Veteran actor known as "Brother Benz", Benz Hui Siu Hung died of organ failure caused by kidney cancer on the 28th of last month. Yesterday Hui Siu Hung's family held a wake at the Po Fook Memorial Hall in Tai Wai. The service would be a Buddhist ceremony and the funeral would take place the next day. Hui Siu Hung's daughter Charmaine Hui Wai Ching admitted in an interview that her father's death was quite sudden for her family. She got choked up and said that she has promised to take care of her family on behalf of her father, and she emphasized that she would continue to work hard, live a good life, and devote herself to her original job after the process. As for regrets, she admitted that she was not unable to give her father a grandson to hold, and felt that there was not enough time for her to fulfill her filial piety.
The mourning hall was simply decorated, with a photo of Hui Siu Hung in a suit and a smile in the middle, "Forever Remembered" written on the horizontal banner, and written on the memorial cloth hanging on were the names of his daughter Wai Ching and stepson Chun Toi. In front of the altar were wreaths of his wife and children, and a wreath from Hui Siu Hung's goddaughter Charmaine Sheh Sze Man was also placed next to them. The TV in the mourning hall played Hui Siu Hung's film and television works and award acceptance clips during his lifetime.
Although the family has expressed their hope that relatives and friends would make donation in lieu of flowers, the entire mourning hall was filled with wreaths, including wreaths from the Hong Kong Police Force, Hui Tao and all colleagues of the Television Broadcasts Limited, Chow Yun Fat and his wife, Andy Lau Tak Wah, Simon Yam Tat Wah, Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Andrew Lau Wai Keung, Wong Jing, Chin Kar Lok and Angela Tong Ying Ying, Miriam Yeung Chin Wah and Real Ting Tsz Ko, Adam Cheng Siu Chau, Fong Ping and Nina Paw Hee Ching, Kent Cheng Juk Si and his wife, Sean Lau Ching Wan and Amy Kwok Oi Ming, Dayo Wong Tze Wah, Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Gigi Lai Chi, Wilson Lam Chun Kit, Jordan Chan Siu Chun and Cherrie Ing Choi Yee, Patrick Tam Yiu Man, Gallen Lo Ka Leung and his wife, Maggie Siu Mei Lei, Nancy Sit Ka Yin, Marianne Chan Miu Ying, Ron Ng Cheuk Hei and others. Outside the mourning hall a sea of flowers was also formed, with wreaths from Jackie Chan, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Jessica Hester Hsuan (Suen Huen), Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi, Candice Yu On On, Carol Cheng Yui Ling, Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), Raymond Lam Fung, Myolie Wu Hung Yi, Kingdom Yuen King Tan, Ruco Chan Jin Pang and his wife Phoebe Sin Man Yau and others.
The family specifically arranged for a press area for reporters, and artists Maria Lai Chi Shan, Sharon Chan Man Chi and Emily Kwan Bo Wai helped to make arrangements outside the venue. At 3 p.m. yesterday, Eddie Kwan Lai Kit, Jazz Lam Tsz Sin and Mary Hon Ma Lai and her husband arrived at the mourning hall one after another.
Hui Siu Hung's daughter Charmaine Hui Wai Ching was interviewed. She first thanked the media present for their concern, admitted that her father's passing was quite sudden and unreal to everyone and even their family, and thanked all relatives and friends for their love and companionship. Hui Wai Ching noticed that there were many caring messages on the Internet, for which she was very grateful. She got choked up and said, "I promised my father that I would take care of my mother and family on his behalf. My father is the person I am the most proud of. He was a kind person and taught me many life lessons. I still remember him telling me that during the filming of POLICE CADET, he experienced the death of his grandfather, grandmother, and his brother-in-law within a month; but he never troubled any colleagues because of this, nor did he stop working because of it. I will always remember his sense of responsibility and his many strengths. Therefore, I will continue to work hard and live seriously. After properly handling my father's funeral, I will devote 100% to my original job and take good care of my family." She admitted that her and her mother's emotions have not completely calmed down, as they were still trying to accept the fact that her father has passed away. Did her father leave any last words? She said, "They are in my heart. His love and care for us over the years no longer need words to be expressed." As for whether her father had a last wish, she said, "He has always been low-key, sincere and kind-hearted. Therefore, although the current arrangement seems a bit sudden, I believe this is also what he would have wanted."
Hui Wai Ching said that she would not disable her father's social platform, so that the public would be able to continue to remember and miss her father. After she properly handles her father's death, she would upload the short videos and photos she took with her father to the platform and hoped that her father's happy image would last in everyone's hearts. Did she have anything left unsaid to her father, or regretted not being able to fulfill her father's wish to hold a grandson. She got choked up again, her eyes were filled with tears as she said frankly, "This is indeed my regret. My father has been taking care of me with responsibility and love for many years......This is a pity, not having enough time for me to be filial to him." She noted that her father had always supported her in any decision she made, and she was honored to have a hardworking, genuine and caring father. She also mentioned that her father actively learned new things for her during his lifetime, shooting videos with her and uploading them to social platforms. She laughed and said that her father was very obedient to her. "When I was a child my father was busy with work, now I can make videos and play together. These memories are very valuable, and also considered making up for the missed time from before."
At about 5 p.m., Hui Siu Hung's friends in the business arrived one after another, including goddaughter Charmaine Sheh Sze Man, Dayo Wong Tze Wah, Michael Miu Kiu Wai (Sam Gor), Jaime Chik Mei Chun, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Jazz Boon (Man Wai Hung), Shaun Tam Yin Chun, Roger Kwok Chun On, Felix Wong Yat Wah, Edwin Siu Ching Nam, Ben Wong Chi Yin, Akina Hong Wah, Alice Cham Wai, Toby Leung Ching Kei, Le Kwok Lun, Bosco Wong Chung Chak, Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung, etc. Wearing glasses, Ah Sheh did not stop and hurriedly entered the mourning hall. About an hour after Kwok Chun On left, his ex-wife Cindy Au Sin Yi arrived.
Miu Kiu Wai revealed that last year he had dinner at Hui Siu Hung's home. He has always kept his illness a secret. He only learned that it was "such a big deal" when he was admitted to the hospital and he visited Hui Siu Hung that day. Hui Siu Hung's wife was the one who informed him, so it felt so sudden. Sam Gor said that when he went to the hospital, Hui Siu Hung got already in a coma and he was very heartbroken. Sam Gor was choked up as he said, "I definitely have a lot of unforgettable memories, we were together when we were young -- more than 40 years. We have worked together many times already at the training class, he took great care of and work was very happy. We really have worked together so much, it is really heartbreaking!" Did he know if Hui Siu Hung had anything he wanted to do but hasn't? Sam Gor said, "He doesn't. He was so dashing, he has seen and understood everything. He himself has been sick for so long but didn't tell us. Actually he has already been sick for so long but no one knew, so we didn't see him until the day he passed. It's so regretful, so heartbreaking!" Although this friend was not frequently seen, Sam Gor pointed out that everyone was very close every time they met and nothing needed to be said. Sam Gor said, "His daughter has just gotten married, so he has another son (sons-in-law) who is also well-behaved. He was so happy. It's too sudden, he should have continued to be happy and enjoy family fun." Finally Sam Gor recalled that only Benz Hung drove Benz to show his status, they did not dare to get a ride from him. Sam Gor kept holding back his tears, and after completing the interview he turned around and left as he wiped away his tears.
Cheung Ka Fai said that he and Hui Siu Hung have already worked together on TVB dramas. When Hui Siu Hung was seriously ill, he only found out from watching the news and receiving text messages. He still was unable to make it to see him for the last time. Ka Fai pointed out that when Hui Siu Hung passed away, he thought, "Oh no, such a good actor! He was able to lift up the scene, help the lead and know how to act. He was flexible and happy, and there is no pressure being with him. This type of actor like Benz Hung is already few and far between." Was Hui Siu Hung always cheerful? Ka Fai said, "In front of and behind the camera, he was very quick-witted. Our past collaborations have been very comfortable."
The mourning hall was open to the public from 4 to 5 p.m. yesterday to say goodbye to Hui Siu Hung, and citizens lined up with white flowers to pay their final salute.
Movie fan Mr. Yeung has loved watching Hui Siu Hung's works since he was a child. From "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" to the later role of "Brother Foon Hei", his roles left a deep impression on him. He praised his idol for his kindness and said that he would learn from how he treated others. He felt very reluctant and sad about Hui Siu Hung's sudden death, so he came to pay his respects yesterday and wished Hui Siu Hung a safe journey.
Fan Ms. Au specifically came to see off "Brother Benz" on his last journey. She said that she has watched many works starring Hui Siu Hung such as LIFE MADE SIMPLE (AH WONG SUN JUEN) and his portrayal of "Brother Foon Hei", so she was shocked and regretful about the sudden death of "Brother Benz". She admitted that the deepest impression of "Brother Benz" was his friendly smile.
