The 5 day "13th Greater China Film Directors' Forum" ended yesterday in Hong Kong. The event two nights ago held a farewell banquet at a Repulse Bay hotel. Over 200 directors from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong attended. Jackie Chan, Shu Qi, Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga), Nina Paw Hee Ching, Alex Fong Chung Shun and his wife Mok Ho Yan were among the guests.
Jackie Chan arrived before the banquet started. When he saw a group of old friends he greeted them one by one. He even went to the 84 year old Taiwan director Lee Hsing to greet him. Later he flew all over the venue and greeted everyone at each table. When Shu Qi arrived, she saw friends Doze Niu Chen-Zer and Andrew Lau Wai Keung and embraced them. During the banquet, the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild president Derek Yee Tung Sing was responsible for a speech. He mentioned that this year many new directors participated, which pleased him. He also followed the Mainland and Taiwan presidents' opinions for the new directors of the three places to speak. First Taiwan director Niu Chen-Zer said, "This time in Hong Kong I met many new directors, now the film market enables us to make movies that we want to watch. I feel encouraged." He even joked that director Hou Hsiao-Hsien was "My Pa", and he watched the very handsome martial art star Yee Tung Sing's films since he was little. On this trip to Hong Kong he had good food and fun everyday. After four years they could meet again in Taiwan. The new Mainland director and Huang Jianxin's son Huang Lei said, "This trip to Hong Kong has been very touching, I met many friends of the same age and we have mutual exchanges. Making movies is everyone's common dream, I wish everyone smooth productions." Vicki Zhao Wei was unable to attend but made a video to congratulate everyone.
When it was time for the Hong Kong director to speak, President Yee Tung Sing asked the vice president Lau Wai Keung to speak with his less than fluent Putonghua. Claiming to be the oldest young director, Lau Wai Keung was interrupted as soon as he spoke. Jackie Chan said, "What?" The entire venue said that they did not understand, so he went and got Shu Qi to translate. Everyone rose up and said that he would be fined HK$500 for every word he got wrong, but he again opened his mouth. "I am very happy, this time......" Jackie Chan interrupted and corrected him. Then Lau Wai Keung wanted to say Yee Tung Sing but said Yu Tung Sing instead, which cracked up everyone. Jackie Chan even joked, "Did you bring enough money?" Even Shu Qi said in Cantonese, "Why don't you just switch back to Cantonese!" Then Jackie Chan helped him out and joked in Putonghua, "When you use Cantonese they don't understand, when you use Putonghua they understand you even less. However if we want Taiwan or Mainland directors to use Cantonese, they would say no too, right?" Everyone applauded. He continued, "The Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild has been established for 23 years and the forum has been held for 13 years. I hope that everyone would keep them going." Finally the event invited Cheung Ngai Ga to speak. She said, "Hong Kong treats me like I am from Taiwan, Taiwan treats me like I am from Hong Kong. I am very happy to see everyone tonight. I want to say that the Golden Horse Award is fair, I welcome all Chinese language films to the Golden Horse Award. Thank you everyone."
