Known as "Benz Hung", famous artist Hui Siu Hung was suddenly
reported as critically ill and admitted to the ICU yesterday afternoon;
his condition was unknown. Many friends after visiting the hospital
kept their silence. As his goddaughter, Charmaine Sheh Sze Man hurried
back to Hong Kong to visit after attending the event in Macau. She was
even more tearful in the interview, while Raymond Lam Fung and Ron Ng
Cheuk Hei hoped that he would make great strides.
Veteran actor Hui Siu Hung, who would celebrate his 77th
birthday on the 4th of next month, has been in the industry for more
than 50 years. He has participated in many classic works including THE
GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY and THE FINAL COMBAT. Cheerful and positive,
he has quite a connection with people in the business. Semi-retired on
recent years, he has settled in Singapore with his family. While
living a carefree life he often guest starred for the joy of acting.
He even teamed up with his daughter Hui Wai Ching to shared everyday life
videos. In the recent Mid Autumn Festival he even had dinner with Law
Lok Lam and Chan Bo Yee to celebrate the holiday and at the time he was
in decent shape. Last week, he teamed with his daughter to play video
games. Yet yesterday afternoon the sudden news of his critical illness
came, shocking the entire entertainment industry as many friends visited
after catching wind of it.
Artists who have a personal relationship with Hui Siu Hung,
including Raymond Lam Fung, Ron Ng Cheuk Hei, Bosco Wong Chung Chak,
Bobby Auyeung Chun Wah, Roger Kwok Chun On, Priscilla Wong Chui Yu and
her husband, Sharon Chan Man Chi, Benjamin Yuen Wai Ho, Mak Cheung
Ching, etc., have appeared at the Sanatorium and Hospital since
yesterday afternoon, attracting a large number of media coverage.
Everyone was quiet about Hui Siu Hung's condition and looked solemn.
Working with Hui Siu Hung on the dramas YOU'RE HIRED, LINE WALKER,
THE HEIR TO THE THRONE, THEMIS, etc., Sheh Sze Man's relationship with
him is like father and daughter and they are already godfather and
goddaughter, but Ah Sheh had to appear in Macau yesterday to attend the
event because she had already taken the job. During the interview she
got teary eyed, tried to hold the tears back as she turned away to wipe
them.
Ah Sheh said frankly, "Actually I have always known about it,
because I am dealing with this matter. I went to visit him, and he is
fighting hard. (What's wrong with him?) I will save this for his
family to say. (When you worked on the drama THEMIS a month ago, what
was his physical condition?) OK, he still had a lot of dialogue and
he was able to memorize them all. (When did you know he was ill?) I
will save this for his family to say. I was going to fly to Beijing,
but now I decided to go back to Hong Kong and go to the hospital
first." At nearly 7 p.m., Ah Sheh finally arrived at the hospital and
rushed in without saying a word.
Raymond Lam Fung and Ron Ng Cheuk Hei left together after
staying in the hospital for about half an hour. Lam Fung put his hands
together to the reporter waiting outside the door and did not respond
much, while Ng Cheuk Hei after boarding his vehicle gave two thumbs up
and screamed, "God Bless". Fung So Bo revealed, "He is wearing an
oxygen mask. (What did you tell him?) He heard me talking." When
Emily Kwan Bo Wai appeared to visit the patient, she said, "I have known
Hui Siu Hung for more than 30 years. The last time I saw him was more
than a year ago, and I don't know his current physical condition; so I
have to come to visit him."
When Joyce Tung Lai Ming attended the event yesterday afternoon,
she said, "I was so nervous when I heard the news (Hui Siu Hung's
critical illness) that I got goosebumps. I am very worried about him.
He is a great senior with a playful personality and generosity, and he
takes good care of his juniors. I don't know what's wrong with him, I
usually see him very cheerful and healthy. I have never seen him drink,
and he often exercises with her daughter." However, as early as June,
Hui Siu Hung and his daughter returned to their ancestral home "Hui
Land" in Guangzhou for photos. Some online noticed that he was
panting when walking on the flat road, and they were very worried about
his health.
"Benz Hung" Hui Siu Hung shocked the entertainment circle with
the news of his critical illness. Hui Siu Hung was born into a
prominent family that was known as the "first family in modern
Guangzhou" in the mainland. His ancestor was the top of Guangzhou's
Four Great Salt Merchants Hui Bai Ting. His great grandfather Hui Ying
Kwai was a top grade official and an important minister of Empress
Dowager Cixi; great uncle Hui Sung Chi was a Kuomintang veteran, Sun
Yat-sen's confidant, and founded the Whampoa Military Academy with
Chiang Kai-shek and others. The best known was his great aunt Hui Kwong
Ping, the companion of modern Chinese writer Lu Xun. His childhood toys
were all sachets, jade ruyi, etc., which showed that the family had a
deep heritage.
Hui Siu Hung settled in Hong Kong with his family in 1958. In
1971 he applied for the TVB Artist Training Class and became a student
of the first TVB's artist training class. Early in his career because
he often drove a Mercedes Benz to work, he was known as "Benz Hung".
Hui Siu Hung and his Singaporean wife Long Yan got married in 1992, and
5 years after marriage his wife gave birth to his beloved daughter Hui
Wai Ching at the age of 49, and Long Yan had a son previously. Hui Siu
Hung treated his step son like his own and had a close relationship.
Hui Siu Hung has been in the industry for many years and has
made many movies and TV series, and his roles have ben deeply rooted in
the hearts of the people and are talked about. In the movie RUNNING OUT
OF THE TIME (UM JIN), he played the law enforcement officer "Wong Kai
Fat", in which he shouted to the bandits through a loudspeaker: "I am
Wong Kai Fat, Chief Inspector of the Serious Crime Unit. You are
already surrounded, you have three minutes to surrender!" This classic
dialogue is still remembered by fans to this day, and Hui Siu Hung was
nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 19th Hong Kong Film
Awards in 2000, becoming the only Hong Kong Film Awards nomination in
his acting career.
Secondly, in the movie LOVE UNDERCOVER (SUN JAT SI MUI) with
Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), he played the role of
"Fong Chung Sir" Chung Lok Hoi in the film where he pretended to be
Chin Wa's father in a meet the parents scene. At the time Chin Wa
mistakenly called him "Chung Sir" and caught the attention of Chow
Chung, who played Ng Yin Cho's father. Later Hui Siu Hung claimed to be
"Fong Chung Sir" even brought "Sir" in Chinese. This classic scene
continued to be spread wildly online. In addition, he has filmed many
dramas in recent years, and his role as "Brother Foon Hei" in the TVB
drama LINE WALKER also had the support of many online.
