The Hong Kong film market although has not returned to its most glorious era has gradually improved as the box office has been on an upward trend. According to the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association's box office numbers so far (from January 1 to June 30, 2010) Chinese and foreign film total box office was HK$662,419,890. In comparison to HK$552,769,515 in the same period last time, the increase was 19.8%.
In the first half of this year, 137 films were first run releases. 27 were Hong Kong films and 110 were non Hong Kong films. Among the top ten highest grossing Hong Kong films, Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred in two, IP MAN 2 and 14 BLADES (GUM YI WAI). IP MAN 2 was on top with HK$43 million. 72 TENANTS OF PROSPERITY (72 GA JO HAT) was in second. In third was the Berlin Crystal Bear prize winning ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW (SHUI YUET SUN TAU) with 23 million. ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL TOO 2010 (FA TIN HEI SI 2010) was in fourth. Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) and Fiona Sit Hoi Kei reunited for the still in release BREAK UP CLUB (FUN SAU SHUET OI NEI) has been growing in momentum. With almost 9 million so far it is in fifth place. 14 BLADES, LOVE IN A PUFF (JI MING YU CHUN GIU), BEAUTY ON DUTY (MEI LAI MUK LING), ONCE A GANGSTER (FEI SA FUNG JUNG SHUEN) and GALLANTS (DA LUI TOI) rounded out the top ten.
The top non Hong Kong film box office was ALICE IN WONDERLAND with HK$44 million. In second was IRON MAN 2 with 29 million. In third was CLASH OF THE TITANS with 21 million.
