The 31st Hong Kong Film Award took place last night. With its international success and eight nominations A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) won five major awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay to become the big winner. With its 13 nominations FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP) also won 5 technical awards; WU XIA and LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM) won two awards each. It was Lau Tak Wa's third Best Actor Hong Kong Film Award and Sister Deanie's first Best Actress Hong Kong Film Award. Although she broke through zero, it was also her sixth Best Actress award with A SIMPLE LIFE.
Sister Deanie tasted her first Best Actress Hong Kong Film award. She admitted that since she did not win until she was in her sixties, she believed that would not have another chance. Although she made it sound like a will reading, the words truly came from her heart. Without Lau Tak Wa and Ann Hui On Wa's appreciation she might not possibly have this chance. She even gave a special thanks to director Wong Jing for constantly encouraging and trusting her, as well as viewers who enjoyed A SIMPLE LIFE and Hong Kong film. Wa Jai who defeated Lau Ching Wan, Jiang Wen and Ge You admitted that the biggest reason that he won was his contribution to Hong Kong film, which made everyone give him a lot of points. Thus he had to thank the voters. The host Eric Tsang Chi Wai improvised, "Brother Wa, it's luck from the baby." Wa Jai also thanked Sister Deanie. Without her he could not perform either. He also thanked the director for cutting out a lot of his poor performance and joked that A SIMPLE LIFE should have won Best Editing.

The Hong Kong box office record breaking Taiwan film YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE won the Best Mainland and Taiwan Film. Director Giddens Ko brought many actors to accept the award and let them each speak, leaving him without any time to give a speech. However when he, Michelle Chen and Ko Chen-Tung presented an award earlier, he had a lot to say as soon as he got on stage. He said that he was "this year's luckiest director" and joked with Ko Chen-Tung, "You are a newcomer, but I let you play me at my tallest and most handsome in my youth......since I treated you so well, I have something to discuss with you. Can I kiss Michelle Chen?" Ko Chen-Tung replied, "But you have to kiss me first." Ni Kuang (Ngai Hong) received the Lifetime Achievement Award and he went on stage with a crane in hand. He said that he was a little dizzy on the stage, then he took out his speech cheat sheet and humorously said, "I only have ten words, it won't take too long. Thank you event, thank you everyone, thank you very much!" Tsui Hark who presented the award to him said that his creativity was strong as he was able to write over 20,000 words a day and never changed his script.
