The 9th Asian Film Awards took place last night at the Venetian Theater in Macau. Winning the Berlin Film Festival and the Golden Horse Award Best Actor last year with BLACK COAL, THIN ICE, Mainland actor Liao Fan won Best Actor again. Best Actress went to A GIRL AT MY DOOR's Korean actress Bao Doo-Na. Another Mainland actor Wang Zhiwen with THE GOLDEN ERA won Best Supporting Actor. Director Ann Hui On Wa with GOLDEN also won Best Director. Japanese actress Chizuru Ikewaki with THE LIGHT SHINES ONLY THERE won Best Supporting Actress. Best Newcomer went to COMING HOME's Zhang Huiwen. Best Film went to the Mainland film BLIND MASSAGE.
Fresh out of the oven Best Actor Liao Fan was very happy about the victory but regretted that he forgot to thank the cinematographer who was sitting next to him. Did he think he would win another award? He said that he did not think too much about it, as he has already settled down from winning last year at Berlin. He also thanked the jury for its love. As for how he would celebrate, he said that normal things will happen normally. Who would he like to work with among Hong Kong filmmakers? He said Sean Lau Ching Wan and Ann Hui On Wa. As for the fresh out of the oven Best Actress Bae Doo-Na she said that the winning film was a small budget production. She was already very happy with the nomination. She also said that everyone put their hearts into the production, so she was very happy that it got some attention. Best Supporting Actor Chizuru Ikewaki said that she never thought that she would win, so she was very excited. Was it a new challenge? She said that it was very hard to say, because every film only gave one chance.
The event also presented the Excellence Asian Cinema Award to Japanese actress Miki Nakatani. She said that it was rare to receive such a memorable award in such a good place in Asia. She hoped to display her own acting despite differences in culture, language and religion. She also said that although time has progressed, everyone faced different difficulties and hoped to share the message through film. The "Godfather of Korean film", Im Kwon-Taek received the Lifetime Achievement Award" and a standing ovation. Best Director Hui On Wa said that most of the GOLDEN story came from screen writer Li Qiang, thus she should share half the award with him.
Before the ceremony many stars appeared on the red carpet. They included Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Bae Doo-Na, Miki Nakatani, Rie Miyazawa, Cheryal Yang , Rhydian Vaughan (Fung Siu Ngok), Liao Fan, Takeru Satoh, Ivana Wong Yuen Chi and Do Kyung-Soo. Cheryl Yang walked with Fung Siu Ngok. Their friend Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) was rumored to have broken up with girlfriend Tiffany Hsu. Fung Siu Ngok said to question them. As a friend of course they would be concerned with each other but he needed his own space; Cheryl Yang added that they should be given space as well. Speaking of Yuen King Tin's online statement that "Tiffany is still my woman", Cheryl Yang said that she has not seen it and reiterated that they needed space. She also said that it would be better to ask them directly about them. Would she give them well? Cheryl Yang said awkwardly, "Today I am in the wrong place." Fung Siu Ngok said that no matter what they do, he would be happy for them and hope that they each find their own happiness.
Wong Yuen Chi said that she chose to wear a Hong Kong fashion designer's design. She said that she has already lost half of the weight that she wanted to lose, but some of it was natural. Speaking of her new film LOVE DETECTIVE (MOOT NUI SUN TAM) co-star Chen Jiajia was blasted for being four hours late to the poster shoot, she asked, "Really? We shot the poster separately, I don't know what happened. I didn't have any scene with her either, but I know she is very professional. Was she at work or had communication problems? (The photographer made fun of her as a 'big star'.) Perhaps they were close so they were joking around."
Kwok Fu Sing and Rie Miyazawa drew an uproar from the crowd. Sing Sing praised Rie as graceful, elegant and beautiful. Would he invite her to visit Hong Kong or Macau? He said that she was constantly in Hong Kong, but it was her first time in Macau. He also hoped to have a chance to play in a romantic film with her. This was the first time that Rie met Sing Sing and thought that he was handsome, gentle and attractive. She hoped that someone would bring them together for a collaboration.
