[2010.01.03] LOUIS KOO BECOMES BOX OFFICE MIRACLE PILL

The Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association yesterday announced the 2009 film box office. Last year the total box office reached HK$1,177,462,795. In comparison to last year's HK$1,105,673,802, it already increased by 6.5%. The Hong Kong film market was on a gradual rise. Last year 268 films were released in Hong Kong, 51 of which were Hong Kong films.

Hong Kong film's box office was $24,655,832. The Sandra Ng Kwan Yu and Louis Koo Tin Lok starred film ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2009 (GA YAU HEI SI 2009) was in first place. In second place was RED CLIFF II (CHET BIK KUET JIN TIN HA) with $23,713,573. In third was TURNING POINT (LAUGHING GOR ji BIN JIT) with $15,662,535. Other top ten highest grossing Hong Kong films were OVERHEARD (SIT TING FUNG WON) (fourth), STORM WARRIORS (FUNG WON II) (fifth), THE SHINJUKUK INCIDENT (SUN SHOOK SI GEIN) (sixth), LOOK FOR A STAR (YAU LUNG HEI FUNG) (seventh), BODYGUARDS AND ASSASSINS (SUP YUET WAI SING) (eighth), MURDERER (ninth) and ON HIS MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (DAI NOI MUK TAM LING LING GAU) (tenth). However, BODYGUARDS AND ASSASSINS and STORM WARRIORS are still in release so their box office figures have not been confirmed. Among the top ten films, Goo Jai starred in three (ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL 2009, OVERHEARD, and ON HIS MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE) and became the box office miracle drug.

As for foreign films, AVATARS is still in release and has strong momentum. As for December 31, 2009 its box office was already $65,322,518. In second was the TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN with 48 million, in third was 2012 with 47 million. Other top ten highest grossing films included HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE (fourth), UP (fifth), ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS (sixth), A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: THE BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIANS (seventh), THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (eighth), SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (ninth), PONYO ON THE CLIFF BY THE SEA (tenth).
