Jennifer Yu Heung Ying was invited to serve as one of the judges of the 8th Malaysia International Film Festival earlier, and Jennifer was deeply honored to serve as a judge of the film festival for the first time. However as a "rookie", she also felt a great responsibility but that it is more important to learn about the film culture of different countries and places from the judging process.
Jennifer said that she was the happiest about being able to gather and discuss with people who love movies from all over the world and meet many outstanding actors. She has benefited greatly from this trip, and even said that she watched 9 movies in one go before the finals. 8 of them were foreign language films. She said, "This time I saw different cultures from all over the world, and many of the things they want to express through films are from perspectives that I may not have been able to understand very well before. It is really eye-opening, and I really appreciate their production." Although she was a judge, Jennifer believed that she had a learning mentality; absorbing the "essence" of various places while judging and selecting awards.
Jennifer has competed for many awards as a competitor in the past, did she feel more relaxed as a judge this time? Jennifer said, "It absolutely won't be easy because the responsibility is huge, it is up to you to decide whether people get the award or not. This time the jury has many professionals, especially the chairman of the jury is an Oscar-level director who is leading us to select the award after many discussions. Although everyone will have different opinions in the process, but after discussion everyone will finally decide on the award. Actually it is not easy, it is intense. You have to choose very carefully, you must also analyze the meaning behind each film and the efforts behind each actor." Jennifer congratulated the winners and especially congratulated Big Brother Ti Lung for winning the Lifetime Achievement Award.
At the event, Jennifer revealed that one of the judges she admired the most was actor Reza Rahadian from Indonesia. "He has been in film for more than 20 years and very professional. In addition to being an actor, he has recently challenged to be a director. That is very amazing. I want to learn from him, so I can perform in a position other than an actor." Because she had to focus on work on this trip to Malaysia, she did not bring her children. She said, "Because judging requires a lot of focus, I spent the first two days in the room doing homework and working every day. So I didn't bring my children. However I stopped by to visit (Fish) Liew Chi Yu's Mommy, went to a night market with Hong Kong filmmakers and ate a little local food."
