Hong Kong show business' "villain of the generation" Shek Kin passed away at the age of 96. Shek Kin (originally named Shek Wing Cheung) two days ago at 4PM passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with his children by his side. The funeral will take place on June 25 at the World Funeral Home with a Christian ceremony. The Silven Screen's Tough Guy Trio of Master Kwan Tak hing, Cho Tat Wa and Shek Kin has worked together on over 100 WONG FEI HUNG films.

Three past silver screen tough guys Shek Kin, Cho Tat Wa and Kwan Tak Hing have passed away one after another.

Shek Kin's health has been fading in recent years. His leg muscle dystrophy has left him immobile and requiring the use of cane and wheelchair. Uncle Kin also had urinary system problem and required a catheter. Recently Uncle Kin's respiratory system failed and earlier was hospitalized until two afternoons ago when he passed away.

Daughter: Peaceful And Pleasant When He Passed

Performing Artist Guild assistant chair Cheung Kuen contacted Uncle Kin's daughter, who stated that when her father passed he was very peaceful and pleased. He no longer had to suffer in bed and could see her late mother and good friends again. Uncle Kin's daughter also said, her father could continue to practice gong fu in the other world and under the care of the Heavenly Father.

Public Viewing Then A Memorial

Cheung Kuen expressed that Uncle Kin's family would handle Uncle Kin's affairs. Uncle Kin's funeral will be open to the public for final respect. After the funeral a memorial will be held.

Shek Kin has been in film for 54 years, over half a century. In 1993 he officially retired from show business. From the big movie silver screen to the television screen, Uncle Kin has played all kinds of villains; on the silver screen he was always Wong Fei Hung's rival. His "Heavenly Foot" in BUDDHA'S PALM (YU LOI SUN JEUNG) has become a deep memory of last century's Cantonese films.

Deep Impression With Ching Yat Lung, Tse Shun

Uncle Shun in the early 80s worked on a mint drop commercial. With the classic line "Who is more evil than me?" He was crowned "Villain Kin" and the mint drop was called "Villain candy". In real life, Shek Kin was Mr. Nice Guy in everyone's mind. He joined TVB and his series characters from HOTEL (KONG CHIU)'s Ching Yat Lung to HEAVEN SWORD AND DRAGON SABRE (YI TIN DOH LUNG GEI)'s Golden Mane Lion King Tse Shun all left deep impression.

[2009.06.05] FROM MAKE UP ARTIST TO VILLAIN KIN

Shek Kin was originally named Shek Wing Cheung, his family originated from Panyu, Guangdong. Born on January 1 1913 and raised by his step mother, he was weak and often sick as a child so he practiced martial arts to strengthen his body. During the War against Japanese Aggression, Shek Kin quited school and joined the war effort. Even he planned Anti Japanese plays and performed in both Guangdong and Hong Kong. In 1936 Shek Kin and Lee Kit Ying wed. They had 4 sons and a daughter.

Late in life and less than mobile, Uncle Kin remained at home most of the time. In a 2005 home interview, he still looked heroic despite the silver hair and brows.

Shek Kin strengthened his body with martial art since childhood and looked rather tough in this childhood photo.

Most Memorable Villain Image

Once studied stage make up and lighting, Shek Kin in 1940 was the make up artist for Cantonese Opera elder Sit Kok Sin. In the same year Shek Kin participated in the spy film FLOWER IN A SEA OF BLOOD (HUET HOI FA) and officially joined show business. In 1949 Shek Kin was invited to make the Wong Fei Hung film series. In the first Wong Fei Hung film THE TRUE STORY OF WONG FEI HUNG (BIN FUNG MIT JUK) he played Wong Fei Hung's chief rival. His villain image was the most memorable and earned him the"Villain Kin" title.

Numerous Classic Television Series

In Shek Kin's first 20 years in film, he mostly played villains. His trademark evil laugh has become villain actors' imitation target. In 1975 Shek Kin officially joined TVB. His first television series was GUNGFEI YIT, then HOTEL (KONG CHIU) and HEAVENLY SWORD AND DRAGON SABER were all considered classics.

Property Donation To Support Performing Art Culture

In 1993 Shek Kin officially retired from the film industry. At the time his final film and television work was the film HONG KONG ADAM'S FAMILY (GAN YUN SAI GA). In 1998 Shek Kin's beloved wife Lee Kit Ying passed away. In 2006 Shek Kin donated a property under his name to performing art cultural group in support of the industry. Shek Kin in 2007 was a model for a charity calendar, which was felt very honored. Two days ago (June 3) in the afternoon, Shek Kin passed away at the Queen Elizabeth hospital at the age of 96.

Cantonese film actor Shek Kin (Uncle Kin) passed away yesterday. Industry insiders were all sad from the news. Artists recalled working and being with Uncle Kin. They all expressed that "Villain Kin" in real life was Mr. Nice Guy. Kind and righteous, he took great care of the younger generation and was willing to teach actors how to act. He was very easy going and serious about work. The way Uncle Kin lived his life was worthy of younger generation to learn from.

Alan Tam: Performing Artist Guild Funeral Assistance

Performing Artist Guild chair Alan Tam Wing Lun said over the phone, "When I went to PAG meetings earlier, Uncle Kin would always be at tea. At the time I greeted him and he was still very lively. Uncle Kin was already 96, I could only say 'once in a lifetime'. I know that when he lost his wife he was unhappy but still strong. PAG contacted Uncle Kin's children, if necessary we would assist with the funeral." Alan once was assigned to present an award to the immobile Uncle Kin. Gordon Liu (Lau Ka Fai) said, "I have never worked with Uncle Kin, but I have worked with his oldest son Shek Chi Bun as stunt coordinators and at the gym. I was very familiar with Uncle Kin. Last year I visited Uncle Kin twice, at the time he was still in great spirit."

Clifton Ko: Uncle Kin and Kwan Tak Hing Fought For Real

Clifton Ko Chi Sum: "Uncle Kin's final film should be my ONCE UPON A TIME A HERO IN CHINA (WONG FEI HUNG SIU JUEN). Although he only guest starred a few days, he still performed very well, unrivaled. He feel that Shek Kin and the late Kwan Tak Hing had a connection. In nearly100 WONG FEI HUNG, Kwan Tak Hing always played the hero; but the kind and righteous one had to play the 'bear'. In 75, they worked together on 13 episodes of the television series WONG FEI HUNG. At the time I was a production assistant. I witnessed Uncle Kin's resignation after four episodes because he no longer wanted to play Villain Kin. He felt that reprising this character wsa very tiring. For their final fight scene, Uncle Kin told the stunt coordinator not to design action. 'Let's fight for real'. Kwan Tak hing agreed. We were all stunned. During the fight,Uncle Kin of course was more energetic!"

Eric Tsang: Younger Folks Can Learn From His Life

Eric Tsang Chi Wai: "Uncle Kin and I last worked together on the film MILLIONAIRE'S EXPRESS. Uncle Kin was very nice, totally different on and off screen. Uncle Kin played so many character, the most classic of course was Villain Kin. The way he lived his life was well worth us younger folks to learn from. I am working on a movie in Wuxi. For Uncle Kin's funeral if I will be in Hong Kong I definitely will attend."

Chow Yun Fat Drove Uncle Kin To The Doctors

Chow Yun Fat: "Uncle Kin lived to the age of 96, which would be a happy passing. I worked with him on television series HOTEL, BROTHERS, and the film A BETTER TOMORROW III (YING HUNG BOON SIK 3 YIK YEUNG JI GOR), he was a very talkative nice guy, with a lot of actor's professionalism." Did Uncle Kin teach you a few martial art moves? "No, I have seen Uncle Kin in a few years. When Aunt Kin passed, I visited Uncle Kin. At the time no one looked after him. I would drive him to the doctors. He wasn't too mobile, but it came and went."

Patrick Tse Yin: "Passing at 96 would be a happy passing. I haveworked with Uncle Kin but we weren't too close. I had little contact with the elders, but Uncle Kin was a very professional artist. Although he always played villains, in real life he was very righteous. He was my elder, on the day of his funeral if I will be in Hong KOng I definitely will pay my respect. I am afraid that after I die, no one will come."

Lee Heung Kam: He Did His Own Make Up

Lee Heung Kam's heart ached when she heard about uncle Kin's passing. "I always said that I would visit Uncle Kin but I never did. I haven't seen him in several years." Sister Kam said about working with Uncle Kin, "I didn't work on too many Cantonese films with him because he mainly worked on martial art films. However I know his make up job was amazing, he always did his own make up. Other people were very afraid ofuncle Kin because Uncle Kin fought with real gong fu. Once he and I worked on a struggle scene, he just pressed my arm once and it was already bruised. The most memorable was working together on the television series HOTEL, I played Uncle Kin's wife. We rarely talked. Uncle Kin was very serious and did not joke around much."

Tony Leung: I Grew Up Watching Uncle Kin

Tony Leung Chiu Wai: "I grew up watching Uncle Kin. Uncle Kin was an artist who I admired and respected. Now that he has passed, of course it is regretable. I hope his family won't be too sad." Shuet Nei said, "Back then working with Uncle Kin was pretty scary, because he was amazing, fast and accurate. In addition he would chase you during the fight; however he was very nice, never nagged, very willing to give advice to co-stars and new comers. He was very easy going. Uncle Kin personally was a low key and gentle man, completely different from the character in the film. On Uncle Kin's days off, he would 'dress up' and go out."

Wu Fung: I Saw Stars After His Fight

Wu Fung: "When I heard about his passing, of course I was sorry. Actually he was been ill for a long time and had a very tough time. Maybe because he had too many fight scenes, his bones had problems. Seeing him like this broke my heart. We didn't work together much, but we chatted. We worked on a movie with Yu So Chau and Ng Kwan Lai. Uncle Kin was very serious on the set, very hard working during fight scenes. Many people were afraid of him, afraid that he would knock them out. He once slapped me, I saw stars afterwards but I didn't blame him."

Carol Cheng Yui Ling: "Uncle Kin was an elder who people respected. His departure was very regretable and heartbreaking. I benefited a lot from working with him. Uncle Kin in so many WONG FEI HUNG always played Villain Kin, actually he was very kind, a very nice elder who constantly helped the younger generation. His Villain Kin imagewas memorable, unforgettable, and a great symbol."

Connie Chan: Heartache

Chan Bo Chu: "I had a heartache and was very sad to hear about Uncle Kin's passing because when I was little I already worked with Uncle Kin. In my impression, Uncle Kin was Mr. Nice Guy, good father and good husband. He took great care of the younger generation so it was very regrettable. I would always miss him."

On Tak Chuen: Spar With His Buddies In Heaven

On Tak Chuen: "I wish Uncle Kin would be with his late co-starsCho Tat Wa, Kwan Tak Hing and Sai Gua Pau, reunited in Heaven and spar again." On Tak Chuen remembered his godfather Cho Tat Wa and Uncle Kin once ran into each other at a Performing Artist Guild event. They even talked about the past and had a great time. On Tak Chuen said, "I visited Uncle Kin with PAG, he even joked about moving overseas. Although he wasn't mobile, when I messed with him, he would chop my neck with his hand."

Shek Kin earlier passed away at the age of 96. Yesterday at the Universal Funeral Home, Uncle Kin' son Shek Chi Bun in the company of Ting Yu and Cheung Kuen expressed thanks to the media's concern. Many film professionals who have worked with Uncle Kin came to pay their respect. The funeral would be a Christian ceremony and take place today at 10:30AM. The remain would be transported for cremation then buried with his wife in the Pok Fu Lam Chinese Christian cemetery.

Because Uncle Kin's family wanted to remain low key, the altar was wrapped in white cloth and prohibited press photo and video recording. No viewing was arranged for family and friends either. Uncle Kin's nine grandchildren and grandson in law were the pallbearers. Yesterday artists included Ken Low Wai Kwong, Gordon Lau Ka Fai, Lau Ka Leung, Connie Chan Bo Chu, Alan Tang Kwong Wing, Ng Man Tat, Ng See Yuen, Kwan Hong Chuen, Joe Cheung Tung Cho and Seven Little Fortunes.

Nancy Sit Ka Yin arrived around 6PM. She expressed that Uncle Kin was Mr. Nice Guy who watched her grow up and took great care of her. He never yelled at anyone. She pointed out that Uncle Kin's favorites were milk tea and cake. He also was a Master who respected and enjoyed his job with real gong fu. Her most memorable films with Uncle Kin were THE KILLING SWORD (DUEN MING DOH) and THREE DESPERADOS (SAM SAT SAU). Sister Ka Yin pointed out that she was naturally sad about Uncle Kin's passing, but he was already at quite a high age.

Ng See Yuen expressed that Uncle Kin's work attitude was serious. He was very punctual, which was worthy of younger generations to learn from. Ng See Yuen expressed that the Film Worker Union earlier wanted to make a short film for the Bruce Lee Memorial Hall. Originally it wanted to approach Shek Kin, but Uncle Kin at the time already had a tube down his throat so it was never done. He regretted that. Uncle Kin and Bruce Lee's ENTER THE DRAGON was truly exciting. He expressed that the Union is considering a film exhibit for Uncle Kin. Bo Chu also praised Uncle Kin as a nice guy who took great care of the younger folks. They worked together on several dozen films, the most memorable was LADY IN DISTRESS: THE INVINCIBLE FIGHTER.

Tang Kwong Wing pointed out that Uncle Kin was very nice. He heard that Uncle Kin once in Guangzhou subdued a Japanese soldier. When he first made action films he did not know how to fight. He really chopped at Uncle Kin's head with a real sword and knocked off his head piece. At the time Uncle Kin looked like he was in a lot of pain, but he instead comforted him. He missed Uncle Kin very much.

[2009.06.05] FROM VILLAIN KIN TO WONG FEI HUNG

Shek Kin has been in film for 53 years. With the role of Villain Kin he has become a household name. His trademarke evil laughter was memorable. Uncle Kin's acting was excellent, his portrayal of Villain Kinoutstanding. His Golden Mane Lion King in HEAVENLY SWORD AND DRAGON SABREand BUDDHA'S PALM's Heavenly Leg were just as unforgettable. Studying martial art since childhood, Uncle Kin's abilities were extraordinary and naturally quite handy in martial art films.

Uncle Kin since his first film FLOWER IN A SEA OF BLOOD (HUET HOI FA) has made hundreds of films, he performed in nearly 100 just for the WONG FEI HUNG film series alone and successfully built the "Villain Kin" villain image; WONG FEI HUNG even created a proud record in the Guiness Book of World Records. Uncle Kin once said that back then he frequently made WONG FEI HUNG because of its great overseas sales. Many film bossesused this film for "emergency". In 1973, Bruce Lee cast Shek Kin in the film ENTER THE DRAGON to play the villain Mr. Han. Their duels thoroughly showed the structures of martial art.

Defending Golden Mane Lion King

Uncle Kin in 1975 joined TVB. His first television series was GUNG FU YIT, which was right up his alley. Then he performed in many classic series, including HOTEL, HEAVEN SWORD AND DRAGON SABRE, RACING PEAK (DAI HUNG), THE GIANTS (KEUNG YUN), LEGEND OF CONDOR HEROES 1983 (SEH DIU YING HUNG JUEN ji DUNG CHE SAI DUK); he also continued his evil ways in television. In HOTEL he played Ching Yat Lung, who looked like arighteous hotel CEO but underneath he was a big villain who was smugglingand trafficking drugs; in THE LEGEND OF THE BOOK AND THE SWORD he played Cheung Jiu Chung, who was evil to the bones. The raise of the corner of his mouth and his eyebrow were all his trademark villain expressions.

Accepted As A Good Guy

HEAVEN SWORD AND DRAGON SABER's Golden Mane Lion King was also Uncle Kin's representative work, but he once defended Golden Mane Lion King. He claimed that he was not a villain, but a tragic figure who had too many tragedies in his life and was led to believe no one in the world was good. In the end he still turned good.

Thus in television he played many gentle elder roles, like THE GOOD, THE BADY AND THE UGLY (MONG JUNG YUN)'s Lung Koon Sam, THE BROTHERS (CHUN CHING)' So Dai Pang, THE FEUD OF TWO BROTHERS (LAU MUN DAI HUNG)'s Grandfather. The audience accepted all ofthem. Countless top artists have worked with Uncle Kin, like Connie Chan Bo Chu, Josephine Siao Fong Fong, Chow Yun Fat, Carol Cheng Yui Ling, Deborah Li (Dik Bor Lai), and Jackie Chan.

Uncle Kin took part in several hundred performances, his performing art achievement was top notch. In 1995 he received the Hong Kong Film Critic Association Golden Bauhinia Lifetime Achievement Award; in 2003, he and Cho Tat Wa received the Hong Kong Film Award Professional Spirit Award; in 2004, Uncle Kin left his mark on the Avenue of Stars.

[2009.06.05] BRUCE LEE CAST HIM BY NAME IN ENTER THE DRAGON

Shek Kin in 1940 joined show business. He has participated in 350 films, the most famous of course had to be the WONG FEI HUNG film series. He always opposed the Master Kwan Tak Hing played Wong Fei Hung.

WONG FEI HUNG Sets World Record

Over 100 WONG FEI HUNG films were made and created the world record for the most film in a series. The Uncle Kin played villain although would always lose to Wong Fei Hung in the end, Uncle Kin was outstandingly evil and thus it became his representative role.

Strong For A 61 Year Old

Among the glory of Uncle Kin, one must mention ENTER THE DRAGON, his collaboration with Bruce Lee. At the time Uncle Kin was already 61 years old, but he was still very agile. Uncle Kin's abilities caught Bruce Lee's eyes as he invited him to play the role of Mr. Han, and they traded blows in the film.

Louis Cha's Personal Calligraphy

"SPIRIT AS STRONG AS STONE" was the calligraphy that Louis Cha(Gum Yung) personally created for Shek Kin. After joining TVB Shek Kin has performed in many Gum Yung novel based series, including THE ROMANCE OF THE BOOK AND THE SWORD (SHU GIM YUN SAU LOK), HEAVENLY SWORD AND DRAGON SABER (YI TIN TOH LUNG GEI), DEMI-GOD AND SEMI-DEVIL (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji HUI JUK JUEN KEI), CONDOR HEROES (SUN DIU HUP LUI) and FLYING FOX OF SNOWY MOUNTAIN (SHUET SAN FEI WU). Among them HEAVENLY KING's Golden Mane Lion King Tse Shun was the most memorable, even the original creator Gum Yung praised him and presented him with the calligraphy.

A Lifetime of Contribution To Performing Arts

Shek Kin gave a lifetime of contribution to show business. In 1992 TVB held a farewell program of him. Back then Uncle Kin bid farewell to television and TVB presented a gold plaque to Uncle Kin. In 1995 he received the Golden Bauhinia Award Lifetime Achievement award. In2003, Uncle Kin, Cho Tat Wa, Sai Gua Pau all received the Hong Kong Film Award Professional Spirit Awards. In 2004 Uncle Kin left his mark on the Avenue of Stars.

The funeral of the villain of a generation Shek Kin was held yesterday at the World Funeral Home. A ceremony was held around 10:30AM then the remain was transported for cremation. His ashes will be buried with his late wife Aunt Kin in the Pok Fu Lam Chinese Christian ceremony.

Uncle Kin's friends included Connie Chan Bo Chu, Shek Sau, Lo Dai Wai, Wu Fung, Nam Hung, Lee Heung Kam, Ng Kwan Lai, Melvin Wong Kam Sun and Chiu Nga Chi, Tsui Siu Ming and others yesterday came early to pay their final respect. Chow Yun Fat, Barbara Yung Mei Ling Hong Kong fan club, Eason Chan Yik Shun and his wife and others sent flowers. Shek Sau expressed that the farewell ceremony was very serious and peaceful. He believed that this was the ceremony that Uncle Kin would like. He also pointed out that Uncle Kin was his idol. They played father and son on series. At the time they truly had a father and son feeling. He would like TVB to arrange for a series re-run.

Chan Bo Chu praised Uncle Kin for his respect of his job. Even after years in the business, for every movie he would arrive early on the set. He even paid attention to costumes in order for everything to be perfect. At the same time he treated people very well and was not evil at all. Wu Fung also pointed out that Uncle Kin was someone who respected and enjoyed his job, serious at whatever he did. Since he was able to create the Villain Kin character he was exceptional. As for his most memorable moment of working with Uncle Kin, he said, "Once in a series he slapped me, he really did it and I saw stars afterward!" Sister Kam pointed out that she has seen he and Kwan Tak Hing truly fought during rehearsal. The atmosphere was serious. Looking on from the sideline she was concerned. Also, Nam Hung expressed that she has worked with Uncle Kin on over ten films. She remembered the most about how he took care of the younger generation, how great he was to his wife. She advised young people to properly learn from Uncle Kin's passion for family and respect for his wife.

When Shek Kin's remain was transported for cremation, family and friends were mournful. Carrying Shek Kin's photo son Shek Chi Bun even covered his face with the photo to keep others from seeing his sorrow and reluctance. When family and friends left, the sky went dark and rain came. The crew had to carry umbrellas for family and friends. Uncle Kin early in the month passed away at the age of 96.

On screen Shek Kin absolutely was an absolute villain, playboy,actually personally he was the opposite of his image! Anyone who knew Uncle Kin knew, he was Mr. Nice Guy who never smoked, never drank, and loved his family 100%, after years in show business he never had any gossip.

62 Years of Marriage, Praised Wife To Everyone

In 1931, Uncle Kin in an amateur drama troupe met the then student Lee Kit Ying (Aunt Kin). They became good friends and got along famously,later they both joined the patriot drama troupe as their relationship suddenly took off. Later in 1936 they wed and spent 62 years together. Uncle Kin was a well known good husband in the business. Every time he performed, worked or traveled overseas, he would bring his wife along. To everyone, Uncle Kin praised his wife for taking care of their home and for being the best partner at work. She served as his manager as she handled his film offers, schedules and salary negotiations.

Baptized For Aunt Kin

Aunt Kin was a Christian since she was little, Uncle Kin though was an atheist. One year, Aunt Kin was ill for months without any sign of recovery. Uncle Kin prayed for the Lord to protect his beloved wife and received baptism in hopes of a speedy recovery for his wife. Aunt Kin in 1998 passed away. Years later Uncle Kin in media interviews still stated that he still missed his wife a lot. Their love was touching!

Communicated With Notes to Children

Uncle Kin back then made many martial art films, actually he loved literature. Back then in order for his wife and six children to live the good life, he joined the film industry and worked day and night. Although he made a lot of money, he had less time to communicate with children. Uncle Kin once in an interview revealed that back then he made movies everyday and relied on notes to communicate with his children. Luckily his children were obedient and understanding, after growing up they each made their achievement and were very filial. Although late in his life Uncle Kin was immobile, he had children and grandchildren galore. Every weekend, Uncle Kin would meet with his children, children in law, and grandchildren and enjoyed family time. Life was rather pleasant.

Shek Kin's passing brought regret to many industry insiders who have worked with him and brought back memories of their past together.

Lam Ka Wah: Talkative And Optimistic

Lam Ka Wah: "Uncle Kin was the Cantonese film era villain representative. He himself wasn't evil and always had a smile on his face. When I heard about his passing I was very upset! Aside from WONG FEI HUNG's Villain Kin, my deepest impression of Uncle Kin was in HOTEL, his three piece suit and long coat tycoon character. Back then he and I worked together on the series NO ONE IS INNOCENT (JUK GOR JUK), the entire series only had 7 or 8 actors, we always chatted. At first I was very afraid of him because he was very famous and did not speak much. Actually he was very talkative, optimistic, when he talked he would not nag or lecture. He told me a lot about life and his past fight scenes."

Lee Tim Sing: Could Not Be Nicer

Lee Tim Sing: "I already knew Brother Kin in the early 70s. At the time he switched to television and I worked with him on a series thatI produced, BROTHERS. Later he stopped working on television and we no longer had contact. However because Aunt Kin was a TVB artist, so I would hear about Brother Kin. I knew that he had to be in a wheelchair due to nerve pains. When Aunt Kin passed, I no longer had any news of Brother Kin. Although he looked evil, in real life he couldn't be nicer. Now his time has come, nothing we can do."

Roger Kwok Chun On: "When I got into the business, Uncle Kin was already 70 something. I once saw him at the TVB anniversary. At the time I was still new, I thought he was very serious so I was very afraid of him. I didn't dare to speak to him. However he was very friendly, full of smile, he came over and greeted me. He took great care of the younger folks and even told me to keep working hard."

Wai Ying Hung: "Uncle Kin was more familiar with my brother Wai Tin Chi. Last year my family and I had tea with him once. At the time his mind was very clear, only that he was not mobile and needed a wheelchair. During the Shaw days, Uncle Kin and I worked together on a movie. At the time I was only in the business for one or two years. He like a manager and an elder asked about my life goal and made me start thinking about this question."
