The Juno Mak Chun Lung directed SONS OF THE NEON NIGHT (FUNG LUM FOR SHAN) was released for 3 weeks, and its box office in Hong Kong and Macau has exceeded HK$ 12.4 million. According to the Maoyan box office chart, the film has collected more than 90 million yuan in the mainland. SONS OF THE NEON NIGHT has had mixed reviews, as what the audience liked and disliked has caused controversy. Earlier director Teddy Chan Tak Sum praised SONS OF THE NEON NIGHT on social platforms. The film's producer Catherine Hun Ka Chun recently forwarded Chan Tak Sum's post on Weibo, and thanked him for his appreciation and support. Hun Ka Chun clarified the rumor related to SONS OF THE NEON NIGHT's 6 hour version and revealed the possibility of the film being developed into a mini video series.
Director Chan Tak Sum last week publicly praised SONS OF THE NEON NIGHT as a movie he really liked. Even though he mentioned its flaw "the script lacks details and clarity", but from the camera angles, shot, visual designs, costume designs and others he saw all the effort that went into the film. He also advised Mak Chun Lung, "If Juno hasn't been knocked out by the box office this time, in the future he would definitely become another master in the Hong Kong film industry!" In the end he summed up the film, "This film is regrettable! I want to see his six hour version because I want to see Mak Chun Lung's even more fantastic creativity!"
Producer Hun thanked Chan Tak Sum for his appreciation last night, but at the same time also clarified that SONS OF THE NEON NIGHT has no 6 hour version as rumored. "Actually SONS OF THE NEON NIGHT doesn't have a version as long as the rumored six hours. Six hours ......may be the length of the film before editing, which led to the rumor to endure until now. The complete 1st cut I saw was 4 hours, which was very rich."
The current release version is over 2 hours, in other words it has 2 more hours of content everyone has yet to enjoy and unable to completely experience the world that Mak Chun Lung wanted to express in this film. Producer Hun Ka Chun also admitted, a platform once suggested for them to re-produce the currently cut material into a 5 to 8 episode mini series, but this suggestion would have certain difficulties in execution. "Because the film was shot over so many years ago, the subject has been affected by time more or less. In addition the procedure and the production problems involved like special effects, actors, budgets, scheduling...are more complicated. Currently we are still in the stages of discussing the possibilities ......I hope in the not too distant future to be able to give an answer to you and viewers who like this movie."
