Mainland films have hardly ever performed well at the Hong Kong box office. The Feng Xiaogang directed AFTER SHOCK is this year's big national film that moved the July 28, 1976 morning Tangshan earthquake to the silver screen. Yesterday it opened on 24 screens and 119 shows and it made 550,000. Although the performance was not match for TOY STORY 3's 40 million in eight days, its admission rate was over 70% and the best of the day. Hong Kong viewers has hardly ever accepted Mainland drama. AFTER SHOCK under this condition still had high admission rate. With the decent word of mouth from the advanced screenings and without massive distribution, the performance was already considered ideal.
