Hong Kong films raised their collective heads during the Lunar New Year and no longer yielded to foreign films and animations! Hong Kong Box Office's 2014 New Spring slot (Lunar New Year's Eve January 30 to the Lunar 3rd February 2) four day box office showed that Hong Kong film consumer market was thriving. With similar ticket prices to last year's, Chinese and foreign total box office was around HK$51,140,730. In comparison to HK$44,253,499 in the same period last year, the increase was around 15.6%. GOLDEN CHICKEN SSS (GUM GAI SSS) was on top of the box office with HK$14,037,543.

8 films were released during the Lunar New Year, with 4 Hong Kong films in the top 4 spots. GOLDEN CHICKEN SSS performed the best with HK$14,037,543 over four days, better than last year's winner A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD and its HK$12,040,951. In second place FROM VEGAS TO MACAU (DOH SING FUNG WON) made H$K11,539,366, holding back the HK$11,392,701 MONKEY KING (SAI YAU GEI ji DAI LAU TIN GUNG). In fourth place HELLO BABIES (LUK FUK HEI SI) made HK$7,059,864. As of February 3, GOLDEN CHICKEN SSS, FROM VEGAS TO MACAU, THE MONKEY KING and HELLO BABIES' cumulative box office were respectively HK$20,794,755, 19,356,403, 15,320,546, 10,980,175.

The foreign films JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT and SAVING MR. BANKS made 2,472,794 and 1,482,473. The animated films MEET THE PEGASUS and JUSTIN AND THE KNIGHTS OF THE VALOR performed the worst with 622,743 and 544,502 respectively.

GOLDEN CHICKEN SSS producer and lead actress Sandra Ng Kwan Yu said about the good box office performance, "This year every one of the Lunar New Year film performed well, I truly am very surprised. FROM VEGAS TO MACAU director Wong Jing announced online that the film exceeded 100 million yuan at the Mainland box office while it headed toward HK$20 million in Hong Kong. He gave special thanks to Fat Gor (Chow Yun Fat), Ting Fung (Nicholas Tse), Ah Jat (Chapman To) and (Andrew) Lau Wai Keung for their contribution, stated that they will continue to work hard and swore to past HK$30 million in Hong Kong and 250 to 300 million yuan in the Mainland. He also hinted at the reason that the film lost to GOLDEN CHICKEN SSS, Wong Jing said, "GOLDEN CHICKEN has the full support of the Edko cinema circuit. Everyday it has 50 more shows than I do and they are all large cinemas. Beating it would be impossible."
