Single-handedly creating the Shaw film kingdom and founding TVB, the media tycoon of a generation Sir Run Run Shaw (Siu Yat Fu) passed away at home at 6:55AM at age 106. Uncle Six spent his life creating a silver journey for countless actors. His life journey also reached its destination. His passing left film stars who grew up in the Shaw cradle mourning. Ivy Ling Bo said that Uncle Six's passing was a loss for Chinese film. Shaw actor Elliott Yueh (Ngok Wa) said that Shaw gave him all of his achievements. Although ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (DUK BEI DOH) Jimmy Wang Yu were in a ten year lawsuit against Shaw, he still hoped Uncle Six would rest in peace in Heaven. Michael Hui Koon Man said that Uncle Six approached the only 20 something him to play THE WARLORD (DAI GWUN FUT) and had great foresight.
Uncle Six made many film industry superstars and big directors including Linda Lin Dai, Ivy Ling Po, Betty Loh Ti, Lee Ching, Ti Lung, Gordon Liu (Lau Ka Fai), director Lee Han Hsiang, Chor Yuen, Chang Cheh and others, enabling the rise of the entire film kingdom. Uncle Six back then always had a female star by his side. He admired Lin Dai, Loh Ti and Ling Po the most. Cherie Chung Chor Hung also caught Uncle Six's eye. She thanked Shaw for giving her many performance opportunities. Mr. Shaw gave her the impression of a great man who was fully involved in charity and very socially responsible.
Michael Hui Koon Man became popular when he host HUI BROTHERS SHOW (SEUNG SING BO HEI). Siu Yat Fu called him to be THE WARLORD (DAI GWUN FUT) lead actor. It was Lee Han Hsiang's first film after returning to Hong Kong. Hui Koon Man said, "At the time I never thought about being an actor. I was in my 20s and handsome, but I had to play a 50 or 60 year old Warlord. I even had to shave my head. Uncle Six convinced me that my hair would grow up, but opportunity would not come again. Uncle Six had special foresight, willing to let a young man play a warlord. Without Uncle Six, I wouldn't be in the film industry."
Hui Koon Man in 1974 decided to become a director and went to Golden Harvest with his brother Sam Hui Koon Kit to make GAMES GAMBLERS PLAY (GWAI MA SEUNG SING). Back then he was rumored to have failed in bonus negotiation with Shaw and went to Golden Harvest. Hui Koon Man said, "I chose Golden Harvest because Hui Koon Kit was already signed to Golden Harvest. I never sold GAMES GAMBLERS PLAY to Uncle Six." He understood that Shaw was unwilling to pay even higher salary because it did not have its actors have too much difference in salary.
Elliot Yueh (Ngok Wa) was stunned to receive the news from Radio Hong Kong. He said, "It's quite a surprise, the last time I saw him he was in great spirit. He always lived a very orderly life and was already retired. I wouldn't have been surprised if he lived to age 110."
Ngok Wa and Uncle Six had over 50 years of employer employee relationship. Shaw was considered the one who discovered him. "Back then Shaw was making THE MONKEY GOES WEST (SAI YAU GEI) and had to cast actors. Sir Shaw was one of the decision makers. He had a hand in choosing me to play the lead and make my first movie. My life was spent on television and film, Shaw gave me all of my achievement!"
Ngok Wa praised Sir Shaw was wise and very smart. Back then he led Shaw into a legend. He recalled Sir Siu Yat Fu generously allowing actors to make extra money outside. "Everyone had golden opportunities to make money outside, although I violated a few Shaw rules he still very generously allowed me to make money outside. He was full of humanity. When Lee Han Hsiang left Shaw and later returned to the nest, Sir Shaw did not hold a grudge. Instead he gave him opportunities to work because he loved talent." Has he called Ms. Fong Yat Wa to offer his condolences? Ngok Wa said, "No, but I sent a text message to Wong Ka Hei to express my condolences, if there will be any memorial event definitely keep me in mind."
Cheng Pei Pei rose to fame for playing a heroine during the Shaw era. Her mood was heavy as she said that she just mentioned the happy days earlier when she paid Uncle Six a Lunar New Year visit at home. The most memorable was when Uncle Six praised her to be a on time actress and even rewarded her with a watch. Thus she still maintained the habit of being on time today. Cheng Pei Pei described Shaw as an actor Shaolin Temple that cultivated a lot of talent.
Famous Shaw actress Ivy Ling Po and her husband Chin Han yesterday received the news of Uncle Six's passing and were very shocked. They had many memories of Uncle Six from their movie days. Ling Po said, "The film kingdom that he created cultivated me. I am very reluctant. I am only here today because I made THE LOVE ETERNE (LEUNG SAN BAK YU JOOK YING TOI). His passing was a loss to Chinese film." Chin Han said that he has not seen Uncle Six in over a decade. He wanted to visit many times but deeply believed that Ms. Fong Yat Wa would take great care of him. Chin Han said, "I haven't contacted Ms. Fong yet. If there will be any memorial later, we definitely will go."
Ling Po praised Uncle Six for being focused on his work. Every morning he would be the first one on the set and every night the last to leave. After leaving the studio he still had to handle documents in the car. Chin Han joked that Uncle Six for his job could watch four or five "rotten films" in one day. Ling Po said, "When I first got into the business I made RED MAID, but Uncle Six felt that it was less than satisfactory and would rather burn it all than releasing the film randomly."
Kara Hui (Wai Ying Hung) joined Shaw in 1978, in 1982 with Shaw's MY YOUNG AUNTIE (JEUNG BUI) she won her the First Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress. She said, "Around 8AM I saw the news and learned that Uncle Six passed away, my heart was aching. In 78 I was still underage when I joined Shaw. Uncle Six was afraid that a little girl like me would be in danger and asked Wong Ka Hei to arrange for me to live in the Shaw dormitory. Uncle Six was very friend, unlike a boss. He would walk around the studio and chat with us. He knew that film productions were rough on me and I was injured, he would come to the studio to express his concerns, even told me work slowly and not to be in any hurry. Once he saw me crying and found out that my father had cancer. He gave me a Chinese herbal medicine prescription. The doctor originally said that my father only had three months, finally he lived for another 3 years. Uncle Six even said that if someone needed this prescription for me to pass it out. He hoped to help even more people."
ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (DUK BEI DOH) Jimmy Wang Yu recalled Shaw suing him for contract violation. They were in court for 10 years and finally settled. Shaw symbolically compensated over 10,000 to Wang. As for Uncle Six's passing, Wang Yu lightly said, "I wish him eternal peace in Heaven." Wang Yu disagreed that Shaw made him a superstar and even claimed that directors and writers made him famous. He was the one who made a lot of money for Shaw.
Tony Leung Ka Fai said that Uncle Six absolutely was the founder of Mandarin films, he brought Mandarin films into Hong Kong and built the first enduring film production studio. The Shaw kingdom made a lot of movies, cultivated many on and off scene talent. Hong Kong was known as Eastern Hollywood because of Shaw.
Leung Ka Fai said, "Although everyone was mentally prepared for Uncle Six's passing one day, it was still regrettable. The Shaw Film Studio is still here, I hope people who still work at Shaw would continue to expand the glory of Shaw."
Stephen Chow Sing Chi once served TVB. He praised Uncle Six for his gigantic contribution to the film industry, sparing no effort in his charity work. Mr. Shaw's spirit would endure forever.
Ti Lung in 1968 applied for the Shaw's Southern Nation Actor training class and made for Shaw's films like DEAD END (SEI GOK), VENGEANCE! (BO SAU), THE HEROIC ONES (SUP SAM TAI BO), THE NEW ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (SUN DUK BEI DOH), CLANS OF INTRIGUE (CHOR LAU HEUNG) and others.
Ti Lung said, "Back then I was in trouble with the law, Uncle Six wrote a letter to plead on my behalf. I escaped a strike and am thankful to him for a lifetime. Uncle Six always took me on vacation all over China and introduced Chinese culture to me. Uncle Six valued education very much, he donated a lot of money to Mainland schools and often said to me that a person had to have a tolerant heart."
John Chiang Dai Wai made many Shaw films. When he learned about Uncle Six's passing his heart ached. "I respect Uncle Six very much, my days of making movies at Shaw had a huge impact on my life."
Wong Jing once worked at Shaw and TVB for years. He said, "Uncle Six was the most successful film tycoon. His sensitivity to business was very high, his work fast, hard and accurate. He not only spoke Putonghua and Shanghainese, but also fluent English."
Siu Yat Fu (Uncle Six) was in charge from the film kingdom to the television station and in the midst of countless beauties. Film stars, television divas, Miss Hong Kongs all revolved around Uncle Six. Uncle Six was less than mobile late in his years. He did not use a cane, but whenever he attended large scale programs he had Miss Hong Kongs by his side. The honor to be Uncle Six's "human cane" was also a status symbol.
Earlier in the Shaw age, many rumors were about Uncle Six's romantic exploits. Uncle Six once personally explained them. "The more contact I have with stars, the more the outside imagines......" He admitted that he dated female stars then. They went out, dined, danced but those were the limits. As for being called a playboy, he said, "I am romantic but not dirty! I like to be romantic but never dirty!" Uncle Six's "romantic theory" was one of the most classic comments.
Uncle Six aside from appearing hand in hand with his wife Mona Fong Yat Wa in recent years have appeared with Shirley Cheung Yuk Shan, Jojo Cho Chung and others who were in tow and took care of him. Every year at the TVB anniversary lighting ceremony, Uncle Six would also go on stage with the current Miss Hong Kong. This move gradually became another of Uncle Six's symbols!
Uncle Six had quite a way with the ladies, with a little humor and attentiveness. At the 39th TVB anniversary lighting ceremony, he jokingly asked the 2006 Miss Hong Kong Aimee Chan Yan Mei if she accompanied him to the stage last year? He seemed to miss the 2005 Miss Hong Kong Tracy Ip Chui Chui. Actually Uncle Six just saw Ip Chui Chui in August. On the night of the Miss Hong Kong pageant finals, when he saw her appeared in a strap evening gown, Uncle Six once grabbed her arms to provide her warmth. At the same time he also praised the first runner up Sharon Luk Sze Wan's skin as very white, which made her happy. "Ah Sir is really humorous, I hope his compliment is a good omen."
Every year Miss Hong Kong would hold Uncle Six's hand. Shirley Yeung Szeki, Kate Tsui Tsz Shan, Mandy Lee Cho and other beauties were no exception, but the ones who dared to be more intimate with Uncle Six and not afraid of crossing Fong Yat Wa had to be Liza Wong Ming Chuen and Carol Cheng Yui Ling. The two TVB master class elders could be cheek to cheek with Uncle Six under all the eyes. Ah Jeh Wang Ming Chuen even kissed him on his lips without being afraid of any misunderstanding.
2011 Miss Hong Kong Rebecca Zhu (Chu Sun Lai) was the last Miss Hong Kong that Uncle Six personally crowned and attended the TVB anniversary with. Yesterday she eulogized Uncle Six online. "In 2011 I was honored to receive this honor from your hands, thank you for guiding my life to another launch. You fulfilled tens of thousands of wishes from dreamers, you explored tens of thousands of miracles in the film world! Miss you always Sir Siu Yat Fu, have a safe journey!"
Other Miss Hong Kongs also left messages of eulogy. 2003 Miss Hong Kong Mandy Lee Cho said, "I still remember on the 2004 TVB Lunar New Year program, Uncle Six held my hand and said, 'Are you very cold?' Uncle Six's hands were warmer than mine, an elder who cared very much about his juniors."
TVB yesterday held the Miss Chinese International pageant press conference at the Television City. Out of respect for Siu Yat Fu's passing, the current crop of Miss Hong Kongs Grace Chan Hoi Lam, Sisley Choi Sze Bui, Moon Lau Pui Yuet, Tammy Ouyang Hau Ying and the previous Miss Chinese International Gloria Tang Pui Yee attended the press conference in mourning colors and the toast was cancelled.
Miss Hong Kong Chan Hoi Lam has never met Uncle Six, which she regretted. She said, "When I majored in communication, I had to write an essay on old style films and did research. Siu Yat Fu made great contributions to the film and television industries. Everyone respect him very much." Tang Pui Yee said that she has never made Sir Siu Yat Fu either, but knew that he was the TVB founder.
TVB was the Hong Kong television industry dragon head. Siu Yat Fu (Uncle Six) has always been in charge until age 104. On December 31 2011 he officially retired from the post of CEO. TVB under Uncle Six's 44 years old leadership often reached new television heights, made television series and variety programs that provided entertainment programs and known all over, even countless superstars and behind the scene elites and created a Hong Kong entertainment legend.
ENJOY YOURSELF TONIGHT was TVB's first variety program that developed into an enduring program that many Hong Kong people grew up with and even cultivated many host talent. TVB's large scale variety programs like the first Miss Hong Kong pageant in 1973 and the first New Talent singing contest in 1982 all discovered artist with a variety of talents for Hong Kong. It also had giant fund raising programs for Tung Wah, Po Leung Kuk and other charitable organizations and helped spread the message of helping others.
Liza Wang Ming Cheun respected Uncle Six very much, he was very spiritual leader of show business. He made great contribution to Hong Kong, created the Eastern Hollywood, and had great success with film and television. He also had a very charitable heart, did a lot of good deeds and helped those in need. He built many schools and hospitals in the Mainland and was very generous. She had little personal contact with Uncle Six, the most memorable was around the Hand Over when she and Uncle Six were in many of the same meetings. Once she asked him about his secrets to longevity. Uncle Six taught her three simple Qi Gong tricks and told me to slowly practice to experience them. They would be truly effective. Every year Uncle Six's appearance on the TVB anniversary was a symbol. He really very friendly and took great care of me. One years because many co-workers were not around, Uncle Six looked at me and said, "Only we and Madame Lee are left, the three of us have been working here the longest."
Carol Cheng Yui Ling said that Uncle Six was a legend. Shaw films also gave her a lot of childhood memories. She was very thankful that TVB signed her back. Back then Uncle Six gave her the impression of a very hard working boss, went to work early and did not act like a big shot. He always had a smile, really liked cheery atmosphere and looking at pretty things. Thus he would definitely watch Miss Hong Kong. She usually saw Uncle Six at the TVB anniversary, the most memorable time was when he said to her with a smile, "You are very thin!" 10 years ago the Sir Run Run Shaw Prize came about, she was assigned to interview Uncle Six on the 9th floor office. Uncle Six had a lot of his own ideas, and did not like to say what others told him to say. However he did not talk much either. Finally Ms. Fong did it for him. A few years ago Uncle Six attended the TVB anniversary. Everyone saw several steps and wanted to hold on to him tightly, but he would push them away and decline any helping hand.
Chow Yun Fat thanked Uncle Six for cultivating so many people for TVB. Honestly, without TVB he would not be here. Uncle Six was very hard working, everyday he would return to the company for meetings and he took great care of the younger generations. He said, "once Uncle Six and I attended a film festival together overseas. He actually took the initiative to come over and chat with me. He was very friendly, very nice, I wish Uncle Six a safe journey. He passed away in his sleep, which was fortunate. I send my condolences to Aunt Six Fong Yat Wa!"
Ng Yu was the mastermind behind TVB variety shows. He recalled Siu Yat Fu. "Ah Sir never interfered with creativity and let producers work freely. He would make suggestions, when he suggested to buy JUSTICE BAO he felt it was a good series. Although he was occupied with a myriad of company affairs, everyday he would take time to watch film and television programs from around the world. He paid a lot of attention to film and television, and it was his interest. He also gave his entire life to this industry, which was very rare."
Hai Sau Lan was an early member of ENJOY YOURSELF TONIGHT. She said that due to her height, Uncle Six once asked her if she would like to act as she could play don a disguise and play a male role. At the time her family objected so she turned him down. Later when she decided to wed, Uncle Six gave her three tips. He said that she was a woman who had to go home, from now on she could work toward a career in finance, interior design and travel industry. In the end she went into business with her husband, but she still was very appreciative of Uncle Six's advice.
When Meg Lam Kin Ming first joined TVB she had contacts with Uncle Six. Once he invited artists to dinner at Shaw. She asked Uncle Six about bird's nest. She heard that he constantly had it and asked what benefit did it have? He answered that he did not always have bird's nest. It was not a special nourishment and only good for digestion. He even humorously said that bird's nest had no flavor so he had no idea why it was so expensive. Everyone knew that healthy living was important to Uncle Six, from his comment about bird's nest she had a new understanding about it. After working for TVB for ten years, she received her ten year service gold medal from Uncle Six. The gold medal was still around. Earlier when gold prices went up she sold a pile of gold, but she was unwilling to part with the gold medal due to its sentimental value. She has always been envious of Uncle Six's figure. He was very healthy so he lived until age 107. Although his passing was very regrettable, he was fortunate not to suffer any major pain, life, aging, illness and death were inevitable. "I miss Uncle Six, having worked with me was my honor and joy."
Gigi Chiu Nga Chi's impression of Sir Shaw was very hard working. She said that he was a good boss and did everything personally. He treated everyone the same and was very friendly. Sir Shaw once advised her that aside from work sh had to pay attention to health. He also recommended Qi Gong to everyone for their health. He was a Hong Kong film and television giant. His passing was a tremendous loss for Hong Kong. She would always remember this legendary figure of a generation.
Andy Lau Tak Wa who started as one of TVB's Five Tigers said about Uncle Six's passing, "I will always remember you, have a safe journey." Another one of the Five Tigers Felix Wong Yat Wa eulogized Uncle Six online. "R.I.P. forever remember the giant of a generation, philanthropist -- Sir Shaw, Mr. Siu Yat Fu!"
TVB has produced many classic television series. The first TVB television artist training class in 1972 included graduates like Kam Kwok Leung, Chiu Chun Keung, Chong Man Ching and Hui Siu Hung. Chow Yun Fat was the third training class graduate. Johnnie To Kei Fung was from the fourth. After that came "Five Tigers" Lau Tak Wa, Michael Miu Kiu Wai, Wong Yat Wa, Tong Chun Yip and Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Stephen Chow Sing Chi, Francis Ng Chun Yu, Sean Lau Ching Wan, Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Carina Lau Ka Ling and others. They all came from TVB training classes. As for classic TVB series, they included THE BUND (SEUNG HOI TAN), THE BROTHERS (CHUN CHING), THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY (MONG JUNG YUN), POLICE CADETS (SUN JAT SI HING) series, a series of Louis Cha (Gum Yung) novel adaptations, THE FINAL VERDICT (SAI BUT DAI TAU), LOOKING BACK IN ANGER (YI BUT YUNG CHING), THE JUSTICE OF LIFE (TA LOI JI GONG WU) and others. In recent years HEART OF GREED (TONG SUM FUNG BO) and the ROSY BUSINESS (GUN GOK HIU HUNG) series all led to television peaks.
Nadia Chan Chung Ling was Uncle Six's favorite. She was invited to dine and watch movies at Uncle Six's home. Chung Chung last night eulogized Uncle Six online. "Although I have already been prepared for over a decade, I still dreaded the coming of this day. Uncle Six was 107. He truly passed away, I am very upset inside because his existence represented hope. In the past the Clearwater Bay Television City, Shaw Film Studio and Uncle Six's mansion were all on the same hill. To me this was the most beautiful era......Uncle Six, you are really gone. In the past you gave us opportunities to become stars, you were the most most most brilliant star."
Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung said that Uncle Six made enormous contributions to the film and television industries. At company events he shook Uncle Six's hand and greeted him. He was a very kind elder. Life, aging, illness and death were inevitable, the most important was Uncle Six passed away peacefully.
Although Wu Fung did not have too many opportunities to chat with uncle Six, his contributions to the Chinese community was admirable because he provided Chinese communities with a lot of entertainment. Uncle Six was a very smart boss who was able to make TVB into what it is now.
Nancy Sit Ka Yin said that Uncle Six built a television and film kingdom and was very passionate about work. At age 80 and 90 he still went to work everyday to listen to employee reports about work. He spared no effort in his charity work, he was kind, gentle and loyal. When she first came back and participated in her first TVB anniversary, Uncle Six drew her to win the HK$1 million grand prize. She was very happy and Uncle Six said that she was very lucky.
Michelle Yim (Mai Shuet) has known him since she got into the business. At the time she was in the first training class that Shaw and TVB co-organized. He was very easy going and chatted with them. He was a very talented person and could be described as great. When she heard the news she was shocked. She just saw him at the company two years ago, at the time he was still very smart and very alert. Of course she felt upset. Back then they would see each other more at Shaw, Ah Sir liked to watch movies and took great care of actors. He was constantly concerned with how their shoots were going. The last time she saw him was at the TVB anniversary two years ago.
Mak Cheung Ching's contacts with Ah Sir have all been on large scale shows. He ultimately was Mak Cheung Ching's first boss, hearing the news he was somewhat upset and felt regrettable. He gave a living to many Hong Kong people, as he started the television industry. When he came in contact with him at big shows, he felt that he was a kind elder and a good boss. He did not know what kind of memorial ceremony the company will have later. If there will be any he will attend. Even if he will not be able to he will still thank him in his heart.
Helena Law Lan said that although he was elderly, hearing the news was still upsetting. However he passed away at home very peacefully and did not suffer. Sir Shaw's contributions to the film and television industries were enormous. Once at the studio screening room many guests attended, Sir Siu still chatted with her; when she worked at the Clearwater Bay studio she ran into Sir Shaw. He said that he came back for a meeting and said that work was good and he had to work. Every time she saw him he was always smiling. She sent her condolences to Sir Shaw's family.
Grace Wong Kwan Hing said that after she competed in the Miss Hong Kong pageant, on his 100th birthday and before the TVB Anniversary she sat next to him at dinner. He joked with her and said that her finger nails were so long. Then he made a gesture and asked if she used them against my boyfriend. She answered No, No, No, then she saw Ms. Fong cutting up his food for him. Although he spoke very softly, he had a great smile in his eyes and made people feel very comfortable and warm.
Chen Chen has known Siu Yat Fu for 45 years. Yesterday when she received the news she felt it was regrettable. She called Siu Yat Fu Mr. Siu, but they have never worked together on film because she belonged to Grand Motion Pictures back then. She said, "I have never worked on any Shaw film, but he always greeted me like a child, a great benefactor who loved and cared for me." Chen Chen said that Mr. Siu was the hand that led Chinese films to the world. Aside from a film industry tycoon, he was also generous with charity. He might not be the richest, but he was the greatest philanthropist. His longevity was a gift from Heaven.
Chen Chen was a good friend of Siu Yat Fu and Fong Yat Wa. Chen Chen said that they were a loving couple. Fong Yat Wa after Siu Yat Fu's illness has been taking great care of him. Every night she must first put him to bed first. Fong Yat Wa would turn down invitations to spend the holidays or to vacations in order to take care of him. She did not want to leave his side. She also said that Mr. Siu did not enjoy celebrating his birthday. His family and friends would just get together and have a simple meal with him.
Speaking of Uncle Six, Chen Chen said that he was very friendly to everyone. Even if his position was higher, he would not be beyond reach. When you dined with him you would experience how friendly he was. She said, "Siu Yat Fu treated people kindly and with understanding. He was learned and respected. He had a sense of humor, his presence and the way he carried himself were like those of an English gentleman." She also said that Uncle Six performed too many good deeds and thus lived a very long life. He donated all of his wealth to charity, affected and helped many people. Hopefully the future generations would treat him as a role model.
Chen Chen's son Jeremy Liu saw Uncle Six as an idol. Chen Chen said that Mr. Siu when Jeremy was little loved to play with him. Because Jeremy was born on the Year of the Tiger, he draw a great tiger for Mr. Siu and received compliments. Liu Chia-Chang was in Hong Kong and replied through his assistant that he was very down. Hopefully he would be able to speak when he would pay his respect.
Sir Siu Yat Fu's life lasted over a century. The secret to his longevity has always been a topic. Uncle Six's life was orderly. For decades he practiced Qi Gong and meditation everyday. With his always smiling attitude, no alcohol or gambling, they were Uncle Six's secret to a long life.
Reportedly Uncle Six's exercises included speed walking and Tai Chi. In the afternoon he would nap for a hour, and his diet was light. Delicacies like abalone, ginseng, shark fin and belly were not his favorite. Vegetable, fish and rice provided ample nutrients. In the past Uncle Six kept a thin slice of ginseng in his mouth everyday. Uncle Six's ginseng was even the absolute best natural ginseng, he spent a hundred thousand on ginseng. His habit was to chew ginseng like chewing gum. He revealed that he would at least use 4 catties of ginseng a year. At the time one catty of ginseng cost HK$20,000 to 30,000. However after practicing Qi Gong, Uncle Six quit using ginseng because they clashed with each other. Speaking of his secret to longevity, Uncle Six once revealed to a friend that being with young girls was also important to remain vital; he did not mean it in a dirty way, only that being with young people their youth could be infectious. Opposite sexes attract so the effectiveness would be doubled.
Later Uncle Six began to study Qi Gong, which became his main way to stay alive. Reportedly Uncle Six got up at 5AM every morning, practiced Qi Gong and walked for 2 hours, then went to work. Everyday he stayed the course and never deviated from it. he would even practice Tai Chi, swim and other exercises. He also due to Qi Gong had better sleep quality. Everyday he only needed to sleep for 6 hours to be completely refreshed. Uncle Six once visited a Qi Gong Master in the Mainland to study.
Rumors about Uncle Six practicing Qi Gong has always become mythical. He was rumored to be able to sit cross-legged 4 to 5 inches above ground like a guru. A real witness of Uncle Six's Qi Gong was the late James Wong Jim. Uncle Six personally demonstrated starting the heat generator inside his body through meditation; he meditated for 3 minutes and was engulfed in heat as his entire body was "radiating heat"! Uncle Six said that he learned meditation from a Taiwan master named Wang. He practiced everyday, when he meditated he had only other thought. Uncle Six was already 73 when he did Wong Jim's interview, he was able to walk like he was flying. Uncle Jim later described that Uncle Six was also very powerful with his six straight kicks, without his face turning red and being out of breath.
In another story Uncle Six visited Huangshan. Friends worried that he would not have enough strength to reach the mountain and prepared for a sedan that could carry Uncle Six as needed; no one expected when Uncle Six reached the mountain, the 4 young sedan carriers were still catching their breaths in the middle. Thus Uncle Six's "ability" truly made young people sweat.
Aside from Qi Gong, staying calm was also Uncle Six's secret to longevity. Uncle Six claimed that he had three methods to longevity: work hard, always smile and practice Qi Gong everyday. Uncle Six pointed out that drinking, gambling and other stimulation would affect health, and he had to remain happy. Thus every time Uncle Six appeared, his expressions were peaceful and smiling. Also interesting was when TVB's general manager post was empty, he had a two headed horse in assistant general managers Ho Ting Kwun and Ho Shun Yun. When Uncle Six returned to the company for a meeting reporters asked about the general manager choice, he smiled and said, "Whoever has the time!" Finally Ho Shun Yun became the general manager.
Uncle and Aunt Six both had a tea habit. When Uncle Six was in better health, Aunt Six would accompany him to the Peninsula Hotel Coffee shop and the Landmark star cafe for tea. Uncle Six loved desserts. After sitting for awhile he would shop and go home; however in recent years only Aunt Six had coffee with her sister. Because she was worried that Uncle Six would catch a cold, she rarely let him go out. From now on Aunt Six could only reminisce the days of enjoying tea with Uncle Six at the tea shop.
Once described as Uncle Six's favorite, Jojo Cho Chung was heartbroken to hear about Uncle Six's passing. She revealed Sir Siu Yat Fu in her heart was a kind and great man. She said, "Uncle Six had a magnifying glass on his office desk. Although he was old, he constantly received many letters for charity donations. He would read each once in detail, then decide on the amount to donate. Many would not personally perform such a task, but he would very attentively read about the person or the organization in need. From him I really learned to work seriously. His contributions to the community and the nation has spread to different places and left many marks that are worthy of us to remember." She recalled that two years ago Sir Shaw and Ms. Fong personally visited her and her daughter. Last year she visited Uncle Six. At the time he was still very alert but needed more rest. Thus she only greeted Uncle Six and did not chat for too long. Speaking of Uncle Six's secret to longevity, Cho Chung revealed that Uncle Six was very willing to share the way of Qi Gong with everyone. She was fortunate enough to be taught and is still practicing now. She even remembered that Uncle Six often told everyone, "If you feel sick go to the doctor quickly, then you can be treated." She would always remember that advice.
Last year Lau Kar Leung passed away. Mary Jean Reimer (Yung Jing Jing) at her husband's funeral publicly asked Sir Run Run Shaw for his film bonus from 30 years ago and claimed that he has not fulfilled the contractual promise. Later Yung Jing Jing personally called Yung Jing Jing but has not had any progress. Now Siu Yat Fu has passed away, Yung Jing Jing is in Europe. She only responded to the news of Uncle Six's passing, "R.I.P." However when someone online told her about Siu Yat Fu's passing on facebook, Yung Jing Jing replied, "The only witness who can uphold justice has passed away."
