The Hong Kong film industry's deep freeze grows more and more severely. Among the Hong Kong films released in the first half of the year, only 4 exceeded HK$ 10 million at the box office -- a strong comtrast from last year when two movies exceeded HK$ 100 million. The Hong Kong Box Office Limited announced yesterday (2nd) that in the first half of 2025 (from January 1 to June 30), the total number of the first run film releases of Hong Kong and Macao is 140, of which 21 are Hong Kong films and 119 are non-Hong Kong films with a total box office revenue of HK$563,519,626. Compared with HK$672,970,785 in the same period last year, the box office fell by about 16.26%. The Chung Suet Ying and Neo Yau Hawk Sau starred THE WAY WE TALK (HONG NGOR GUM TIN JUM MOR SUET) exceeded HK$ 13.35 million to top the Hong Kong film box office; Nick Cheung Ka Fai's PEG O' MY HEART (SHOOK MUNG) with HK$ 13.28 million came in second. Mainland animation NEZHA 2 topped the non Hong Kong film box office with over HK$ 63.91 million, more than the top five highest grossing Hong Kong films' total box office revenue of HK$ 61.23 million in the first half of the year

TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) and THE LAST DANCE (POR. DEI YUK) last year exceeded HK$ 100 million at the box office last year. The brilliant performance seemingly gave the film industry a glimpse of daylight, but as the fever subsided, the Hong Kong film releases that followed could not continue the momentum as their box office performance was mediocre. In addition as the cinema closing wave continued and the drastic decline in Hong Kong film productions, the future of the Hong Kong film industry has become concerning.

According to the Hong Kong Box office Co. Ltd., in the first half of the year 2025 (January 1st to June 30th) the Hong Kong and Macau total first run film releases are 140, 12 are Hong Kong films and 119 are non Hong Kong films. The total box office revenue is HK$ 563,519,626. In comparison to HK$ 672,970,785 of the same period last year, the box office decline is around 16.26%.

The five highest-grossing Hong Kong films in the first half of the year were the Chung Suet Ying and Neo Yau Hawk Sau starred THE WAY WE TALK (HONG NGOR GUM TIN JUM MOR SUET), as of June 30th it has made HK$13,551,553. Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Fala Chen in PEG O' MY HEART (SHOOK MUNG) comes in second with HK$13,283,319. In third is the Louis Koo Tin Lok and Gigi Leung Wing Kei starred Lunar New Year film HIT N FUN (LUM SI KUET DAU) with HK$13,073,651. Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin and Louis Cheung Kai Chung's Lunar New Year film MY BESST BET (CHEUNG DOH BIT YANG) with HK$11,872,610 comes in fourth. In fifth is the Louis Koo Tin Lok and Neo Yau Hawk Sau starred VITAL SIGNS (SHOOK YUEN TOH JUNG) with HK$9,455,456 currently. Among the five movie, Koo Tin Lok and Yau Hawk Sau have two each.

As for the five highest-grossing non-Hong Kong films in the first half of the year, they were the still in release mainland animated film NEZHA 2 with HK$63,919,788 in first place. From second to fifth are Tom Cruise's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE -- FINAL RECKONING with HK$52,205,880, the Disney animation based live action film LILO AND STITCH with HK$29,121,892, the Marvel superhero film THUNDERBOLTS* with HK$23,932,985 and the video game based THE MINECRAFT MOVIE with HK$21,975,780. It is worth noting that the total box office revenue of the five Hong Kong-made films is HK$61,236,589, which is not as good as the still in release NEZHA 2.

The Hong Kong Box Office Co. Ltd mentioned that the summer vacation just starred, many high-quality Chinese and foreign blockbusters and suitable movies for families are being released and only the cinema can bring the audience an incomparable viewing experience. Hopefully the audience will go to the movies, and that the summer vacation schedule and the second half of the year would be able to reverse the decline in the first half of the year.
