The entertainment industry under the pandemic became one of the major disaster areas. The Koo Tin Lok starred G STORM was released on New Year's Eve last year, after six days in release it was forced to suspend its run. At the time its box office was HK$ 6 million. The film company said that it would arrange for the film's return engagement on April 21st.

[2022.04.08] JAPANESE MANGA LEGEND FUJIO A FUJIKO PASSED AWAY AT HOME

courtesy of singtao.com

Famous Japanese manga creator Fujio A Fujiko (originally named Motoo Abiko) passed away yesterday in his Kawasaki home at age 88.

Fujio A Fujiko's work included NINJA HATTORI-KUN, CHILDHOOD DAYS, and THE MONSTER KID. He and the late DORAEMON creator Fujio F Fujiko (originally named Hiroshi Fujimoto) for a long period used the pen name "Fujio Fujiko" together on works like LITTLE GHOST Q-TARO.

Motoo Abiko and Hiroshi Fujimoto were friends of many years. Abiko was once asked after Fujimoto's death would he take over DORAEMON? The former said that it was not something he could create. Years later in memoirs and interviews they denied that they were at odds. They kept splitting the DORAEMON royalty evenly, only Hiroshi Fujimoto after learning that he had cancer in 1986 was afraid that his family after his passing would fight with Fujio A Fujiko over the DORAEMON royalty. Thus they decided to go their separate ways.

The Emperor Motion Picture HOI GUAN JIN SIN (CUSTOMS FRONT LINE) will be Herman Yau Lai To directed, Siu Kim Chau produced, Erica Li Man written, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Karena Lam Ka Yan, Cya Liu, Francis Ng Chun Yu, Kenny Kwan Chi Bun, Michelle Wai Sze Nga, Carlos Chan Ka Lok, Angus Yeung Tin Yue, Michelle Yim (Mai Suet), Shek Sau, Amanda S. and others starred. As soon as the news of its production hit the film already became the focus of the entire city. Yesterday a worship ceremony was held, the Emperor Group chief Dr. Albert Yeung Sau Sing personally host the event as he led the cast and the crew to faithfully pray for a smooth production, box office and critical success. This time Ting Fung would star as well as direct the action. Hok Yau expected the production to test his physical abilities, but he was relaxed in the hands of this new partner.

Working on a new film after 6 years, Cheung Hok Yau would work with action director and star Tse Ting Fung. Hok Yau joked that Ting Fung constantly made movies so he did not need to make any special preparation. Hok Yau said, "I haven't made a movie in too long, I don't know how to prepare." Ting Fung said, "I haven't played a good guy in very long time. In the last one (RAGING FIRE) the character was rather bad, this time in HOI GUAN JIN SIN the character would be more serious. I hope to be able to make a little adjustment." Ting Fung would be the action director for the first time, would he tailor a series of stunts for Hok Yau? Tng Fung said, "I really like to watch Hok Yau Gor Gor act, he acts too well. Most recently I started to watch his work again starting with BULLET IN THE HEAD!" Hok Yau happily responded, "When I knew Ting Fung would design the action I was very relaxed, I have never had any physical training. This time I am just going to take a risk, when I take my mark if I get hurt I get hurt, if I don't I am lucky. I m the elder so he definitely would treat me well. I am relaxed with Ting Fung. Earlier Director Yau Lai To told me, 'Last time with Wa Jai (Andy Lau Tak Wa) it was only a few shots, the fighting ended up to be very powerful!' So I really am very relaxed!"

Would Hok Yau and Ting Fung have the chance to sing the theme song together? Ting Fung sad, "In front of Hok Yau how can I say I am a singer?" Hok Yau added, "You are, actually since I have been making movies I would very rarely suggest it (singing theme songs). Mostly only when other people ask would I sing. If Ting Fung sings, I would save it for him and not sing."

After JULY RHAPSODY (NAM YUN SEI SUP) in 2001 and HEAVEN IN THE DARK (UM SIK TIN TONG) in 2016, Hok Yau and Lam Ka Yan would work together for a third time this time; Ting Fung and Ka Yan worked together last time on TIRAMISU (LUEN OI HUNG SING) 21 years ago. Hok Yau said that he watched Ting Fung and Ka Yan grow up and did not feel like strangers at all. Before the shoot, Hok Yau and Ka Yan held hands and chatted. Hok Yau joked that the director asked me to be ambiguous, so off screen they were still holding hands to foster the emotions. However later the director said it was useless so they did not continue.

Ka Yan hinted that the love with Hok Yau in the film would not have a happy ending. It would be very heart breaking. She said that each time she worked with Hok Yau on a movie they would not have a happy ending. Playing the Customs Deputy Commissioner in the film, Ka Yan on the first day of work already had a gun fight scene. Ting Fung arranged for her to jump a hurdle. "I had to jump and shoot. It looked simple. After work when I got home I realized that I had bruises all over. During the shoot I seriously listened to instructions, I didn't notice that my leg was swollen. I really need to exercise more." For the gun fight scenes, she went to practice at the gun club.

Cya Liu in the film played a Thai intelligence agent. She said, "Ting Fung said that he would arrange some stunts for me, some of which would be scenes of getting hit. I would see what arrangements would he make. We haven't gotten to the action scenes yet, he hasn't asked anything of me yet. Later he definitely would be very strict." Cya said that she looked forward to the difficult stunts that Ting Fung would arrange for. To be able to work with a group of elders, she excitedly said that it had a very wonderful feeling because she grew up on Hong Kong movies.

Although Ng Chun Yu was unable to attend the production start worship ceremony, he has begun working days ago. Chun Yu already recorded an interview. Playing a high ranking Customs agent in the film, Chun Yu has not worn an uniform for a performance in a very long time; seeing the pandemic becoming steady, Chun Yu believed that they would be able to tough out this pandemic and perform successfully. Since Ting Fung would be the action director, would he hope that Ting Fung would design stunts for him? Chun Yu joked, "No thank you, those who started in art films like us really wouldn't be able to handle it. However I really want to watch what Ting Fung's action direction would be like. Unfortunately I wouldn't have a chance to show my skills, I would have to wait for next time."

Kwan Chi Bun, Chan Ka Lok, Wai Sze Nga and Yeung Tin Yue would participate in the film. Aside from Chan Ka Lok, the other three would play Customs officers. The actors had nothing but praise for Action Director Ting Fung. Kenny said, "Earlier when we worked on action scenes, Ting Fung really would personally teach us a lot of different action, especially how to hold the gun. One day he even brought us to try real guns. We kept shooting, kept burning money." Wai Sze Nga said, "Ting Fung really is great, he not only taught us how to hold the gun and look cooler, he even advised us on what we would need to be careful with. I had an explosion scene. He really worried about us getting hurt, so he reminded me to cover my face." Kenny also revealed that because of all the numerous stunts, he tore four pairs of pants in a day!

Wai Sze Nga and Chan Ka Lok this time did not need to play a couple again. Sze Nga instead would have romantic scenes with Ting Fung. Wai Sze Nga said, "I really am very happy, I feel the company treat me great. I should probably return to the film salary to the company! Now even when I am waiting for my mark, I would stay on the set to wipe away Ting Fung's sweat." Chan Ka Lok broken heartedly said, "Why when you work with me on a movie, you don't treat me like this? The contrast is really too much!"

Shek Sau in the film played Customs Commissioner, leading his Customs colleagues in an armed trafficking case investigation. Mai Suet and Melvin Wong Kam Sun in the film played a couple. Wong Kam Sun joked that for years he has longed to play a couple with Mai Suet, now his dream has finally come true. Playing a businessman in the film, Wong Kam Sun assisted Shek Sau in solving the case. Mai Suet said that she would participate in the film's exciting car chase. She was really looking forward to it.

[2022.04.07] RICHIE JEN JOKES ABOUT BEING THE "BEATING TAKING STAR" IN NEW FILM

courtesy of singtao.com

Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) in the new film MAN ON THE EDGE (BIN YUEN HUNG JEH) had many action scenes. He shared the production highlight on social media, and jokingly claimed that he was a beating taking star, not a martial art action star. He had a massage as he said, "It's too late to make action films, over 30 years too late......I am sore all over, all the old wounds are out. I am old and the parts are broken."

Siu Chai thanked the team for arranging to have professional teams on the set. Aside from helping actors ease any discomfort, the ambulance also had a lot of professional equipment just in case. The film had an explosion scene, so fire fighting tools were must have. Siu Chai said, "Thanks to the director for still feeling that I can be an action star. When we work on movies normally, we would easily get hurt, so the emergency rescue team is here everyday with me. They help us with stretching, acupuncture, massage and other treatments. Their rescue vehicle is very professional, let me show everyone around! Thank you to the film safety solution team friends for their treatment of me!"

The martial art action superstar of a generation, "One Armed Swordsman" Jimmy Wang Yu passed away on the morning of the 5th at the age of 80 from respiratory failure. Wang Yu suffered two strokes and struggled against illness for 6 years. His daughters Linda Wong Hing Ping and Carol Wong Ka Lo confirmed the news of their father's passing on social media.

Wong Hing Ping wrote, "It is with much sadness that we inform everyone: our beloved father Mr. Wang Yu, after a six year long struggle with illness, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 5th at the Taipei Cheng Hsin hospital at age 80. Father was all about loyalty and valued friends. On and off screen he was a rock solid hero with a exciting life. We would forever miss Father, and believe that his One Armed Swordsman handsome hero image would always endure in film history and the hearts of movie fans."

Because Wong Hing Ping lives in Hong Kong and her youngest sister Maria Wong Mei Yi lives in Canada, Wang Yu lived with his second daughter Wong Ka Lo. Wong Hing Ping and Wong Mei Yi stayed in touch with Father via video chats. Wong Hing Ping revealed that she learned that Father's condition deteriorated last week and they were already mentally prepared. They also started to prepared for their flights, but due to the pandemic no ticket was available until this week. She and youngest sister Mei Yi would head to Taiwan as soon as possible to handle their father's affair. As for Wang Yu's funeral the sisters would make decisions after talking with each other.

Wang Yu in 2013 with the film SOUL won the Taipei Film Festival Best Actor. In 2014 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Asian Film Festival for his decades of contributions to and achievements in film. In 2019 he received the 56th Golden Horse Award Lifetime Achievement Award. Due to his illness, his daughters Wong Hing Ping and Wong Ka Lo accepted the honor on his behalf. Director Ang Lee presented the Lifetime Achievement Award that year. Ang Lee yesterday expressed through his assistance Lee Liang-Shan. "Today we heard the bad new that he left us. To many film fans like me, he represented the climate of a certain era. I would miss his films and his heroic spirit." Ang Lee once said that Wang Yu not only solidified the wuxia superstar standard but also was a trailblazer in hardcore action films. In particular Wang Yu directed and starred in THE CHINESE BOXER (LUNG FU DAU), founded this genre of film even before Bruce Lee and inspired countless who came after.

Jackie Chan also remembered the elder. "Today on Ching Ming Festival, I received shocking news that Wang Yu passed away. Another wuxia hero left us. Your contribution to kung fu films, your support and wisdom for the younger generation would always be remembered by the industry. Your films would always remain in your fans' hearts. We would miss you, rest in peace!"

Ting Yu has known Wang Yu for decades and they were like brothers. He said, "Wang Yu and I have known each other since the Shaw's days. At the time he was very mischievous. I was 7 years older so I called him little brother. Sigh! Of course I am saddened and I would miss him. I watched him fight at Shaw, became a martial art superstar and got hurt all over. In recent years he was sick and convalescing in Taiwan. I haven't seen him in years. I wish that he would reach another world, without pain, have a safe journey."

Ting Yu said that Wang Yu valued loyalty. Before he would come to Hong Kong every year, as soon as he landed he would call him right away to meet up for drinks. Ting Yu said, "He liked to drink, whenever he did he was guaranteed to get drunk. I always told him not to drink too much, but he couldn't, with his big brother personality and how often he entertained. When Ko Chun Hsiung came to Hong Kong to direct the first film, Wang Yu introduced me to provide the Cantonese dubbing." What was the most memorable from their decades of friendship? He said, "Whenever I had any minor problem, he would take care of it for me. When he was upset inside, I would soothe and comfort him."

Film star Tang Wei said, "I was very fortunate to have worked with Mr. Wang Yu on the film WU XIA. Mr. Wang Yu was light hearted, humorous, had a great personality and extremely respected his profession. I still remember how much he enjoyed being on the set like it was yesterday. Don't be fooled by his villain costume, his gloomy expression that looked vicious in his role. While waiting to take his mark he was just as happy as a child. I remember at the time he would always perform magic tricks and play little games with us." Tang Wei lamented, "This was the Mr. Wang Yu in my memory, very special and very hard to forget. I will always miss him."

Nancy Sit Ka Yin said that she was saddened to hear the news. Back then Big Brother Wang Yu made Mandarin films while she made Cantonese films, thus they have never worked together. She knew that Big Brother Wang Yu in recent years was not in great health, as he was already 80. "Actually I haven't seen him in a very long time. Earlier when I worked on CANTOPOP AT 50 I invited his daughter Wong Hing Ping to the program, I would ask her to send my regards. I knew that in recent years his health was poor, so of course after hearing this news I was very sad. He was a film industry martial art hero superstar, a honorable big brother. He would often help people. I send my condolences to his family, may Big Brother Wang Yu have a safe journey!"

Wang Yu, originally named Wang Ching Kuen, was born in Shanghai in 1943. He started in the industry in 1963. Earlier in his career he mainly worked as a martial art actor in Hong Kong, the representative of the first generation of stars that Director Chang Cheh made in the process of founding a wuxia new wave. In 1967 Chang Cheh cast him in the film ONE ARMED SWORDMAN and made him a star. Since then he made 60 wuxia films and was the top wuxia idol in the 60s and the 70s. In his film he only wielded the blade with his left hand, which was classic still in the hearts of movie fans today. In his over 40 years in film, he made countless classic films like THE ASSASSIN, SOUL, GOLDEN SWALLOW, THE KILLER METEORS, WU XIA, THE GUILLOTINES, he also directed several movies like the 1969 kung fu film THE CHINESE BOXER. After easing out of the film industry in 1997, 14 years later he returned to work on Peter Chan Ho Sun's WU XIA. Unfortunately in June of the same year due to exhaustion from promoting and drinking, he suffered a stroke and left the left side of body paralyzed. In 2015 while preparing to return to Taiwan at a Thailand airport he suffered another stroke and fainted. The local hospital performed two emergency brain operations. After returning to Taiwan he stayed at the Cheng Hsin Hospital and was rumored to be in critical condition numerous times. Since then, Wang Yu rarely appeared in public.

Wang Yu had a rich personal life with 2 marriages. His first marriage was to film star Jeanette Lin Tsui, who fell for famous director Chun Kim on the set. Lin Tsui could not tolerate Chun Kim's gambling addiction, separated from him in 1967 and arranged for a divorce. Wang Yu began a successful courtship. In August 1968 Lin Tsui gave birth to Wong Hing Ping. Chun Kim committed suicide in June 1969, leading to condemnation of Wang Yu's interference into his marriage. However they still wed at the end of the same year, then had two more daughters. The marriage only lasted 7 years though as they ended up in divorce in 1975. After that Wang Yu was rumored to have had an underground relationship with Brigitte Lin (Lam Ching Ha), but because he worried about his negative image's influence on her he ended the half year long romance.

In 1978 he began his second marriage with flight attendant Wang Kai Jing, until 1999 when Wang Yu took the police to an apartment to catch her in an affair. Wang Yu charged his wife with adultery and ended up in a divorce. In 2013 Wang Yu revealed that he began a romance with Mainland fan 40 years his junior, later due to the objection from her family the relationship ended after 4 short months.

With a strong personality, Wang Yu was rather strict with his daughters. When Wong Hing Ping was dating Kevin Cheng Ka Wing, Wang Yu was accused of breaking them up as he was rumored to be upset that his daughter was dating a less than popular singer. However Wong Hing Ping has already spoken up for her father, citing that she and Ka Wing had an amicable break up and nothing to do with her father.

Late singer Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing suddenly passed way on April 1st 2003, leaving countless fans who missed him. Yesterday was the 19th anniversary of Gor Gor's passing. Although due to the pandemic all events were under restriction, but fans around the world still remembered their idol in different ways. Next year would be the 20th anniversary of Gor Gor's passing. Gor Gor's friend and manager Chan Suk Fun has been planning a memorial event. She hoped that the pandemic would pass soon, so "Gor" fans around the world would be able to get together in Hong Kong and continued to love "Gor Gor" Cheung Kwok Wing.

Due to the pandemic remaining severe in Hong Kong, the government strengthened the local social distancing mandate and the entry restriction remained strict. Thus most "Gor" fans could only send their blessings from afar to Gor Gor. Although they were unable to remember Gor Gor at Po Fook Hill, they still sent flower baskets and cards and turned Po Fook Hill into a sea of flowers. The loyal Japanese "Gor" fans due to the pandemic in both places still were unable to personally come to Hong Kong. However they still stayed connected and made origami cranes for Gor Gor, sent them to Hong Kong and asked Mrs. Chan to present them to Gor Gor on their behalf.

Mrs. Chan also ordered a special balloon flower box to send blessings to her late friend far away and wished him well. Mrs. Chan's son Ka Ho yesterday morning arrived at Po Fook Hill with Gor Gor's favorite food and fresh flowers for Gor Gor.

In past years outside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, where Gor Gor left everyone, would be a sea of flowers. This year due to the pandemic the traffic drastically reduced, but fans still brought flowers to the hotel for selfies. By dusk, several dozen fans gathered at the St. George Building across the street from the hotel. Non uniformed police officers were on hand to observe. Aside from urging fans to leave they also set up giant speakers to broadcast the social distancing mandate content. Even when some fans tried to place flowers outside the hotel, the police interfered. After taking a photo the flowers had to be removed immediately.

Remember Gor Gor for the first time at the hotel, fan Mr. Lam said that he was only a child when Gor Gor passing. He only found out about this superstar in his teens. In recent years he started to like him. He loved to watch Gor Gor's films and listen to his songs, also from the film ANITA he had more understanding of Gor Gor. He also said that earlier flowers filled outside the hotel. Perhaps due to hotel arrangement or police request the flowers were removed. Some female fans since Gor Gor's passing would come to the hotel to remember her idol every year. they also hoped that for the 20th anniversary of Gor Gor's passing next year, a giant memorial event would take place.
