The Louis Koo Tin Lok, Jessica Hester Hsuan (Suen Huen), Raymond Lam Fung starred film BACK TO THE PAST (CHUM CHUN GEI) was the continuation of the 2001 TVB series A STEP INTO THE PAST. Yesterday it was released simultaneously in Hong Kong and the mainland. All Hong Kong had 1460 shows. At a Kai Tak cinema many shows were almost all sold out; as for 4PM yesterday the film has taken in HK$ 7.26 million and already near THE LAST DANCE (POR. DEI YUK)'s HK$ 8.6 million single day box office record. Last night the BACK TO THE PAST official social platforms have already announced that it has reached the highest opening day box office in Hong Kong film history and also the 2025 opening day box office champion. According to the mainland Maoyan site as of 7:30 PM last night, BACK TO THE PAST's total box office was 30 million RMB (around HK$ 33.4 million). Viewers were interviewed after watching BACK TO THE PAST at the cinema. Claiming to be Koo Tin Lok's elementary school classmate, Mr. Lai praised the outstanding special effects and the decent ending arrangement, overall he was pleased; viewers Ms. Fung gave it a 9 out of 10, saying that the film was very nostalgic and funny; Mr. and Mrs. Cheung said that when the series aired they have not even met each other yet. In order to watching the movie, they watched the series again before going.

The 2025 Christmas box office fell over 30% from the same period in 2024. BACK TO THE PAST has been seen as the film to save the market and hopefully would bring cheer back to the Hong Kong cinema box office; Koo Tin Lok two nights ago attended the premiere and hoped that the new film would break THE LAST DANCE' HK$ 8.6 million single day box office. Last night it immediately reported the good news on the film's official social platforms, citing that BACK TO THEPAST not only was the 2025 opening day box office champion but also the highest opening day record for a Hong Kong film. Yesterday many Hong Kong viewers caught an early glimpse on the New Year's Eve. Even though the cinema scheduling was very dense, a Kai Tak cinema almost sold out every show. During the period many viewers were buying tickets on the spot and lined up before hand, some viewers also took the opportunity before the movie to take photos with the film promotional plaques.

Mr. Lai nd his girlfriend Ms. Ng attended together. The former revealed that he was Koo Tin Lok's elementary school classmate, so as soon as the movie opened he immediately showed his support. He said that he felt the BACK TO THE PAST ending was decent. He also followed the television series back then and the film has not disappointed him. "The special effects are very outstanding, quite a contrast from the television series. The technology has also improved a lot." Ms. Ng has not seen the television series but still thought that the film was very entertaining. "It's pretty interesting. Because I didn't watch the series before, after watching I want to watch the television series."

Ms. Fung and her boyfriend attended with her close friend Ms. Leung. They admitted to be A STEP INTO THEPAST fans and have watched it when they were little. They have looked forward to the film release for a long time and gave it a 9 out of 10; Ms. Fung said, "If you have seen the series you would discover many Easter eggs and familiar scenes. It's very entertaining and very funny, and would definitely bring back a lot of memories. The characters seem to have stayed on the screen back then, they didn't change much." Ms. Leung praised BACK TO THE PAST for its nostalgia. "This master apprentice plot between Koo Tin Lok and Lam Fung is greatly depicted and touches me the most, but I feel that the film is shorter in comparison. This time many new characters have been added, so other old characters would not have a lot of screen time in return. However seeing Liu Kai Chi and Tang Yat Kwan were quite surprising."

Mr. and Mrs. Cheung came as a date and after the show gave the movie a score of 8.5. They said that when the series aired they were still in school, have not met each other yet. However they each caught the series on their own, which was a childhood memory for them. Before the BACK TO THE STEP release the couple even watched the series again together in preparation for going to the movie. Mr. Cheung said, "I am very moved to see the past characters, most of them didn't really change and used their interpretation methods from back then. It's like seeing a group of a very familiar friends. However if it had Kong Wah it would be even better, the master and the apprentice recognition scene was very memorable." Mrs. Cheung praised the movie as well made. The newly added characters this time also meshed very well with the whole thing. The appearance of new technology in the film also felt very fresh.

Koo Tin Lok two nights ago attended the premiere and audience appreciation screening. He said that yesterday he would go to Guangzhou to thank the audience and attend teh premiere, as well as participate in a New Year's Eve countdown there. "This is the first New Year's Eve I wouldn't be in Hong Kong. Of course I am very happy and very honored to spend it with Suen Huen." Suen Huen also expressed her joy. "I haven't spent New Year's Eve at work in many years."

As the film opened two days ago, the cast promoted hard. Among them Suen Huen's "blue and orange" appearance looked very familiar. Some explained online on social media networks. "I felt a sense of deja vu when I saw Suen Huen's outfit. I thought for awhile......oh! I am sorry!" and posted a photo of the cleaning lady "Sister Kwan" in the TVB situation comedy LO AND BEHOLD. They looked like long lost twin sisters as the internet laughed and even suggested a film adaptation for LO AND BEHOLD.
