The Louis Koo Tin Lok and Raymond Lam starred movie BACK TO THE PAST (CHUM CHUN GEI) would open on December 31st, continuing the story of the 2001 TVB drama A STEP INTO THE PAST with Koo Tin Lok as the producer. Aside from some of the returning original cast members, new characters have also been added like mainland actor Bai Baihe, Michael Miu Kiu Wai, Louis Cheung Kai Chung, Kevin Chu Kam Yin and Timmy Hung Tin Ming. Yesterday, the film company released the BACK TO THE PAST poster and the video of Koo Tin Lok and Lam Fung recording the theme song "The Highest Destiny". Dick Liu Kai Chi appeared in one of his final films BACK TO THE PAST's ensemble poster, and "Dr. Wu" was placed in the front row of the poster to pay tribute to his contributions to the series and movies.
The movie poster featuring the full lineup of BACK TO THE PAST was released yesterday. Passed away in 2021 due to stomach cancer, Liu Kai Chi reprised his series role "Dr. Wu" and was place in the front row on the poster in honor of his contributions to both the series and the movie. The internet have been buzzing about the poster design: the giant landscape in the background symbolizes the ultimate destiny across more than 2,000 years, while the contrast between Koo Tin Lok's "Hong Siu Lung" in his 'SDU' combat suit and Lam Fung's "King of Qin" in traditional costume highlighted the core conflict between the two characters. At the bottom of the poster, multiple actors were displayed horizontally, showcasing characters from both ancient and modern times in cameo appearances. Some online noted geometric shapes such as squares, circles, triangles, and hexagons marking certain characters, speculating that they might carry special meaning.
Koo Tin Lok originally performed the TV series theme song "The Highest Destiny" for A STEP INTO THE PAST, while the movie theme song is a newly arranged duet version between Koo Tin Lok and Lam Fung. Koo Tin Lok mentioned that singing with Lam Fung this time felt very different from his solo performance back then, describing it as a completely new experience. Lam Fung said that singing "The Highest Destiny" with boss Koo Tin Lok at a previous Hong Kong Coliseum concert served as a kind of warm-up for their current recording. "This time we, of course, take it more seriously; it’s been rearranged. Even this is still a warm-up, a warm-up duet with the boss. We hope to continue having songs that belong to us, preferably with some dance moves as well."
Many viewers said that hearing the prelude of "The Highest Destiny" gives them goosebumps. Koo Tin Lok stated, "The phrase 'The Highest Destiny' represents a mission. Even though they say there is no 'highest' in this world, we strive to achieve our best. It's like making BACK TO THE PAST, during which we encountered many difficulties but overcame them one by one." Lam Fung hoped that the new version would keep the original horse neigh at the beginning, saying, "That horse neigh is a collective memory!" Koo Tin Lok immediately promised, "We'll add it back for you!" The new version of "The Highest Destiny" retained the horse neigh prelude as homage to the original.
The music video for "The Highest Destiny" featured numerous important characters making their debut. Besides the original cast Hong Siu Lung (Koo Tin Lok), King of Qin Chiu Poon (Lam Fung), Wu Ting Fong (Jessica Hsuan), Kam Ching (Sonija Kwok Sin Nei), Sin Yau (Joyce Tang Lai Ming), Tung Yik (Wong Man Piu), "General Tao" Tao Fang (Jimmy Au Shui Wai), and Lee Si (Chan Kwok Bong), it also introduced several new characters for the first time, including Galie (Bai Baihe), Ken (Miu Kiu Wai), Rock (Chueng Kai Chung), Max (Wu Yue), Phil (Hung Tin Ming), Man Song (Fish Liew Chi Yu), and Man Leung (Calvin Choi Yat Chi).
