The "32nd Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards Presentation Ceremony" was held at the Hong Kong Film Archive yesterday. Five time winner of the Society's Best Actor award five times, Sean Lau Ching Wan served as the guest of honor and presented the award to "Best Actor and Actress" Louis Koo Tin Lok (Goo Jai) and Fish Liew Chi Yu. Liew Chi Yu won her first Best Actress and stated that she hoped to win another; Goo Jai hoped that the film industry will innovate and progress, and jokingly said that he asked Ching Wan to make JUET SAI HO YEH (PEERLESS GOOD THINGS). The 5th Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards Best Actor Lau Ching Wan with Jacky Cheung Hok Yau's song THE FARAWAY HER to encourage the young generations not to give up on dreams and to rely on themselves to create results.
"Best Film" was won by CIAO UFO (JOI GEIN UFO); Koo Tin Lok won the "Best Actor" for BEHIND THE SHADOWS (SI GA JING TAM); Liew Chi Yu won the "Best Actress" award for the first time with SOMEONE LIKE ME (JEUNG NGOR JEH YEUNG DIK OI CHING); Jonathan Li Tsz Chun and Chow Man Yu won the "Best Director" for BEHIND THE SHADOWS; UNIDENTIFIED MURDER (UFO KEI LEI MING ONG)' Kwok Ka Hei, Lee Chun Kit, Ho Siu Hong and Choi Ka Hang jointly won the "Best Screenplay". The 6 recommended movies included: UNIDENTIFIED MURDER, BEHIND THE SHADOWS, GIRL, PAWS LAND (MO GA), ANOTHER WORLD (SAI OI) and THE SHADOW'S EDGE (BO FUNG JUI YING), among which the director of GIRL Shu Qi was absent for some reason and the representative of the film company accepted the award on her behalf.
Before the award, Ching Wan joked that winning the lottery was not easy. However she saw many actresses going to night clubs and making a killing with NIGHT KING "Brother Foon" and "Sister V". "Jobs have no class differentiation. For a living, everyone has to do something to hold on. I feel you don't need to let go of your ideals and dreams, as they say 'If passion hasn't changed, who cares about the changes' (the lyrics of Cheung Hok Yau's FARAWAY HER). He was asked about his message to the new actors, and he stated, "The most important thing for an actor is to form his own performance through experience; don't rely on listening to those cliches Lau Ching Wan say, which sound useless. I think it is only useful to rely on yourself to see, listen, and think." He also funnily claimed to be a "indiscriminately working" and welcomed new directors to work with him. However they had to think clearly about whether they really needed him. What would be the conditions for the collaboration? Ching Wan smiled and said, "If there are more actresses I will definitely go, the type like Brother Foon in NIGHT KING (YEH WONG). You should ask me to be Brother Foon earlier, I would have tripping over myself to come."
Goo Jai received the "Best Actor" award from his friend Lau Ching Wan, and said with a smile, "Recently many people have said that they have watched me act since they were children. I watched Ching Wan's POLICE CADET when I was little." Goo Jai said, "I think many things need to change, now that technology is advanced, streaming platforms, short videos and AI are born, we all need to change to progress, and we need the relay of the next generation. I hope everyone will continue to support Hong Kong films and support us to continue to keep going!"
After the event Goo Jai and Liew Chi Yu were interviewed together. Goo Jai said that he received the award from his friend Ching Wan and it was the first time he won the award, so he was very happy. When the award was announced that day, he was a little dumbfounded and did not dare to believe it. Speaking of working with Ching Wan on LA BRASSIERE (JUET SAI HO BRA) and the producer of the film was also present, would they have the opportunity to work together again? Goo Jai believed that there would always be a chance because film is a dream world, but it would depend on the script. He also joked that filming can start JUET SAI HO YEH (PEERLESS GOOD THING). Would his next goal be to win the Hong Kong Film Awards "Best Actor"? Goo Jai said, "The next goal is to make a good movie, the nomination is already recognition. Everyone would do their best. From the impression that the Hong Kong Film Awards have given me in the past, if someone has two nominations for one award the vote source would be diluted. However I hope (Raymond) Lam Fung would be nominated for BACK TO THE PAST (CHUM CHUN GEI)."
Liew Chi Yu received a thumbs up from Ching Wan. From Malaysia, she revealed that she grew up watching Hong Kong films and was a "TV child". "I grew up watching Hong Kong films since childhood. I was a TV child. My Ma has to raise 3 daughters alone because Papa works overseas, I was left in the take of television. Papa has a friend who sells pirated VCDs, so he constantly brought back a big pile of video discs, including Hong Kong films and category III films; but he didn't know. I watch anything and everything, I really liked the film world, which I feel is very romantic. I have always longed for my life to have many romantic things happening. Today I stand on this award tage, with Lau Ching Wan presenting the award to me. It's super romantic." She said that she loved actin so much, in the future she would use her observation and curiosity for the world to put what she has learned and known into her roles. She hoped that the curse of "no movie for 3 years after winning an award" that NIGHT KING director Jack Ng Wai Lu referred to did not exist. "I am planning to welcome even more characters, I hope to have even more opportunities to perform."
After winning her first Best Actress, Liew Chi Yu admitted that she hoped to win a second award and have a movie to make next would be the best Would she be really worried about not having a film to make for 3 years after winning the award? She admitted that she was worried, "Currently the market is sluggish." Her boss Goo Jai immediately joked, "I will start a production for you before we get into the vehicle later. It's strange that every time you win an award, I am in the audience. I am so scared that you would cry from being so excited." Chi Yu smiled and said, "I almost cried just now, but I feel a big girl should hold back and stop crying."
She also jokingly revealed that she was very happy to watch the Goo Jai and Ching Wan starred LA BRASSIERE. "Before I wore a bra I already watched this movie, and also learned to wear a bra from watching this movie." Goo Jai joked, "I hope it didn't affect your development. You could've watched anything, but you watched two men wear bras." Goo Jai revealed that he has been in contact with the filming of the movie "1941", but has not yet read the script.
Chow Man Yu won Best Director for BEHIND THE SHADOWS, and thanked the film's boss Koo Tin Lok for contributing money and heart. Although Koo Tin Lok was an experienced actor, he would never teach the director what to do. He would rather do the job well as a companion. "The argument scene between Koo Tin Lok and (Chrissie) Chau Sau Na was shot wrong. I suggested another take, he said OK and did it with us. He never minded the mistakes of a new director and was willing to finish the job together."
