The film SUP FONG FAT SI yesterday held its production start ceremony. Director and screenwriter Danny Pang Fat, producer Conroy Chan Chi Chung, boss Josie Ho Chiu Yi, actors Carlos Chan Ka Lok, Kathy Yuen (Tong Yee), German Cheung Man Kit, Sabrina Ng Bing and new foreign actor Iman attended. Director Pang Fat returned to direct a Hong Kong thriller 17 years after the film IN LOVE WITH THE DEAD. He revealed that he has already had the script in his mind for over a decade. It would be about how a priest who was picking up garbage helped people who die in vain to pass on in the afterlife.
Speaking of Pang Fat filing for bankruptcy due to his inability to pay off his loans for his beloved wife's terminal lung cancer medical bills, he was offer a 7 figure emergency payment from a film company. Finally Peng Fa took the initiative to withdraw the bankruptcy application to the court. Pang Fat said yesterday that now the weight has been lifted off him. "The hardest period has already passed, I would leave whatever happens next to Heaven, living everyday well is already great." Ho Chiu Yi has a personal doctor in Iman, would he ask for opinion on his wife's condition? Pang Fat said, "My English isn't great, but I would also try to communicate with him. (How is your wife's current health?" She is fighting, giving her greatest effort." How would he divide his time between taking care of his wife when he would be filming? He pointed out that his sister is currently taking care of his wife, and he would go home to see his wife after filming everyday; but he will go to Taiwan to shoot a thriller about what happened in the hotel later. All he jobs seem to come one after another? He felt satisfied with just having a job.
Investor and star Ho Chiu Yi said that she has always liked the Pang brothers' movies, when Pang Fat happened to have "new ideas" he made this collaboration happen; Chan Chi Chung has already formed a relationship with Pang Fat in their early years and wanted to work together for a long time. He said, "Early on when I did some English translation work for Pang Fat, I already knew that he wanted to work Ho Chiu." Ho Chiu Yi at the ceremony also introduce the her newly signed foreign actor Iman as her rookie of focus. She pointed out that while her husband Chan Chi Chung was ailing, a friend introduced her to the doctor Iman. She felt that not only was he a good doctor but also very attentive. Since he was tall and handsome, as well as an internet star with several million followers, she decided to sign him as an artist, get him to stay in Hong Kong and follow up with Chi Chung's health -- killing two birds with one stone.
She said that wanted to make Iman into a new generation hunk. In the films she arranged for him to play the police commissioner. "Earlier I went with my husband Chan Chi Chung to the U.S. for treatment. Since the nurses had many patients to take care, sometimes they would forget about his condition. I was terrified. A friend said that Iman is a great doctor and would treat patients until they are well. So I asked him to follow Chi Chung's condition. He is tall, cool and handsome, he even writes new poetry and has many female fans in North America. I feel he have a lot of on screen potential and is very suitable for the Hong Kong film industry." Chi Chung joked that when he was staring at Iman from his sick bed, he too felt he was very cool.
Ho Chiu Yi joked she wanted to sign Iman to a lifetime contract. She even came up with a Chinese name for Iman, "Yi Man" and hoped that she could get him to stay in Hong Kong. "With Iman around to keep an eye on Chi Chung, I can instantly know when his wound hurts or his diet has any issue, how to make improvements so he wouldn't have to constantly go to the hospital. Two years go we spent our birthdays, anniversary and even Christmas at the hospital. I am very scared that if we keep living like this my husband might kill himself. Iman has helped us a lot." Chi Chung said, "I wouldn't, I wouldn't."
Speaking of director Pang Fat's wife is fighting cancer, would they ask Iman to provide medical opinion? Chi Chung said, "When everyone is together at work, he would provide professional opinions for Chan Ka Lok's pregnant wife and Pang Fat's ailing wife." Iman said that after becoming a doctor, it was his lifelong career. He could not give up this duty of saving people, but was very happy to have a chance to try making a movie. He said that he really liked his Chinese name, 4 times more than American rapper 50 cent. He also introduced himself in Cantonese on the spot. Ho Chiu Yi was very happy to be able to work with Chan Ka Lok and Iman. She knew that Chan Ka Lok's performance in THE GOLDFINGER (GUM SAU JI) received good reviews, and she felt that she had an eye for talent, as she also invited the recently rising in popular Cheung Man Kit to play role.
Chan Ka Lok shaved his head for another movie three months ago. This time in SUP FONG FAT SI he would play a sloppy cop, so he did not get a hair cut for three months. He would grow his hair long for another new movie later. During the audition Director Pang Fat said that his hairstyle has not been seen before and would be suitable for the character. Even his wife Shiga Lin pointed out that his new hair style looked exactly like a cartoon character's! With a past relationship with Ka Lok in the film, Tong Yee played a medical examiner who would investigate the case with him. In addition German Cheung Man Kit would play a cult killer, responsible for hitting Ka Lok in the film. Ka Lok was not afraid of getting hit, as he believed that Cheung Man Kit would know how to accommodate him. Cheung Man Kit heard, stared at Ka Lok and said, "No, the team told me to hit with all my might!"
Speaking of his wife's approaching due date, Ka Lok has been working non-stop and would fly to Malaysia to start work later. Losing over 10 pounds, Ka Lok denied that his pressure was growing from becoming a father soon and said that he was losing weight for another film. Meanwhile he has already come up with an English name for the baby. When asked if he has already prepared the "baby stuff", he replied, "I know getting something that other children have used is a type of blessing. Suen Wai Suet has been great; she has already sent me a bag of things. (Both of hers are boys, meaning so will be yours?) Don't be so sensitive. My wife will announce the English name and the gender next week. (On this past Mother’s Day, did you give anything to mommy for the baby? ) I asked (Nicholas) Tse Ting Fung's manager to buy a bag for me in the UK." Reporters said that he has already spoiled the reveal, Ka Lok immediately asked everyone not to misunderstand. When Tong Yee came to his aid and said that she too has prepared to give him some of her daughter's stuff, Ka Lok finally breathed a sigh of relief. Cheung Man Kit joked that he too wanted to give his blessing. "I would give Ka Lok the clothes I have worn, for the child to wear after he grows up." Ka Lok joked, "Your film character Sei Jai blew up, you are better off saving 'Sei Jai' for me!" Cheung Man Kit might be a good fighter, but he revealed that he was very afraid of ghost. Tong Yee said that she would resist listening to friends tell ghost stories, but she would have no problem with a horror film performance.
