The Hong Kong Box Office Co. Ltd. announced yesterday the 2021 Hong Kong film market's overall situation. Due to the pandemic, cinemas in coordination with the government's pandemic prevention policy ceased operation for 48 days since January 1st last year and lost the Lunar New Year golden period. Although cinemas later resumed operation, admission rate was still restricted to be within 50% (February 18th to March 31st), 75% (April 1st to July 7th) and 85% (July 8th to present) -- all of which affected the 2021 overall box office. The total box office revenue of the year was HK$ 1,208,971,838; in comparison to the same period in 2020 when due to the pandemic cinemas were ordered to ceased operation 3 times for 116 days and the total box office of HK$ 536,925,187 it did not mean much. However with compared to the 2019's total revenue of HK$ 1,923,194,409 the decline was 37.14%. Obviously the 2021 Hong Kong film market still has not returned to the pre-pandemic level.
From January 1st to December 31st 2021, the year's highest grossing 10 Hong Kong films were ANITA (still in release) with a cumulative box office of HK$ 61,343,257; in second was ZERO TO HERO (MAMA DIK SUN KEI SIU JI) with HK$ 28,062,281; in third was RAGING FIRE with HK$ 26,374,851; from fourth to tenth were SHOCK WAVE 2 (CHAK DAN JUEN GA 2), ONE SECOND CHAMPION (YUT MIU KUEN WONG), THE WAY WE KEEP DANCING (KONG MO PAI 3), HAND-ROLLED CIGARETTE (SAU GUEN YIN), SHOWBIZ SPY (GA MO NUI TUEN), DRIFTING (SHOOK SHUI PIU LAU) and DYNASTY WARRIORS (JUN SAM GOK MO SEUNG). As for the highest grossing 10 non Hong Kong films, SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME (still in release) came in first with a cumulative box office of HK$ 111,317,623; in second was SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF TEN RINGS with HK$ 63,079,202; in third was NO TIME TO DIE with HK$ 54,043,194; from fourth to tenth were THE ETERNALS, BLACK WIDOW, GODZILLA VS.
