In the film THE MONKEY KING (SAI YAU GEI ji DAI LAU TIN GUNG) Kelly Chen Wai Lam played the Goddess of Mercy. Although the role was not enormous, Kelly was fully prepared before the shoot as she asked her husband to analyze her performance methods; she even went on a vegetarian diet for three days before the shoot. Kelly said that her first impression of the goddess that helping those in need. She said that the goddess was holy and kind. To show her respect, before the shoot she stopped eating meat.
She only had two scenes but she asked for her teacher to accompany her to Beijing to assist with the production, down to even gestures and speech tones. Kelly taught her sons like the Goddess of Mercy as well. She said that children should not be yelled at. When they made mistakes they have to be explained to slowly, she had to control her own emotional quotient; luckily her sons learned and when necessary the father would discipline them as the "bad guy".
