The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards yesterday afternoon announced the nominations in its 19 categories. "Best Actor frequent flyer" Tony Leung Chiu Wai with the Emperor Motion Picture THE GOLDFINGER (GUM SAU JI) received a nomination, in a battle against Bowie Lam Bo Yi who declared that he would have to "sacrifice a chicken to thank god". Michelle Wai Sze Nga was nominated for Best Actress for the firs time; Taiwan star Wu Kang-Ren would compete against Gardner Tse Kwan Ho and others for "Best Supporting Actor".

This year's Hong Kong Film Awards would take place on April 14th at the Cultural Center. Yesterday at the press conference, the event invited Fish Liew Chi Yu, Terrance Lau Chun Him, Henick Chou Hon Ning and Sabrina Ng Bing to be special guests to announce the nominees in the 19 categories.

Among the nominations, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT (BAK YUT JI HA) received 16 nominations including Best Film, Best Director, Actor, Actress and other major categories to become the most nominated film. TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGE (NIN SIU YUT GEI) and THE GOLDFINGER (GUM SAU JI) followed with 12. In addition MAD FATE (MING ONG) and A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) both received 10 nominations. All 5 of the above were nominated for Best Film. As expected, Leung Chiu Wai with GOLD's wild character would fight for the "Best Actor" award with A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG)'s Dayo Wong Tze Wah, DUST TO DUST (DAI BAK GOR YIM YI YUN)'s Da Peng, TIMES STILL TURNS THE PAGES' Siuyea Lo Chun Yip and others. With 37 years in the business, Lam Bo Yi earlier was nominated for the Golden Horse Awards Best Supporting Actor. This time he was "promoted" to the Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor category. When he got the news he was shopping for the Lunar New Year at the market. "I am currently shopping for grocery and New Year stuff at the shopping center and market. When I got a sudden call from the company to tell me I got nominated, I was very happy and very excited. It's really the first time I got such a performance. Just like last time when I said getting the nomination is like winning an award, no, now I am going to the market to buy a chicken to thank the god!"

Leung Chiu Wai replied, "I am very happy to be nominated, thank you to those who voted for me. I also congratulate all the colleagues who are nominated." First time Best Actor nominee Wong Tze Wah was very happy after receiving the news and thanked everyone for their support. Lo Chun Yip said, "Thank you Director and the co-stars for their trust. Being able to experience this creation with the TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGES cast and crew is the happiest thing in recent years."

Lo Chun Yip's nomination was announced by his girlfriend Fish Liew Chi Yu. When she read her boyfriend Lo Chun Yip's nomination, Liew Chi Yu's hands were shaking. She was so moved that she got a little misty eyed. Liew Chi Yu said that she was very embarrassing, as the guest announcer she should calmly face the matter. Yet during the announcement she discovered that her boyfriend was nominated too, so she was very emotional. "I am happy for my boyfriend being nominated. Earlier I was mentally prepared to be a little more graceful if friends I know or he would be nominated, but in the end real emotions flowed!" would she pick her boyfriend to win? She said, "That's very hard to say, everyone are very strong elders. Leung Chiu Wai is there!"

As for both she and Renci Yeung Sze Wing being nominated for Best Supporting Actress with A GUILTY CONSCIENCE, she felt that it would not matter who would win. "Wong Tze Wah with A GUILTY CONSCIENCE has been nominated for Best Actor. I can stand in Tze Wah's glow and walk the red carpet together. Then I could pretend to lose my balance and hold on to him. Because my boyfriend and I are nominated with different movies, we won't be able to walk the red carpet as a couple."

Da Peng after learning about his Best Actor nomination for DUST TO DUST said, "I feel very unreal; it doesn't just put a period at the end of a busy year, but a giant exclamation mark. As a Hong Kong film fan, the Hong Kong Film Awards every year is a particularly important visual in my film memory. Today I actually am fortunate enough to enter this visual, I am very emotional. Hong Kong films have deeply influenced me, shaped me, thank you Hong Kong Film Awards for making my dream come true! Thank you director Li Tsz Chun and everyone on the DUST TO DUST team for their trust, and congratulations to director Li Tsz Chun on the Best New Director nomination."

As for "Best Actress", Wai Sze Nga with READY O/R ROT (BUT YUT SING FUN 2) broke through zero as she would compete against A GUILTY CONSCIENCE's Louise Wong Dan Nei, THE LYRICIST WANNABE (TIN CHI L)'s Chung Suet Ying, BAND FOUR (SEI PAK SEI GA JOOK)'s Kay Tse On Kay and IN BROAD DAYLIGHT's Jennifer Yu Heung Ying. After 15 years in the business, Wai Sze Nga said, "I really wouldn't have guessed it! I truly am very surprised. Thank you to all the professionals who like READY O/R ROT and voted for me. Thank you to everyone of this film, my co-starring actors, the marketing and distribution teams, and especially to Director (Anselm) Chan Mau Yin! It is because of them, the film was able to successfully come in contact with the audience and for everyone to see my effort. Most importantly I want to thank the company Emperor Entertainment for cultivating me for 15 years, I would definitely keep working hard!"

Currently working on a series in the Dominican Republic, Wong Dan Nei said, "I just got the news about the Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actress nomination. I never would have guessed, I am very surprised. This year has many very outstanding films and characters, I am very honored to be nominated with so many outstanding people. I am grateful." She said that she definitely had to thank the film company and the director for giving her the opportunity to play such a challenge character, also the production team for working with her and every viewer who supported the film at the movies. She said, "I am in the Dominican Republic. Although it's very far, I can still feel everyone's love and support. A GUILTY CONSCIENCE was my second movie. Everyone has witnessed my growth, so thank you very much, I would keep working hard."

Jennifer Yu Heung Ying learned that IN BROAD DAYLIGHT received 16 nominations, including Best Actress for her. "After the production wrapped I was already confident." She also mentioned that her junior colleague in the film Hui Yuet Seung recently also joined her company. "I really like this little sister, I truly am very happy for her getting the New Performer nomination. I don't dare to think about winning. I hope my nominated colleagues would win more awards, recognition, everyone has worked very hard to make this movie with a lot of heart." Yu Heung Ying also thanked "Boss Koo" Louis Koo Tin Lok and other investors for being willing to make IN BROAD DAYLIGHT.

Nominated for THE LYRICIST WANNABE (TIN CHI L), Chung Suet Ying said, "I am very happy to be nominate for my first female lead role, entering into this film event. I would keep working hard." Tse On Kay said that she was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Awards for the first time. "My co-worker told me I was nominated for 'Best Actress' and 'Best Original Film Song'. With too many emotions t once, I actually broke down and wailed on the street. This is the first Hong Kong Film Awards nomination of my life, then, slowly, drop by drop I remembered the production and the theme song recording. A lot of experience flooded up. Being nominated with each outstanding actresses and film theme songs is a bonus, a surprise reward and honor that would encourage me to work even harder and harder to play each character well and make even more songs that would touch people's hearts."

Good actor Wu Kang-Ren with FLY ME TO THE MOON (DAN YUEN YUN CHEUNG GAU) was nominated for "Best Supporting Actor", with OVER MY DEAD BODY (SEI SI SEI SI SEI SUP SEI)'s Lee Seung Ching, TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGES' Sean Wong Tsz Lok, A GUILTY CONSCIENCE's Tse Kwan Ho and John Chiang Dai Wai. Wu Kang-Ren earlier with the film won the Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards Best Actor, so this time seemed to be "demoted". Wu Kang-Ren was excited. "I really am super happy. To be able to make a Hong Kong film and be nominated is something I would never dare to imagine in this lifetime. Thank you very much to the Hong Kong Film Awards Association. I look forward to be able to properly chat and learn from Hong Kong filmmakers at the ceremony. I cherish this very much." Tse Kwan Ho said, "Very happy! Thank you to filmmakers who voted for 'Kam Yuen Shan' (film character). When A GUILTY CONSCIENCE opened early last year it performed very well. Earlier I just won with this character the New Era International Film Festival Best Supporting Actor, thank you everyone for your support! On the other hand I am very excited, because this year the Best Supporting Actor nominees are full of masters, being nominated is my honor. Thank you Director Ng Wai Lun for writing such a good script, and for giving me such a good opportunity to play this character. This time A GUILTY CONSCIENCE received 10 nominations! I really am very happy! I would keep working hard, thank you!"

In "Best Director", Felix Chong Man Keung with THE GOLDFINGER with MAD FATE (MING ONG)'s Soi Cheang Pou Soi as elders would face TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGES (NIN SIU YUT GEI)'s Cheuk Yik Him, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT's Lawrence Kan Kwan Chun and A GUILTY CONSCIENCE's Ng Wai Lun. TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGES, MAD FATE, THE GOLDFINGER, IN BROAD LIGHT and A GUILTY CONSCIENCE would vie for "Best Film".

The film A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) received 10 Hong Kong Film Awards Nominations, among them Renci Yeung Sze Wing and Fish Liew Chi Yu both were nominated for "Best Supporting Actress". Yeung Sze Wing in her social media story said, "SO HAPPY" then responded, "I am grateful! I hope everyone would be able to go to the stage together. I really love this GUILTY family very, very much." Liew Chi Yu said, "This movie is one the most important milestones in my performing arts career. Aside from its great box office, now at the Hong Kong Film Awards it also received so many nominations. I really am very happy. During the shoot we were very happy too, from the director we got a lot of energy. I have to thank all the co-stars, good sisters (Louise) Wong Dan Nei and Yeung Sze Wing. I very much am looking forward to walking the Hong Kong Film Awards red carpet together."

Four time Hong Kong Film Awards Best Supporting Actress, Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling) this time again with READY O/R ROT (BUT YUT SING FUN 2) was nominated. Kam Yin Ling said that the experience was different. "The reason that I am very happy this time is, READY O/R ROT's genre and character are very different from every movie I have been nominated with. This is the most special, (the character) doesn't have to be very heavy, all weepy and mopey to be able to get a nomination!"

Rachel Leung Yung Ting was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. "Super happy, very happy that IN BROAD DAYLIGHT getting such a good performance and receiving so many nominations."

The First Feature Film Initiative winning film FLY ME TO THE MOON (DAN YUEN YUN CHEUNG GAU) received 4 nominations. Director Sasha Chuk Chi Ngan movingly said, "The person I want to thank the most is Director Kwan (Stanley Kwan Kam Peng) and Suk Ping (William Chang). Thank you for being willing to teach me what is the language of film. FLY ME TO THE MOON is a very complex screenplay, involving a wide range of regions and actors, the craftiness of language, low budget but still had period scenes, etc. Today it has been able to be completed and received this much help, honestly if not for Director Kwan as the producer, I believe I would have absolutely have no way to achieve the performance today. Under the spotlight, and behind everyone's praises of the film, the film cannot be without the unconditional contribution of Director Kwan, Suk Ping, Chun Shek, and those who battled shoulder to shoulder with us all along the journey: two cinematographers Hok Lun, Ho Fai and post production director King Lun. The screenplay I wrote alone, but the credit of making the screenplay into reality truly belonged to everyone. We were all for one and one for all, and could not without any single one. We would continue to work hard, may I become an excellent filmmaker like all of you."

FLY ME TO THE MOON's Yoyo Tse Wing Yan received a Best New Performer nomination. Wing Yan emotionally said, "I am very grateful for the recognition everyone has given me. I really am very happy. Thank you to everyone on FLY ME TO THE MOON for their contribution that made this movie. I still have a lot to learn, so I definitely would work even harder. Everyone please continue to support FLY ME TO THE MOON!"

The Hong Kong Film Awards Association chair Derek Yee Tung Sing at the press conference said, "As the Hong Kong community returned to normal last year, after all Hong Kong cinemas resumed operations fully, even more movies were able to be released. In 2023 50 Hong Kong films qualified for nominations, an increase of 50% from only 33 films in 2022. Among the films in competition were 20 new directors, as well as many new generation actors." He said, "Now the era has to change, when film production situation is even more difficult and the production budget is tight, everyone's attitude has returned to the passion of making Hong Kong films in the past as they would work in many capacities, and be even more sensible than we were before." He also mentioned that the top ten highest grossing Hong Kong films all made over HK$ 10 million, the top film even set the record of the first Hong Kong film to exceed HK$ 100 million. The performance has been encouraging, and he hoped in the future Hong Kong film would be able to return to normal development. Yee Tung Sing also announced that this year's Hong Kong Film Awards first round voting after accountant verification had a 63.23% voting rate, a new post pandemic high. He urged second round voters to continue their strong support.

As this year's Hong Kong Film Awards creative director, Lawrence Kan Kwan Chun said that the passing of Eric Cheng Kai Tai was regrettable. Every colleague who helped with the Hong Kong Film Awards missed him, because Cheng Kai Tai has been the Hong Kong Film Awards narrator for ten years already. This year originally he would continue, but the news of his death came suddenly. The event has yet to find a suitable replacement. In addition the film Kan Kwan Chun directed, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, received 16 nominations and became the most nominated film. Kan Kwan Chun said that he truly was overjoyed beyond expectation, and has never thought about winning any award. The 16 nominations were already a victory!
