Eddie Cheung Siu Fai (Brother Fai) played a father who lost his wife and children in the horror movie REBORN (HUNG SUM YUN). He said frankly in an interview with the media that this time it was the first time that he has acted so many emotional scenes after so many years. Although the story in the film is so sad, but it could remind the audience and people around them to take care of their families, especially when most husbands overlook their wives. Lacking communication to solve some things due to their own busy schedules, they would accumulate unpleasant family incidents. He hoped to bring everyone's attention to that through the movie.
In the film Brother Fai lost his son and wife. He admitted that he had hysterical shouting scenes, and what impressed him the most was the ending scene with his wife Venus Wong Man Yi in the film. Brother Fai fantasized about taking his deceased wife to a place he hasn't been to for a long time and asked, "Would it be too late?" As soon as the camera turned he had to express regret that it was too late. Brother Fai said, "Then my emotions came, I feel so much pain because Man Yi is in another world and she is in so much painful in another world. The audience would look at both worlds in a lot of pain!" Brother Fai pointed out that the shoot took place on location for most of the day. He and Man Yi had to hide and find a way to maintain their emotions, and director Danny Pang Fat was pacing around thinking about how to shoot this scene well. The staff on the set did not dare to harass him, and the atmosphere became very serious.
Brother Fai pointed out that another scene filmed in the paper offering shop also impressed him. In the story he has gone crazy, treating the two paper dolls like his wife and child who are no longer alive. They even smile at him. He said painfully, "The family is so happy and together!" During the filming, director Pang Fat suddenly said, "Take a few more glances. You didn't look before, but now you have to cherish it!" Brother Fai stated that when he heard that the words tug at his heart. After the cameras stopped rolling everyone walked out on their own. He saw director Pang Fat crying and he thought to himself, "The director is crying after watching, this scene is done!" However, Brother Fai later learned that Pang Fat was heartbroken because he has been taking care of his sick wife before. "I asked him why he was so heartbroken, and he only said one sentence: 'This is a work that I originally intended to be my last'. When I heard this, I couldn't help but be shocked and asked him why he said that. I thought he was just touched by this scene, as he himself was a little unable to bear it. He responded that he actually projected his emotions into the role, but he was just missing a child. He has many emotions that he doesn't want others to see, and even if he feels unhappy he tries to hide it. When I was filming with him, I felt that he shouldn't be making a horror movie. The atmosphere on the set was relaxed and happy, and I didn't notice that he was unhappy at all." Brother Fai finally found out that Pang Fat filmed that scene to vent his suppressed emotions inside.
Brother Fai said bluntly, "Many emotional scenes cut to the bone. Any normal person with feelings, friendship, love or family affection would naturally be affected. Therefore, no one needs to be too pessimistic -- although there are times in life that don't go your way, as time goes by the situation would eventually return to normal; so don't be discouraged by this. Although the difficult days are hard, we still need to persevere; when the good times come, you should know how to cherish and enjoy them more. Actually as long as you can spend today safely, you have already come out ahead. Keep a positive attitude, otherwise you will only be trapped in pain."
Speaking of Director Pang having to take care of his sick wife at that time, did he need financial assistance and did Brother Fai invest his salary on the movie? Brother Fai said that he did, but he really did not know about that when production started; the director never revealed anything to anyone, only said that he wanted to complete the film. He only found out later. "At first, he proposed to me his production intentions. I said that I had no special opinion, but instead asked him what specific requirements he had. Since I really liked the story, I had a pleasure working with him. I have worked with director Pang Fat on several films, and in my mind he is a director who keeps his promises. I remember when I worked on a movie with him before, my role was cut at the last minute due to scheduling problems. A few months later when he started filming another film, he personally said to me, 'You won't be without a role this time, you are the male lead.' I never mind what he says, because our collaborations have always been happy and smooth." Was this role tailor-made for Brother Fai? Brother Fai pointed out that Pang Fat only said that he has never tried this kind of role, so he asked him to try.
The Pang Fat Brother Fai knows would put a lot of things deep in his heart, but he thinks that Pang Fat may not be so depressed if he talks about them. He should enjoy every moment, try not to compare too much with others, and spend more time with his family instead of saying "I should've known" later. Brother Fai says that when he was young he was at work every day, and now he wants to have his own activities and arrange time to see his family. What is Brother Fai still pursuing at this stage? Brother Fai said, "My wife often says that I can strive to be better at work, but everyone has different ideas. I enjoy my work but don't go out of my way to fight for it. Enjoying myself every time I make a movie is already enough." How would he compete for awards? He laughed and said, "Should you clearly say that I won't work without an award? I have to work whether there is an award or not. The award is a type of an encouragement. It's not that I don't put pressure on myself, but I don't want to have too much pressure. It's enough to enjoy the filming process. It's equivalent to having a lot of money but you haven't spent it, and it's equivalent to you winning a lot of scenes but the shoots are neither pleasant nor fun! People have different thoughts and needs at different times. I didn't think so much when I was young, but after you get married you would want to make more money for fatting up the family, and after getting them fat you would want to see each other often." Brother Fai says that he hopes for good health and world peace the most. Sometimes he would feel very fortunate when he saw wars in many places and life was so difficult. "So I only ask for more family life. When the children grow up, I would have to take care of my wife. I don't have any big pursuits, just being safe and secure without big ups and downs!"
Brother Fai now lives a comfortable life, riding a bicycle for more than 30 kilometers alone every morning, then going home to take a bath and pick up his wife for work. After that he would go to the driving range to play golf for two hours, and then pick up his wife home for dinner, and enjoy fine wine and cigar. He imagined how he could be like an electric car, only need a fast charge to be able to replenish his energy. "Actually, I am so busy everyday but I feel so excited. Now is the time to enjoy life!"
