Hsiao-lee smiles only twice in the entire film -- when she goes to karaoke with Li-li, and when Li-li returns after a prolonged absence. A girl who doesn't show emotions, Hsiao-lee lives with her abusive alcoholic father, harsh hairstylist mother, and a younger sister who monopolizes their mother’s love. They are all crammed in a small apartment atop a building, reachable only by steep stairs. When her father smashes household items and strikes her mother, Hsaio-lee can only retreat to a corner of the closet -- her only private space—and have nightmares. One day, she meets Li-li, a transfer student from an American school, and begins dreaming of escape. Set in 1988, Girl transports audience to those times through evocative colors and tightly constructed mise-en-scene. Hsiao-lee's mother, credited only as 'Woman,' is unable to escape from the past wounds that define her present. Her wounds are directly passed down to Hsiao-lee, creating new ones. Girl builds an intricate narrative by layering the characters' concentrated emotions and their clashes. This narrative grows even more powerful through the actors’ detailed performances and a camera that tenaciously delves into cramped spaces. While happily passing his days with his wife Miri, their two children and two dogs, Man-su is suddenly informed by his company that he has been fired.

Feeling shocked as if his head had been cut off by an ax, Man-su vows to find himself a new job within the next three months for the sake of his family. Despite his firm resolve to turn his life around, Man-su spends over a year drifting from one job interview after another, and working at a retail store. He eventually finds himself in danger of losing the very house that he struggled so hard to buy.
Desperate, he visits Moon Paper out of the blue and tries to hand over his CV, but he just ends up getting humiliated by line manager Choi Sun-chul. Man-su knows he is better qualified than anyone to work at Moon Paper, so he comes to a certain decision. 'If there is no opening for me, I'll just have to get hired by creating an opening.'

In 1960s Nagasaki, after the death of his yakuza father, gifted teenager Kikuo is taken under the wing of famed Kabuki actor Hanjiro Hanai, even though the great performer already has a son, Shunsuke, who has dedicated his life to the art.
