ming, "co-production" is at fault for Hong Kong film market's fall. "'Co-productions' have subject restrictions, many subjects can't be made and movies can't speak freely. The results often lack power and become terrible to watch. Helplessly non 'co-productions' have difficulties with financing. If you spend 10 million on a purely Hong Kong film, it will be very hard to make and won't be attractive. I want to make PROTEGE (MOON TOH) sequel and ONE NITE IN MONGKOK (WONG GOK HAK YEH) continuation, but when the subjects get to the Mainland market I don't want to accommodate the Mainland market and change the concept and certain plots." He feels that the world goes round and round, Taiwan film has fallen for 20 years and now finally has shaken itself off. Hong Kong films look north and accommodating the Mainland market has become an inevitable fact. Because the Mainland population the box office return is strong. Last year the box office reached 13 billion yuan RMB, naturally it has more investors as funding floods in; he believes after a few battles the film industry will look completely different.

Although Chow Sing Chi's NEW CHINESE ODYSSEY is a 'co-production', everyone still is waiting for Hong Kong film to return to glory. The film costs over 100 million yuan and finally has completed production after more than three months. Currently it is conducting massive post production special effect production in Korea. It should be able to be released this year.

Media Asia Invades the Mainland

Chong Ching feels that YOU was a coincidence, only a movie that is suitable for young people. He also believes that Giddens Ko will not deliberately make a movie to break a record. "If he deliberately makes a movie to break YOU's box office, the movie may not be good. Thus Media Asia's future big films first have to be good movies. Future movies will still target the Mainland market, including the 100 million Johnnie To Kei Fung directed, Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man starred BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM), Lin Chiling and Lau Tak Wa starred DWELLING ON THE FUCHUN MOUNTAINS. Both are 'co-productions' because minding only the Hong Kong market truly is very dangerous."

Film in order to accommodate the Mainland market, will Hong Kong film have difficulty recovering its lost ground? Chong Ching says, "This is a return rate issue, Mainland return rate is high. Sammi Cheng Sau Man and Louis Koo Tin Lok's most memorable scene in ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II) took place in 6 degrees below zero Celsius. One ran while the other one drowned. In the scene Sammi saw Koo Tin Lok from afar and thought her long lost husband returned home. Seeing Goo Jai soaking in the spring, she immediately ran over, pulled him up and saved his life.

When they shot the scene in Shangri-La, the temperature was only six below zero. For such an icy and snowy feel, director Johnnie To Kei Fung deliberately chose the coldest time to shoot in. Sammi earlier in the shoot has already entered her character. In this scene her emotions completely flooded out. Sammi said, "Actually my first take already had a lot of explosiveness. After that I already felt like I was going to collapse." Finally the director still wanted Sammi to make ten more takes. Poor Sammi had to run, cry, yell and pull Goo Jai from the hot spring.

Goo Jai did not have an easy time either because he had to wear layer after layer of clothing and soaked his entire body into the spring water. Although that was a hot spring, with all the wet clothing Goo Jai was still fine in the hot spring. As soon as he left it the feeling was unusually hard to take as it was frighteningly cold. Actually he did not soak in the spring for long, instead Sammi took more time to drag him out of the spring. He felt very chilly. Goo Jai said, "Actually I really just let Sammi pull me, I had to play like I was completely unconscious. I was heavy so Sammi had a very tough time. With the hot spring I really didn't want her to drag me out. However because I had to be face down in the water, if she didn't drag me up I couldn't breath. I had mixed emotions throughout the scene!" After the scene, the team wrapped them both up tight, brought them into the house and used all the heat pads and heaters for them to get warm.

TVB and Shaw's third Lunar New Year film collaboration I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 as of 4PM yesterday reached 9.364 million at the box office, the best among Hong Kong films. After last year the box office has been estimated to pass 10 million. Thus next Monday a celebration will be held. THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN)'s box office so far is 7.794 million while ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI)'s box office is 4.568 million.

The Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association yesterday announced the 2012 Spring Festival holiday box office (January 22 to 25) as HK$47,012,740 in total, a 5.9% increase from the same period last year; however, this Spring Festival foreign films dominated as Hollywood 3D film JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND beat out Chinese films and animation of the same period for the top spot.

This Spring Festival slot had 8 film releases, JOURNEY 2 THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND performed the best. Over the 4 day holiday it made HK$14,158,846, as of the 25th its cumulative box office was HK$20,049,092.

The Eric Tsang Chi Wai produced Shaw Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI) came in second with HK$7,541,083 over the holiday and accumulated HK$8,804,008. It left its rival the Raymond Wong Pak Ming produced comedy ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI) in the dust. ALL's holiday box office was HK$4,536,450 and cumulative box office was HK$5,423,774. Chi Wai and Wong Pak Ming have engaged in a battle of words every year over their Lunar New Year films. Chi Wai this year won again, a third year of victory over Wong Pak Ming.

Animation PUSS IN BOOTS made HK$6,583,185 over the holidays, crushing by 470,000 the Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) starred Hong Kong action film THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN)'s holiday box office of HK$6,113,242 for third place; however, THE VIRAL FACTOR's cumulative box office was HK$8,626,689, which exceeded PUSS IN BOOTS' HK$7,630,722. Thus in the upcoming weekend they still had hope to catch up with momentum.

However, two other animated films KOKURIKOZAKA KARA and THE MUPPETS only had average performance with HK$2,022,120 and $997,994 respectively. Their cumulative box office numbers were HK$3,651,924 and HK$1,342,627 on the bottom of the chart.

Big time director Zhang Yimou's THE FLOWERS OF WAR perhaps due to its earlier Mainland release has already been seen through different channels. With the taste difference its Hong Kong release has been
mediocre. Over the holiday it made HK$2,668,752 and accumulated HK$4,561,952, slightly better than KOKURIKOZAKA KARA and THE MUPPETS.

The Berlin Film Festival yesterday announced that the Doze Niu Chen-Zer directed romantic comedy LOVE has been selected to participate in this year's festival. On February 16 Niu Chen-Zer will promote the film in Berlin with Mark Chao (Chiu Yau Ting).

Yesterday it opened and already made 400,000 at the box office before noon as its admission rate was over 90%. With the three day advanced screening it made 1.2 million, a conservative estimate of the cumulative box office so far it might already have broken the 2 million mark. It even was on top of the Malaysia box office and the top Chinese film in Singapore. Since other Lunar New Year films I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI) made 440,000 and ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI) made 400,000, the victory was overwhelming.

Director Dante Lam Chiu Yin honestly said that he was satisfied with the performance so far but he remained nervous. Yesterday he even stayed by his computer to "check numbers". The Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI) premiere took place last night. Over 80 actors were on hand. To match the theme of "joy upon joy", actors Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Teresa Mo Shun Kwan, Bosco Wong Chung Chak, Samantha Ko Hoi Ning and others all appeared in Chinese wedding costumes. Chi Wai even announced the good news that yesterday the single show box office was 220,000, beating ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI)'s 120,000.

The actors walked the red carpet as the event arranged for lion and dragon dances. Chi Wai said that everyone was very happy after putting Chinese wedding costumes. In the past two years, Chi Wai's Lunar New Year films have defeated Raymond Wong Pak Ming's. Was he confident this year? The Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) and Lin Peng starred film THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) received Malay police department's flight team support as they shot at the Police flight team headquarter and borrowed several helicopters and pilots. They even had 7 police officers who personally performed. Ting Fung and Chairman Chou had to perform a series of stunts on the helicopter. Chairman Chou was frightened when the helicopter suddenly flew on its side. Because at the time he did not put on his seat belt and the cockpit door was not closed, if he did not tightly hold on he definitely would have been flying. Ting Fung pointed out that when he helped Lin Peng to the helicopter he almost had an accident and flew out of the helicopter. Trendy mother Kelly Chen Wai Lam in ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 (BAK SING PO HEI) played a photographer. Because it was her first comedy and the character had potential, she thought it was a lot of fun.

Kelly in the film in order to coax Louis Koo Tin Lok into being her nude model was dressed like Lara Croft in one moment and a beer girl in another. Because Kelly was already pregnant during the shoot, her belly began to grow. However she had to dress up so costumes had to have special arrangements. Kelly said, "After trying on all the costumes, no one realized that I was pregnant." Speaking of working together, Kelly pointed out that they truly set of a lot of spark. "In one scene, Goo Jai only wore nude shorts. I had to cover him up with my head while taking his pictures. It was both awkward and very funny. Seeing his body I really wanted to touch it, haha."

The 6th Asian Film Award will take place on March 19th. Yesterday the nominations were announced. The Tsui Hark directed FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP) received the most nominations with seven. As for Best Actor and Best Actress, A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH)'s multiple Best Actress award winner Deanie Ip Tak Han was the favorite. After her Golden Horse Award, she and YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYES' new generation goddess Michelle Chen will battle for the crown. Andy Lau Tak Wa also with A SIMPLE LIFE will face FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE's Chen Kun and Japan's Koji Yakusho for Best Actress. Ko Chen-Tung only received a Best new Actor nomination.

The award ceremony press conference took place yesterday. Attending guests included the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society chair Wong Ying Wai, Hong Kong Film Development Council chair Jack So Zak Kwong, vice chair Peter Lam Kin Ngok and jury chair Eric Khoo (Yau Kam Hoi). FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE received seven nominations including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Art Direction, Visual Effects and Costume Designs. Zhang Yimou's FLOWERS OF WAR and Wei Te-Sheng's WARRIORS OF THE RAINBOW: SEEDIQ BALE each received six nominations. The Golden Globe Best Foreign Film Award winner A SEPARATION received five nominations.

As for Best Picture, the Golden Globe winner A SEPARATION naturally is the favorite, but competition FLOWERS OF WAR and SEEDIQ BALE both have substance. Best Actress conceivably has to go to A SIMPLE LIFE Ip Tak Han, Michelle Chen could only play along. Instead A SEPARATION's Leila Hatami was seen as the dark horse. The Best Actor competition could be said as strong, FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE's Chen Kun and A SIMPLE LIFE's Lau Tak Wa both had substance. Ko Chen-Tung blew up with YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE but did not receive a Best Actor nomination. He only received the Best New Actor nomination and competed with FLOWERS OF WAR's Ni Ni.

Competing for Best Actress again, Ip Tak Han said, "To me being able to participate in a movie isn't easy, the movie receiving an invitation to compete is a bonus." Fellow nominee Lau Tak Wa said, "I am very honored, I know the fellow nominees are very strong. Chen Kun obviously is a good actor who I am more familiar with. In addition, the Iranian actor has already won Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival. His film A SEPARATION also just won the Golden Globe Best Foreign Film. His momentum is very strong. I am already very happy about the nomination. I have even more confidence in Best Actress nominee Sister Deanie winning, and Ann (Director Hui On Wa) will also receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Nominated for Best Supporting Actress with FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE, Kwai Lun-Mei said that this was her first acting nomination so she would cherish it and be grateful for it. Singer Denise Ho Wan Si in recent years tried making movies and performing on the stage, both had good responses. Most recently Ah Si participated in the Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG 2012 (2012 NGOR OI HK HEI SEUNG GA HEI) and worked with comedy veterans like Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Teresa Mo Shun Kwan, and Stanley Fung Shui Fan; which made Ah Si feel very happy, Sister Mo even praised her for having comedy potential. Ah Si said that she was very dull, loved rotten gags, homonyms, only her usual cool image misdirected everyone.

Ah Si said that usually she looked very cool, so when she played comedy or more exaggerated characters everyone would say actually Ah Si was like this. Actually this was her true nature. She said, "Let me try and change to become comedy singer." In the past Ah Si made the Lunar New Year LOOK FOR A STAR (YAU LUNG HEI FUNG), but that was a romantic comedy. This was a pure comedy.

Speaking her lackluster performance at the award shows last year, would she make more movies in the future instead? She said, "Last year's performance was close to my goal, it wasn't bad! In the film Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam played a weightlifter Li Li who retired due to diabetes and fell in love with a divorcee whose business failed, To Man Jat. In the film Ah Jat tossed aside his usual comedy image and played a good man who gave his all for his wife and made money alone for the family. Kong Yeuk Lam also fell for Ah Jat's good man image. During the shoot she felt very warm and very fortunate. After the shoot she was reluctant to part with this good "hubby".

Kong Yeuk Lam in order to bring to life the weightlifter kept eating to gain weight. She also accepted a series of hellish weightlifting training and strengthened her arms. THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) will soon open in Hong Kong. Director Dante Lam Chiu Yin and Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) earlier went to promote in Malaysia and Singapore. They first went to Malay and met with fans in the afternoon. Fans were very excited to be in close contact with their idol Chow Kit Lun. Then they attended a shopping center promotion. The 2012 Miss Chinese International Pageant took place last night at the Tseung Kwan O Television City. The title went to the Chicago representative, candidate 11 Kelly Cheung Hei Man. The first runner up was the Singapore representative Cheryl Wee (Wong Hing Wai) and the second runner up was the Fala Chen look a like Kuala Lumpur representative Lenna Lim (Lam Ka Bing). She also won "Asia Pacific Modern Glamour Award" and "Miss Cosmopolitan". Hong Kong representative Rebecca Zhu won the "Greater China Classic Elegance Award".

Last night Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Astrid Chan Chi Ching and MC Jin were the hosts, the judges were Michael Tse Tin Wa, Myolie Wu Hung Yi, Angela Leong On Ki, Kwok Law Kwai Chun, and Lam Man Kit. The program began with a Raymond Lam Fung music number that led 28 candidates into their self introduction. Then the candidates were divided into the Asia Pacific Region, the Europe America Region and the Greater China Region. Each region had a newly added award. The Asia Pacific Modern Glamor Award went to the Kuala Lumpur representative Lenna Lim, the Europe America Vitality award went to candidate 15 New York representative Jasmine Hayter (Hoi Lei Ling) and the Greater China Classic Elegance Award went to candidate 26 Hong Kong representative Rebecca Zhu.

After the swimsuit competition, "Miss Congeniality" went to candidate 17 Toronto representative Ashton Hong (Hung Mei San). Miss Cosmopolitan went to Lenna Lim. Then ten semifinalists were announced. Chi Wai added to the intense and made the candidates announced the last five. Candidate 19 Vancouver representative Erica Chui whose father is Tsui Siu Keung was not in top ten, which included Bianca Lam, Biliya Wiriyapan, Lenna Lim, Aliya Fan, Cheryl Wee, Kelly Cheung, Roro Chen, Jasmine Hayter, Maggie Yu, and Rebecca Zhu. As for YOU being Hong Kong's highest grossing Chinese language film, Chi Wai boasted that he must make a movie to break its record. This time the film used some classic songs, including the Beatles and Alan Tam Wing Lun, because the Beatles' ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE was very close to the movie's theme. However the royalty reached US$200,000. Chi Wai said, "I always thought it was HK$200,000, but it was in American currency. It really rained on my parade. Thus the most expensive part of this film was the song royalty. Because of those royalties the box office would have to make another 6 million more." Was Sister Mo the highest paid in the cast? Chi Wai said, "If not why would she dance the erotic dance? She is showing her career line for the first time, her dance costume is charged by the inch!"

In addition, this film's directors were Chung Shu Kai and Wilson Chin Kwok Wai. They knew each other long ago during their TVB days, so they had even more chemistry when they worked together. Chung Shu Kai also revealed that in the film aside from Sister Mo's erotic dance also had several funny moments, including Denise Ho Wan Si and Wong Chung Chak's cemetery wedding photo session and the kiss between Fung Shui Fan and Shaw Yam Yam as "Shen Chia-Yi". Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun), Lin Peng, Liu Kai Chi, Elaine Kam Yin Ling, Andy On Chi Kit along with director Dante Lam Chiu Yi two nights ago attended THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) premiere at Sky 100. Also on hand were Deborah Li and her husband Moustache Kong, Patrick Tse Yin and others.

The host talked about the venue. Ting Fung joked that he could consider making an action film here, but Chairman Chou joked that he absolutely would not make a sequel because it was too tough. The 18th would be Chairman Chou's birthday and the event arranged for a cake to celebrate with him in advance.

Later Ting Fung stated that with the government's permit he would be willing to jump from here for a movie; would he not have to watch himself more as a father? He said, "I trust the safety of Hong Kong film, we are crazy but not stupid." The director said that the boss would like the box office to reach 400 million. Ting Fung admitted that he neither dared nor knew how to estimate, he had confidence though. Coincidentally Chairman Chou's birthday will be on the 18th. The host asked fans to sing the birthday song, but Chairman Chou said that it was a little embarrassing. Fans ignored him and kept singing. They also played games with the audience.

Chairman Chou said that his birthday wish was for THE VIRAL FACTOR to be this year's box office champion, his written and directed film could be second. Why did he not want it to be number one? Chairman Chou joked, "Because this film is the toughest in my history, I wouldn't let myself to suffer too much so being second is enough!" Chairman Chou also revealed that on his birthday he will attend the film premiere in Taiwan and he planned to invite 50 artists to a party. Will he invite his girlfriend? Charlie Yeung Choi Nei yesterday attended a shopping center New Spring decoration unveiling ceremony. Later she will spend the Lunar New Year with her mother in Taiwan. On this trip back to Hong Kong she also met with her newlywed sister Gigi Leung Wing Kei. This year was Gigi's first year as a married woman and giving away laisee. She joked, "Right, I definitely will ask her for it."

Charlie recently has been busy with directing as she planned for her first new film CHRISTMAS ROSE, which Charlie will write and director and invited directors Tsui Hark and Jacob Cheung Chi Leung to produce. She pointed out that directors Tsui Hark and Cheung Chi Leung taught her a lot of filmmaking knowledge and asked their friends to help. She did not know how to repay them. She also said that her new film from script conception to the production start took three years. She felt that it was not a long time since it was her first time and she did not have any experience. Donnie Yen Chi tan in ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2012 was in a band. He due to the story had to be "Eason Chan Yik Shun possessed" as he reprised his music award show behavior. Chi Tan's look and gestures won a lot of applause. He even uploaded the "award photo" online in support of the film company's recent promotion of the message of love and left a message that he really "loved" film.

Speaking of being a film industry hot property today, Chi Tan recalled almost being bankrupted. "It's hard to forget before and after the 97 financial storm, I funded BALLISTIC KISS (SAT SAT YUN TIU TIU MO) myself.
