The Dayo Wong Tze Wa, Gardner Tse Kwan Ho, Louise Wong Dan Nei and others starred Lunar New Year film A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) has been a runaway hit at the box office, broken records galore, and became the fast (5 days) film in Hong Kong history to pass HK$ 30 million at the box office; two days ago on the Lunar 3rd (24th) its single day box office was HK$ 7.04 million, the best single day box office of the past 5 years. Wong Tze Wa had to rehearse for his play with Jan Lamb Hoi Fung starting February 24th. Despite being unable to participate in audience appreciation events, he still did not forget to pay attention to the box office trend. Yesterday he learned that the record was broken again, he posted, "Completely because of you, madness has been recreated."

A GUILTY CONSCIENCE team has not relaxed due to its box office success. Director Ng Wai Lun on Saturday (28th) and Sunday (29th) would lead Adam Pak Tin Nam and Renci Yeung Si Wing to an audience appreciation event. Some online said that they have already seen the film 3 times.

Hins Cheung King Hin's first Lunar New Year film lead EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ONG HA) made over HK$ 10 million; becoming the ten million box office actor, he today would lead Jeffrey Ngai Chun Sun, Ah Jeng (Wong Ching Yi), Kaho Hung and others for a surprise audience appreciation event to thank the viewers for their support.

Grace Wong Kwan Hing since leaving TVB two years ago went alone North to participate in a variety show. Last year she even worked on the Donnie Yen Chi Tan directed and starred film SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji KIU FUNG JUEN), playing the important character of Madame Ma. She admitted that she was very honored to have the opportunity, very grateful to Chi Tan for his support and encouragement. Before the shoot in order to get more into playing a "period costume person", she listened to Chinese music and watched classic costume films like mad. "I have watched many classic characters of Lam Ching Ha (Brigitte Lin), (Maggie) Cheung Man Yuk, (Vicki) Zhao Wei and others to make myself enter the period costume world."

Working with Yukee Chen and Cya Liu for the first time, Grace praised Yukee Chan for her focus during the shoot. She also admired Cya Liu very much. "When I watched LIMBO (JI CHI) I already really wanted to work with her. She is someone who gets into character then couldn't get out of it. I really love this kind of actors, an acting fanatic. So when we were waiting for our marks, we loved to talk about acting. (Which scene was the most memorable?) In one scene, Cya had to grab my lower jaw hard. I told her not to hold back for me. She really grabbed him hard, I suffocated and the micro blood vessels were showing. Because we had to shoot a dozen takes or so, afterward my face was bruised but the result was great. Even Chi Tan said don't stop rolling, just let us perform."

Aside from the fight scene, Chi Tan even arranged for a seduction scene for Grace to improvise. She admitted that it was very memorable. "The scene was shot inside a horse carriage with elder Du Yuming. Chi Tan said that he would let me improvise, to use all the erotic and sure-fire tricks. I said I would do my best. Because Du Yuming started as an action star, he said that he has never been so lucky to have this type of scenes. He has not even had a kiss scene, so I could be considered his first on screen kiss. Also because of that, I wasn't scared of him in this scene. I also really remember that line, 'I want you to die comfortably'."

[2023.01.25] LOUIS KOO'S COMPANY IS ACCUSED OF OWING SCREENWRITER SALARY

Louis Koo leaves the matter for the lawyers to respond to

The "Equal Writer Union Hong Kong" two days ago issued a statement on facebook with the subject of unfairness over the film project A LIFE OF PAPERS (JI PEI POR POR). It demanded a direct conversation with the film production company One Cool Film's boss Louis Koo Tin Lok. Goo Jai yesterday has already left the matter to the lawyers to respond to. The legal firm cited that One Cool Film from May to October 2022 has been seeking resolution with the A LIFE OF PAPERS screenwriter and director Ren Xia (Yam Hap). Although it felt that he twisted words and forced logic, it has always remained tolerant. On October 31st 2022, the company still hoped that both parties would be able to resolve the issue peacefully and provided a resolution agreement draft. No response has been received yet, hence the open letter accusation two days ago was regrettable and has left the company stunned.

On the issue of the screenwriter contract, One Cool Film assigned the task to screenwriter Shu Kei, and Shu Kei recommended Yam Hap. One Cool Film at the end of 2008 signed a film editor and film producer contract with Mr. Shu Kei and a director contract with Yam Hap. In accordance to those 3 contracts the company has paid the salaries in related payments. Yam Hap participated in the project's first draft screenplay creation, and Shu Kei paid him HK$ 67,500 in salary. This was the collaboration agreement between them. Thus Yam Hap's accusation of "being eliminated from the screenwriting contract and the screenwriting salary was being owed for over 3 years" had nothing to do with One Cool Film.

One Cool Film would again clarify the accusation of "monopolizing the million dollar first prize money and the prize whereabouts is unknown", stating that as the production company it applied for the Golden Horse Film Project Promotion. The information provided included the second draft of the A LIFE OF PAPERS screenplay, the director, the producer, and the production company. In the end the project received NT$ 1 million (around HK$ 250,000) in prize money, after taxes the actual amount of NT$ 800,000 (around HK$ 200,000). The event presented the prize money to the company. Due to Yam Hap's demand for his share of the prize money had no precedence, One Cool Film contacted the event. The event stated that the paid prize money would not be rescinded. One Cool Film decided without discounting for any pre-production expense to split the prize money evenly between One Cool Film, the producer, director Yam Hap and screenwriter Shu Kei. Yet Yam Hap demanded half the prize money and excluded Shu Kei. He even brought up buying back the screenplay for HK$ 1,000, which baffled One Cool Film. In October 2022, One Cool Film stated that it would considered transferring the A LIFE OF PAPERS project at cost (including only the creative expenses that have been already paid). Yam Hap has not responded and chosen to issue the open letter three months later.

Turning 60 this year, Donnie Yen jokes that since he can still fight a little he would continue to make fight scenes to thank viewers who like him

The Donnie Yen directed and starred SAKRA faces the Dayo Wong starred A GUILTY CONSCIENCE and Hins Cheung's EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL.  He stresses that he does not mind a box office defeat, the most important is for the film industry to be at a full bloom.

The Donnie Yen Chi Tan produced, directed and starred wuxia epic SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji KIU FUNG JUEN) opened in Malaysia on January 16th on top of the box office. Chi Tan two weeks ago promoted the film with a whirlwind tour of Malaysia. After 8 days in release, it successfully defeated other film releases of the same period and firmly sat atop of Malaysia Lunar New Year box office. Its box office headed straight for 3.2 million RM (over HK$ 5.84 million). In addition, SAKRA also was the Singapore Hong Kong Lunar New Year film box office champion and the most searched for film on the Mainland video channels like iQiYi, Tencent Video and Youku. Yen Chi Tan said that in July this year he would turn 60, so he would openly face any box office victory or defeat. After over 40 years of making action films, he has tried to transition to drama and no longer be the "Strongest in the Universe". Unfortunately the audience did not accept it, a fact that Yen Chi Tan gladly accepted. He would continue to be an action actor until the audience no longer liked to watch him, then he would retire.

Yen Chi Tan admitted that now he would face gains and losses as openly as Kiu Fung in the movie. He would not mind box office loses or wins. With A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG)'s Dayo Wong Tze Wa carrying his previous film TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM)'s HK$ 77 million box office momentum, would he be worried that he would pale in comparison, losing out at the box office and being criticized? Yen Chi Tan felt that he would not get to be afraid, and he did not mind losing or winning. "Everyone's genres are different. Tze Wa of course has his substance, with the accumulated TABLE FOR SIX box office success everyone would want to see A GUILTY CONSCIENCE. Those who don't like watching Yen Chi Tan action films would never watch them. Those who like them would come to see what would Yen Chi Tan be doing this time? I hope everyone would watch all the movie in the Lunar New Year, as the Hong Kong film full bloom of the past would return."

Really minding defeats in the past, Yen Chi Tan admitted that at the time he was not yet mature. "My movies have won before, so what's the big deal about losing a little. SAKRA is a product of three major online platforms. My intention is hoping for the entire world to be able to enjoy Yen Chi Tan's new action film. (It doesn't matter even if it would lose?) It doesn't matter, it would either lose or win."

Yen Chi Tan admired this character of Kiu Fung for his ability to withstand any condemnation and tolerate pressure. He could not be bothered with what others say. "Actually history has always been like this, people might not be able to see it so transparently. They may hear some information and believe it is real, just going along with it like sheep." In real life, Yen Chi Tan admitted that when he was younger he minded facing criticism and pressure very much. In particular when something was made out of nothing, ultimately people have emotions and desires. They would get mad and they would laugh, but as he grew older and turning 60 this year he now would face things with a much more opened mind. "I can say I am completely open minded, but it has unknowingly gradually accumulated. I am pretty glad that I turn 60 this year, but very luckily I still have movies to make. The audience hasn't abandoned me yet." He felt that gratitude was very important, when he learned to be grateful and cherish things he have, live in the moment, he has already let go.

As for various previous setbacks like the last film he produced and starred in, COME BACK HOME (SAU GAU) bombed at the box office, and SAKRA being forced from the big screen to the internet, Yen Chi Tan was not angry at all. "I laugh them off, how can I explain them? This film from the beginning has been a internet investment. I don't feel an online release is shameful, the goal of making a movie is hoping for even more people to be able to watch my work. The internet has a great ability of broadcasting. I try to look at it from a positive angle, then I would be a little happier."

Yen Chi Tan has made action films for over 40 years, accumulating exhaustion and injuries. When asked about retirement from action films, he admitted that he has thought about it but regretted that the market would not permit him to do so. "I am not taking a negative approach to talk about COME BACK HOME, but the audience doesn't like my dramatic performance. They like to watch action films that I fight very strongly in. I can completely accept that, I don't have any reason to deliberately keep that from the audience." How old would he think he would be able to keep going to? He said, "Earlier I have told my wife many times, that at age 55 I would retire. Several years ago when I made BIG BROTHER (DAI SI HING) I already had that in mind. I would perform a little less and bring up some newcomers, but the fact proved that the market still wanted to watch Yen Chi Tan fight. Thus I don't necessarily have to stop fighting. Now I can still fight a little. When I feel the audience no longer like to watch me, then I wouldn't keep the world from spinning."

Yen Chi Tan has never thought about playing the Louis Cha (Jin Yong) wuxia novel DEMI-GODS AND SEMI-DEVILS (TIN LUNG BAK BO)'s Kiu Fung. Completely by chance, without any mental preparation and desire Wong Jing suddenly mentioned to him to play the character. Yen Chi Tan said, "Several years ago Wong Jing asked me to be in CHASING THE DRAGON (JUI LUNG) and play Crippled Ho. At the time I was working on a foreign film in Toronto. Because I couldn't think of a new angle to interpret but I had the desire inside, I considered it for 3 full months before agreeing to perform."

Was it because the Ray Lui Leung Wai played Crippled Ho was too classic? He said, "Yes, also because it was too classic I wanted to play this character even more. Thankfully the response was decent." He felt that as an actor or a director he still had to dare to try and explore. While success was not guaranteed, shrinking and curling into a ball would keep him from moving forward. Thus after he decided to make SAKRA, he kept thinking about how to make the movie and how to play the role.

Yen Chi Tan was not worried that releasing a costume wuxia film now would be criticized being outdated. He felt that the most important was to be fresh. He said that SAKRA completely was not the past classic wuxia films. "Past wuxia films, everyone have seen them. Even with the Tsui Hark directed ones I have been in several. This time with the all new production, I put myself into the audience's state of mind and think why young people now like to watch Marvel movies. It is because it is direct, so in my action scene designs it was enough for me to feel whether the fight was powerful enough, entertaining to watch, making hairs stand on their ends, and have new visual enjoyment. I never thought about making a world rocking epic. It's too complicated. The message would be so dep that no one would understand the movie."

The Hong Kong Lunar New Year film box office would continue last year's film market success, as many Lunar New Year films reported good news. The Dayo Wong Tze Wa, Louise Wong Dan Nei, Gardner Tse Kwan Ho, Fish Liew Chi Yu and others starred Lunar New Year film A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) opened on the Lunar New Year's Eve. After 3 days in release its cumulative box office has already passed HK$ 15 million. As of January 22nd, the Hins Cheung King Hin and Ivana Wong Yuen Chi starred EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUNG GAING HAI GIP ONG HA) after 2 days made HK$ 4,652,438. The Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji KIU FUNG JUEN) after 4 days made HK$ 1,375,987. AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER after 40 days in release made over HK$ 133 million.

In his first Lunar New Year film lead EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ONG HA), Hins Cheung King Hin has been so nervous over his new film that he lost sleep for days. Yet he still put his effort into promoting, attending over 50 shows of audience appreciation events in 3 days. He said, "During the performance process, perhaps from everyone's chemistry and different understanding a lot of comedy filled the film. Yet I would like everyone to be able to see our 'security guard's slogan, Secure with our hearts, guard with our lives.'"

"In the process of growing up, no one told us about the price is that something would slowly be lost and we have to accept some truth helplessly. However I believe that the world we live in still has a lot of values, perhaps something that we feel we should persist in life. I hope to be able to remind everyone, when running into trouble whether in life, at work or in love we have to secure with our hearts". EVERYTHING on the Lunar New Year's Eve made HK$ 2.57 million on the single day box office.

In addition, Hin Jai forced the "EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL Lunar New Year Visit tour" for a program with Ivana Wong Yuen Chi, Michael Ning (Bak Ji), Angus Yeung Tin Yue, Suey Kwok Sze, Lai Chun, Cheung Ming Wai and Yau Chung Wai to pay New Year visits and play mahjong. During the matches comedy ensured, according to the game rules they spoke English and Cantonese, sometimes even Japanese and singing. In the end Hin Jai won with HK$ 256.

Yen Chi Tan posted twice on the Lunar New Year's day, including his heroic look from the film and a photo from an audience appreciation event when he was eating between fans at the cinema. "Due to work I again am unable to have the Lunar New Year dinner with my wife. Ultimately I feel very dull. Last night I even went to the movies to thank the audience! Children after growing up would have their own journeys, still accompany me would still be the other half." On the Lunar New Year, Yen Chi Tan again issued two posts. In them he played TWO FORGOTTEN IN THE SMOKY WATER and wrote Lunar New Year banner and couplets.

Dayo Wong Tze Wa, with the momentum from TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM)'s HK$ 77 million box office, opened A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) on Lunar New Year's Eve. The audience flocked to climb a glimpse of "Tze Wa God"'s glory in the war of words. After 3 days its box office has already passed HK$ 15 million. Wong Tze Wa immediately responded on social media, "When I woke up in the New Year the number is already at HK$ 15 million, if I don't repay the return wouldn't I be a real jerk?" He then posted his 2018 Lunar New Year song LAI SEE BELONGS TO YOU to celebrate and wish everyone a Happy New Year.

On Lunar New Year's Even Wong Tze Wa even personally went to support the movie and posted his ticket stub on social media. "I haven't wrote a late show in 20 years, I wish everyone a Happy New Year!" Two days ago on the Lunar New Year's Day he posted a handsome Lunar New Year photo. He even joked, "I know this Lunar New Year look is a little awkward, but I sincerely wish everyone a peaceful yet exciting New Year (PS: for peaceful yet exciting, you can just watch A GUILTY CONSCIENCE! I really am a genius)." He also added the laughing emoji.
