Veteran artist Chow Chung died of pneumonia yesterday at the age
of 92. Devoted his life to acting, he has performed in many popular
works such as THE TEARS OF AH CHAN (FUI MING NUI YI), TWIN SWORDS (LUNG
FUNG GIM) and PASSIONATELY IN LOVE (CHI CHING YI NUI). He joined TVB in
1998 and has played the most popular roles in AT THE THRESHOLD OF AN ERA
(CHONG SAI GEI II TIN DEI YAU CHING) as the good father Yip Hau Kun and
the doting grandpa Chung Fan Tat in MOONLIGHT RESONANCE (TONG SUM FUNG
BO ji GA HO YUET YUEN). He even with the role of Chung Fan Tat received
a nomination in the TVB Awards Best Supporting Actor category. In 2016
he was awarded the TVB Lifetime Achievement award. His scene in the
film LOVE UNDERCOVER (SUN JAT SI MUI) with Benz Hui Siu Hung when he
asked, "How do you to write the word Sir in Fong Chung Sir?" even
became a classic. In 2020 he officially retired when his TVB contract
ended and the drama SINISTER BEINGS (YIK TIN KEI ONG) became his final
work. His final public appearance was at last year's Hong Kong
Performing Artists Guild spring banquet to receive the "Outstanding
Performing Artist Award". At the time he was in good spirit. Month
later he shot a video with good friend Cheung Kwok Keung and told dad
jokes.
In the business for almost 70 years, Chow Chung performed in
many classic works and was even known as "TVB's official Grandpa".
Originally named Sin Kam Wing, Chow Chung's stage name came from a
character in the famous play THUNDERSTORM. Born in the Year of the
Horse, he chose the character Chung with the character horse in it.
Before entering the business Chow Chung worked as a sales clerk. In
1955 he caught the eyes of producer Wong Hing Wah, through his
introduction he applied for a job as an actor. When Chow Chung first
started he thought about terminating the contract because he was not
used to it. Later he joined Sun Luen Film Company again under the
introduction of Wong Hing Wah and had more opportunities with elders.
Since then his self confidence greatly increased. Chow Sing was already
the lead actor in his film debut BROKEN ZITHER BOWER (SHUI KAM LAU).
Starting in the 1960s, he became the Kong Ngee Co.' feature actor and
starred in numerous Cantonese films like THE TEARS OF AH-CHAN, TWINS
SWORDS and PASSIONATELY IN LOVE. When Cantonese films declined, Chow
Chung bid a temporary farewell to the film industry and switched to
become a manager at a theater and once worked at a duty free shop. Chow
Chung had a deep relationship with his wife Chan Yee Wah. During his
wife's fight against cancer, he gave up all work and performances to
concentrate on accompanying his wife on her last journey.
Having collaborated with Chow Chung on SINISTER BEINGS,
television best actor Ruco Chan Chin Pang and best actress Rosina Lam Ha
Mei both felt sad. Chan Chin Pang said, "He has been with us in his
acting career and I will always remember his laughter. He is very
talkative and cheerful, and he encourages me all the time." Lam Ha Mei
said, "He is a very kind and very professional elder, and he is great to
everyone." A good friend of Chow Chung, Eric Chung Chi Kwong almost
visited him everyday at the hospital, He even revealed that he even
visited the day before yesterday. Chow Chung's family revealed that
Chow Chung was hospitalized for a month due to the novel coronavirus.
When he visited him the night before, he needed to wear an oxygen mask
and his condition was worse than before. Yesterday afternoon he received
the bad new from Chow Chung's son. He praised Uncle Chung for being
cultured, humble and polite. His family was with him all the while he
was at the hospital. Chung Chi Kwong expressed that he would greatly
miss Chow Chung.
Another frequent visitor Cheung Kwok Keung also revealed that
when he visited two nights ago, he thought that his condition was
rough. Yesterday he learned that he passed peacefully. "He was like a
treasure, I got to spend over a decade with him." He also praised Uncle
Chung as a responsible elder. His children constantly praised him for
raising the entire family, and that he loved his wife very much. A
friend of 70 years, Bowie Wu Fung admitted that he was very heartbroken.
He managed to see him for the last time at the hospital, and Chow Chung
was aware; Helena Law Lan was surprised to hear the news, admitting that
she has not seen him in a very long time. Lately she has received many
unhappy news and she wished everyone to take care; Nancy Sit Ka Yin
lamented that lately many old friends and elders passed away.
