The music industry's third report card, "the 37th Top Ten Chinese Gold Song Awards" took place last night at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Joey Yung Cho Yi won four awards as the big winner among female singers and even won the Most Excellent Popular Female Singer Award for the eleventh year in a row. Announcing that he would miss all music awards, Eason Chan Yik Shun still won three awards including the Most Excellent Popular Male Singer Award, Top Ten Excellent Singers and the National Best Chinese Song award with CLOUDY DAY JOY. The male singer big winner was Hins Cheung King Hin with four awards.
The program opened with the introduction of top ten excellent singers, but this year eleven winners were announced. They even performed STAR to salute the late lyrics creator James Wong Jim. Then George Lam Chi Cheung performed to continue the salute to Uncle Jim.
As for this year's "Golden Needle Award", famous lyrics writer Lo Kwok Jim accepted the honor. The event arranged for the disciple who was rumored to be at odds with him Gallen Law Ka Leung along with Fanny, Johnny Ip Chun Tong, Cheung Tak Lan to perform his songs and present the award. Lo Kwok Jim appeared in a wheel chair. After receiving the award from Radio Hong Kong Deputy Director of Broadcasting Tai Keen Man he said, "I got into the business in 1968. In the last century I took 40 some years to write 1,000 songs, almost half a century. I had a lot of rumors, like this time receiving this award I also had a lot of rumors, related to Law Ka Leung." At this time Law Ka Leung bent down next to Lo Kwok Jim, they both smiled. Lo Kwok Jim continued, "We have no problem, many people say since you have listened (to rumors) in this business for several decades aren't you used to them? I said that I am very used to them, because they let me know that I am not a small figure." In 1992 Lo Kwok Jim was sued for fraud and falsifying documents by his management company artists Law Ka Leung and Roger Kwok Chun On. The court found him not guilty, but they both terminated their contracts with Lo Kwok Jim. Last night Law Ka Leung finally appeared to support his teacher.
This year the newly added "Hall of Fame" inducted its first member Alan Tam Wing Lun, his buddy Eric Tsang Chi Wai presented the award. Chi Wai gave the golden hand print to Alan and said that he deserved it, because since 1982 he has presented awards to Alan every time like he was the only one who knew Alan. Then later Alan retired from award shows. Why did he appear again this year? Chi Wai joked, "Actually his concert tickets aren't selling." The host immediately rushed to make the save, Chi Wai then joked, "Actually they are selling too well, even I couldn't get any. I want 10." Then he made fun of Alan for performing a concert series every year like he was grabbing money, but everyone liked him anyway. As for this honor, Alan said that every award was a singer's honor. He promised to sing until he was 80. Then Alan performed a medley of his 80s hits. All the singers and the audience stood up and clapped along.
After the award show Alan was asked about Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming)'s half year prison sentence. Alan felt that the court had evidence, the most important was for the plaintiff to know that he made a mistake. He had confidence in Cho Ming, remembering that when he first started he was a very nice kid, respected elders. His mother Joan Lin raised him very well, but it was very hard to say what friends Cho Ming made from then on. He was not at liberty to comment. Alan also revealed that earlier Jackie Chan attended his party. He pulled Jackie Chan aside and said that any family had to tough it out. He was a man and had many people who needed his care, including Joan Lin and his company's colleagues. Joan Lin also suffered a lot but this was not the end of the world, they could wait until Cho Ming was released to teach him. As for Jackie Chan's reply, Alan said that he could not say. If he would have a chance he too would discipline Cho Ming.
Last night's award ceremony was broadcast live on aTV. When Joey Leung Wing Chung, Tsang Chi Ho and Kwai Fa Tin presented an award they took mad jabs at aTV. Kwai Fa Tin said that Hong Kong had two free television stations. Chung Jai immediately said that there was only one. "The viewers of course watch for free, the workers also have to work for free." Later Kwai Fa Tin told them not to talk too much so they would not hold up the commercials. Chung Jai joked, "It's only a little over 300 bucks, I can afford it. Tonight is on me. All winning singers, you can give your speech to your heart's content."
"TVB god son" Lee Hak Kun said that he has not appeared on aTV for a long time. He jokingly asked his friend Chung Jai was he was for real. "Are you really covering whatever I say? I can talk for a long time!"
In addition, Emperor executive Ng Yu last night attended the pre race party. About Cho Ming's half year prison sentence, Ng Yu admitted that he read about it and felt that it was a conclusion. He said, "I know the sentencing meets the matter has come to an end. (How do you feel abou the sentence?) It's reasonable. This time is a lesson for him and an example for young people. I hope that after his release everyone would still love him and believe that he will have an even better tomorrow." Ng Yu also said that Cho Ming's parents and company both had expectations of him and hoped that he would return to show business soon. As for work, Ng Yu said for now he did not have any for Cho Ming, the most important was for him not to give up. Many elders would support him. As for Emperor female artist Alice Li (Lok Si), Ng Yu said that he was not certain who was involved and had to ask Mani (Fok Man Hei).
Lam Chi Chung was a guest performer and presenter. After presenting two Gold Song awards the host asked how he maintained his regal presence on stage. He paused for a long time, then he smiled and said, "You still want me to answer? I was thinking that I can go back and sleep! (How can you have a stage presence?) Wear shoes that make you taller!"
Singer Alex To Tak Wai last night was a guest presenter. When the host asked how he was able to maintain his handsomeness, Alex said that he had three secrets, "First you have to marry a young wife, second you have to say to yourself 'I am very cool' in the mirror every morning when you get up, third when you feel you are very proud you have to tell yourself to be humble!"
The hosts during commercial breaks conversed to fill time. Despite being a government operated organization, it still mentioned the performance of the police during the "Umbrella Movement".
One host heard that POLICE REPORT would replace Jackie Chan's TOUGH GUY as its theme song. Another host asked if it had to do with Jackie Chan's problem in Beijing. Later the host explained that because the police image had to keep up with the times. As the Police Commissioner Andy Tsang Wai Hung said, the police protects its people like a kind mother. The host sang a few songs but changed the lyrics to poke fun at current affairs like "A pair of hands that have no way to stop", "Mama I am not wrong" and "I just called to say I arrest you" and kept the crowd laughing.
