Juno Mak Chun Lung's directing debut RIGOR MORTIS (GEUNG SI) after 11 days in release made HK$ 11 million in Hong Kong and Macau. The daily take of 1 million encouraged many.
Juno said, "After everyone learn about the category III version, the interest in RIGOR MORTIS is even greater. Some cinemas contacted us directly as they would rather show both the category II B and III versions together, which was quite a surprise." He also said that the film's overseas performance was ideal. "At least 80% have been sold. Actually some investors are already talking about a sequel, but I feel my choice for the next film won't be a similar subject. In addition I have scripts of other topics on my hands."
Although the film was a box office hit, Juno still humbly said, "The success should belong to the entire production team. The list of names I have to thank is really too long. I am the most pleased that this time has proven the Hong Kong film industry actually can accept even more subjects and new blood. (Are you checking the box office everyday?) I really don't want too much pressure. Lately I am used to turning off the phone and resting. Of course I really have received many friends' emails and text messages to congratulate me."
Juno with his two lead actress Chin Siu Ho and Anthony Chan Yau will fly to Taiwan to begin a three day promotion. The media there are also interested in RIGOR MORTIS, thus Juno accepted many interviews to continue to promote in full force. He hoped when the film opens officially on Friday in Taiwan it will be more even successful.
Very obviously, RIGOR MORTIS is a salute to Ricky Lau Koon Wai's 1985 film MR. VAMPIRE (GEUNG SI SIN SUN). As vampire films rose from the ashes, Director Lau is planning a vampire film for a March or April production start. He said, "Juno mentioned him film to me, actually film genre is a cycle. Vampires films were made from 1985 to 1990, viewers got tired. After such a long time they are mad again, naturally they are different. Actually I am in Guizhou to research some information on the Hmong minority tribe to add into the new film." He even said that he has already asked Tsui Hark to produce. The title tentatively will be VAMPIRE QUEEN. "Old Tsui is fixing the story now, and the title will change too. It is estimated to have foreign, Hong Kong and Taiwan artist participation."
