Renowned veteran actor and dancer Lau Siu Ming (Ming Sir) passed away yesterday at the age of 94. Veteran voice actor Ting Yu confirmed the news of Lau Siu Ming's death, stating that Lau passed away at 6 p.m. yesterday. Lau Siu Ming has been out of the spotlight for many years, requiring a wheelchair due to mobility difficulties and has rarely appeared publicly in recent years. He has been described as a pioneer in Hong Kong's dance scene. In his early years he studied dance in France and was the first Hong Kong dancer to take the lead role at an international theatre. He worked as a dancer and choreographer at the Belgian National Ballet. After returning to Hong Kong he created his first ballet, 'Sea Love,' and founded the Hong Kong Experimental Musical Troupe. In the 1970s Lau Siu Ming joined the television station as head of the dance department and was also one of the founders of the Hong Kong Ballet Society and the Hong Kong Dance Association.

In 1979, Liu Siu Ming was invited by Tsui Hark to star in the film THE BUTTERFLY MURDER (DIP BIN) and officially entered the film industry. He went on to star in many memorable film and television works. In the movie 'A CHINSE GHOST STORY (SIN NUI YAU WON)' he played the villain, and the androgynous and eerie tree spirit 'Granny' became a classic. His TV dramas have also deeply resonated with the public, including POLICE CADET, THE SHELL GAME II, and THE LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES. In 2013 Lau Siu Ming received the TVB Anniversary Awards for Entertainers and was awarded the badge of honor by the SAR government in the same year. Lau Siu Ming then faded from the spotlight for a long time. In 2017 when he appeared in the TVB drama 'BET HUR,' he revealed that he did not make a drama for a long time because he felt that he has lost his most loyal fans due to his wife's passing in 2012. Lau Siu Ming's contract with TVB ended in 2019. In 2020 he appeared in the ViuTV drama "THE GUTTER," which became his last TV drama.

In recent years Lau Siu Ming has lived a very low-key life, living a reclusive life. A group of younger colleagues, such as Sean Lau Ching Wan, Francis Ng Chun Yu, and Cheung Tat Ming, often visited him. In 2024 he appeared at a reception celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China by Hong Kong's cultural and arts community, from where Pierre Ngo Ka Nin posted a photo with Lau Siu Ming in a wheelchair. In an interview Lau Siu Ming said he needed someone to push his wheelchair and relied on domestic helpers to take care of him, which caused him to turn down a lot of work as he needed rest. When asked about his health, Lau Siu Ming admitted that he was afraid of excessive public attention and needing to explain further.
