The film and television giant of a generation Sir Run Run Shaw (Siu Yat Fu)'s funeral took place today. His coffin was immediately transported to the Cape Collinson Crematorium for cremation. Having accompanied Uncle Six for over half a century, Aunt Six Mona Fong Yat Wa was upset about losing her beloved. However no matter how much sorrow she had inside, she still insisted on doing everything well for Uncle Six's final journey. The 79 year old Aunt Six yesterday morning went to the United Hospital to personally pick up Uncle Six's body, which was transported in a hearse to the Hong Kong Funeral Home. The entire first floor was booked for Uncle Six's service. Because she was too heartbroken she avoided the media in a low key manner. Uncle Six's sons Shaw Wai Ming and Shaw Wai Chung as well as several dozen family members and friends attended. Jojo Cho Chung, almost a god daughter to Uncle Six, and his good friend Chen Chen came to bid him farewell. Cho Chung cried so hard that both her eyes were red and swollen.
The 106 year old Sir Run Run Shaw passed away Tuesday morning at home. The funeral rapidly took place this morning and the body was transported to the Cape Collinson Crematorium. Due to the private ceremony, yesterday several dozen family members and friends attended. Many also returned from overseas to attend. His sons Shaw Wai Ming and Shaw Wai Chung arrived in the afternoon. Shaw Wai Chung needed assistance from family and friends. They did not leave until around 8PM. The older son and some of the family and friends left with a smile, ultimately with the age of 106 the funeral was considered a smiling event.
Uncle Six was passionate about charity in life, but his life was rather low key. Having spent over 50 years with Uncle Six, Aunt Six Fong Yat Wa also followed his wishes and kept the affair low key and private. Although Aunt Six was very heartbroken, she still insisted on personally taking care the event for her husband. Reportedly the family paid their respect at the altar, with high ranking monks chanting for Uncle Six. Aunt Six chose a Western style coffin for Uncle Six. It was worth around HK$500,000.
Aunt Six deliberately remained low key and avoided the media coverage, thus yesterday around 8AM she took a small sedan to the hospital and even chose to park far away. Then she walked into the morgue to personally pick up Uncle Six's body. However the reporters still found her. She looked down as she lowered her head in sorrow and entered the morgue to retrieve Uncle Six's body. Later she covered Uncle Six with a white cloth, as the crew carried him into a green hearse. However Aunt Six did not ride in the hearse. She still took the small sedan and tightly followed the hearse, but she then returned home to pick up funerary objects. Around 3PM Shaw executive Wong Ka Hei accompanied her to the Hong Kong Funeral Home. The car drove directly into the funeral home backdoor and the gates were lowered. In the same manner around 8PM when the family left, Wong Ka Hei still drove Aunt Six and her sister. Aunt Six seemed to be slid down, thoroughly low key to avoid the media.
Aunt Six booked the entire first floor hall and sealed it to keep people out and avoid Uncle Six's mortal remains to be exposed. Although it was a family only private ceremony, TVB chair Norman Leung Nai Peng, Uncle Six's almost god daughter Cho Chung and friend Chen Chen all attended. Leung Nai Peng said, "Ah Sir is having services done up there. The Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Zhang Xiaoming, represented national leaders in messages of condolences to Uncle Six's family. As for the funeral ceremony I hope everyone in the media will cooperate to represent everyone's respect for him, so Uncle Six can have a perfect journey."
How was Uncle Six? Leung Nai Peng said, "Ms. Fong is already a little calmer. With many friends keeping her company she would be a little better. Around several dozen people including Uncle Six's sons and nephews were on hand, but due to the funeral's private nature it won't be publicized." As for TVB's memorial event on the 16th, Leung Nai Peng said that it will not be a memorial event. It will just be a salute to Ah Sir in a suitable venue. The format will be more relaxed, but an announcement will be made after the funeral completion and the event confirmation.
Cho Chung who was almost a god daughter to Uncle Six arrived around 5PM in mourning clothes and left with family and friends. Her eyes were swollen and nose red from crying, but she declined any interview. She only said to reporters, "Thank you for your troubles, please make room for me to walk!"
Although Uncle Six has been in show business for half a century, some pointed out that he actually had a wish of building an entertainment city that has not been fulfilled yet. Due to concerns that the ground breaking would affect his health, construction was officially halted two years ago. Now it might have to wait for his widow Aunt Six to fulfill his dream.
Coming from TVB, Louis Koo Tin Lok might have switched to film years ago but still could not forget his former boss Uncle Six. He sang his praised online. "Yesterday morning I received the news that Mr. Siu Yat Fu peacefully passed away at home at the age of 106. No more needed to be said about how great this film industry giant's influence has been. In addition over the years he donated tens of billions to build many educational and medical facilities in both China and Hong Kong. He even established the Shaw Prize to promote advancements in math, life science and medicine and astronomy around the world. He truly was great, well worth a salute from us. Uncle Six, have a safe journey."
