Cancer fighter and former Miss Hong Kong second runner up
Natalie Ng Man Yan (now Ng Yan Hei) fought bravely against cancer for a
long time but finally succumbed to the illness. Yesterday (9th) in the
early morning at the hospital she passed away in her sleep peacefully at
the age of 51. Her family announced the bad news through their
social media platform, confirming that she was admitted to the hospital
on the evening of June 7th, and the two daughters, family members and
close friends were by her side when she passed. The family also
thanked the outside world for their constant concern and support, and
implored the outside world to give space for the family to deal with the
aftermath and get through this difficult time. The two daughters
will be under the care of by her former husband Chan Kim Ling, and the
arrangements will be announced later.
This brave cancer fighter's life has come to an end, but her
toughness and tenderness would endure in the world. As early as August
2024, Ng Man Yan announced the news of breast cancer recurrence. At
the time the cancer cells have deteriorated to stage 4, and have spread
to the liver, bones and brain. Her condition was extremely critical.
Yet she never gave up, always facing the illness and pain with an
optimistic and strong attitude.
Ng Man Yan under the attack of chemotherapy and pneumonia went
back and forth to Shenzhen for treatment. Under the double blow of
divorce and sudden death of her father, her smile and courage still
were never obliterated. The family mentioned in the eulogy, "In this
journey of fighting cancer, Man Yan was always strong and brave. In a
limited time she did a lot that she has never even thought of, achieved
many dreams. At the same time her positive energy also affected many
on the same journey of facing the disease, with a positive attitude to
face the challenge of life."
Ng Man Yan's last public appearance was at the end of April at
the Grasshoppers' 40th anniversary concert. At that time she sat in
the front row and shook hands with Calvin Choy Yat Chi, and received a
hug and a kiss from Remus Choy Yat Kit in the audience as
encouragement. She was excited to post on the social platform
afterwards. "Thank you to the Grasshoppers for giving me a lot of
teenage memories, Choy Yat Kit also stepped off the stage to hug and
kiss me, I am super excited and a little flattered. Brother Kit, we
have to work hard together, let's go!" In the face of the medication's
side effects, Ng Man Yan first took care of her emotions as her words
were still strong and humorous. In May last year, Sammi Cheng Sau Man
specifically approached the audience at the Macao concert and said
softly to Ng Man Yan, "Let's go, don't be afraid!" At that moment she
burst into tears.
After the bad news came out, many artists and friends such as
Cheng Sau Man, Linda Chung Ka Yan, Carlos Chan Ka Lok, Shiga Lin,
Jennifer Yu Heung Ying left messages to mourn. Cheng Sau Man wrote,
"Rest in peace with The Lord rests, we will remember you." Miss Hong
Kong of the same pageant year, Anne Heung Hoi Lan even wrote to recall
their past. "A few days ago was the 28th anniversary of our 1998 Miss
Hong Kong pageant, when my heart suddenly felt uneasy.....If I
remembered to give her a phone call last week, maybe it would have been
the last time we talk." Heung Hoi Lan revealed she originally planned
to meet Ng Man Yan after completing her work but did not make it,
leaving only regret. She recalled that Ng Man Yan in the past was
always full of energy and a bright smile. She lamented the
impermanence of life, and advised for people to cherish those around
them.
"Nat Nat will always be our Lek Lek, and we are proud of her."
Her family wrote. Even if life was short-lived, Ng Man Yan's strength
and warmth have never dissipated. She faced suffering in adversity,
walked towards the light, fought illness and pain with a smile, and
inspired others with her experience. This perseverance will remain in
the hearts of the public forever.
"Unwilling to leave" two young daughters, aged 10 and 8 years
old respectively, she adopted a medical strategy of "casting a wide
net" in order to fight the illness. She went all over Hong Kong,
Thailand and Shenzhen in the mainland, was even willing to try medicine
as a "lab rat". Her will to survive was extremely tenacious. At the
beginning of this year her condition repeatedly deteriorated. She was
obviously thin when she appeared on a TVB program interview in early
March, and revealed that her condition of her chest has turned sharply;
not only did it emit the pus emit but also odor. In mid-March, after
she was examined in a hospital, she confirmed that the cancer had
spread to both sides of the brain, and the tumor was about 1 cm. In
the face of great fear, she collapsed in the middle of the night but
then chose to face with strong faith. She firmly said in the hospital
bed, "Heaven gave me an experience, I instead am very confident, I will
get better, I want to be a cancer survivor witness! I have to say to
fellow cancer fighters never give up. I too believe that I can get
better, definitely!" She also held a "living memorial event", as she
faced the fight with optimism.
On the long road to fight cancer, Ng Man Yan suffered not only
the pain of the flesh, but also the successive blows of fate. During
the cancer fighting period, she experienced the breakdown of her
marriage, divorced her ex-husband Chan Kim Ling, and successively moved
away from the mansion and sold the furniture online. Soon after she
suffered the bad news of her father's sudden death. With her strong
personality, she refused to bow to reality. After the news of cancer
was exposed, someone proposed to raise money for her but she refused.
Because the old insurance could not fully cover the huge expenses of
private hospitals, she went to the government hospital to queue up. In
order to raise medical expenses, she quietly sold all the gold ware
from when she got married, and went live online to sell her watch,
diamond jewelry and designer handbags she had bought in her early
years.
Ng Man Yan did not neglect to take care of her daughters due
to her illness, often taking them to after school activities,
performances and vacations. During the period she worked hard to chase
her dreams. Aside from publishing her autobiography REBORN BECAUSE OF
LOVE, she also fulfilled her singer dream and released her first
single REBORN. At the end of last year she even won the Metro Hit
Awards "Hit I Support Rookie" Award.
Kearen Pang Sau Wai and Ng Man Yan have known each other since
they were 6. Yesterday she posted a story with a night scene photo
and the Korean American Sam Ock's song THIS MOMENT HERE WITH YOU and
the video of Ng Man Yan surprising her at Commercial Radio.
