[2015.03.04] CHINA'S FEBRUARY BOX OFFICE IS NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD

In 2015 the Mainland film box office again reached new heights. With numerous Lunar New Year blockbusters, in February China's total box office exceeded 4 billion yuan RMB and for the first time surpassed the U.S. for first place in the world.

In February the U.S. total film box office was US$ 640 million while the Mainland's was 4.05 billion RMB or US$ 650 million. The slight victory over the U.S gave China first place in the world and a glimpse at the potential of the Mainland market; for February the highest grossing film was FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 2 (DOH SING FUNG WON II) with 654 million RMB. In second place DRAGON BLADE made almost 600 million. With other films like WOLF TOTEM, HURRY UP, BROTHER, SNOW GIRL AND THE DARK CRYSTAL and SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW the total box office reached 4.05 billion RMB. However the China box office takeoff did not mean that Chinese film production quality has improved. The audience tended to watch Hong Kong films and Hollywood films when they went to the movies, which threatened domestic films.
