Donnie Yen Chi Tan earlier went with his wife Cissy Wang, Raymond Wong Pak Ming and Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam) to attend IP MAN 3's Asia tour first stop in Malaysia. Playing Chi Tan's wife in the film, Lynn said that she finished the slapping scene with Chi Tan in three takes. Chi Tan joked, "No wonder you are constantly getting picked on, let me teach you how to fight. You can protect yourself and hit the men who are picking on you." Cissy was asked if she would slam Chi Tan. Chi Tan again humorously said, "It doesn't hurt when the old lady slaps me, so she usually uses a staff."
Producer Wong Pak Ming revealed how he brought boxing champion Mike Tyson into the fold and revealed that director Wilson Yip Wai Shun and screenwriter Edmond Wong Chi Wun only spent four hours to create the character for Tyson, then he agreed to perform.
