The 3 day long 21st Hong Kong Asian Film Financing Forum closed yesterday with the HAF awards. The ceremony announced 20 cash and non cash prize winning film projects. The cash prizes and other prizes were worth over US$ 170,000. Young Hong Kong filmmaker Sasha Chuk Chi Ngan with FLY ME TO THE MOON (DAN YUEN YUN CHEUNG GAU) won 4 awards and became the big winner.
The Chuk Chi Ngan directed, Kwan Kam Peng produced FLY ME TO THE MOON won the Heaven Pictures Young Director Award, the CCG Grand Award, MM2 Award, and the Work In Progress Awards. The film project at the sam time was selected to be one of the 5 film projects for HAF Goes to Cannes.
Taiwan's Lien Chien-hung with SALLI and Mainland' Guan Tian with THE POISON CAT won three awards. The Hong Kong International Film Festival Association chair Dr. Wong Ying Wai sincerely thanked the filmmakers and the sponsors for their support and participation, and Create Hong Kong, the Film Development Fund and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council for their support over the years, and sincerely congratulate all the winners.
Chuk Chi Ngan said that the film FLY ME TO THE MOON (DAN YUEN YUN CHEUNG GAU) has already been under preparation for 3 years, from the production start in July last year to the wrap in December. It shot on location in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tokyo. Currently it is in post production and would be released by the end of the year or early next year. She excitedly said that this was her first award show and immediately was surprised with many awards. She joked that producer Kwan Kam Peng's "gold painted sign" was watching over her. As for the cast, Director Chuk revealed that it would have Wu Kang-jen, Angela Yuen Lai Lam, Natalie Hsu (Hui Yan Yi) and other new faces. With the multiple awards this time, would she be able to answer to Kwan Kam Peng? She said, "He has always been toiling away behind the scenes. If he doesn't mind, I am very honored to be able to be his disciple." Chuk Chi Ngan said that the cash prizes would be used on post production and salaries. Because the production only accepted HK$ 5 million government assistance, many behind the scenes were doing favors. Some would even wait until after the film would break even before getting paid. At the same time she thanked Wu Kang-jen for being willing to take below the market rate for his performance. "Wu Kang-jen really likes this script; he took his mark without even looking at the salary."
