The only Chinese film in competition at this year's Venice Film Festival, DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME (DIK YUN KIT ji TUNG TIN DAI GOK) held its global premiere on the 5th. Director Tsui Hark, executive producers Wang Zhonglei and Shi Nansun, many key actors including Andy Lau Tak Wa, Li Bingbing, Carina Lau Ka Ling, and Deng Chao walked the premiere red carpet. The appearance of this year's jury chair Quentin Tarantino led to a stir. After the screening the applause lasted ten minutes as the world film industry again saw the exciting and authentic Tsui wuxia film.
When the team arrived at the premiere, the entire audience stood up and welcomed them with passionate applause. The actors waved to the audience in appreciation. Aside from all the passionate viewers, this year's jury chair and Tsui Hark fan Quentin Tarantino appeared as a viewer and led to a stir. When the film reached Lau Tak Wa and Li Bingbing's first fight scene and Lau Tak Wa did a spit take at Li Bingbing, the audience cracked up. Even Lau Tak Wa smiled and turned around to applaud Li Bingbing. Lau Ka Ling played Wu Zetian in the film and was very well suited for the film. As they left, she walked a little faster and Lau Tak Wa behind her joked, "Wu Zetian! Slow down a little!"
In addition, international film magazine VARIETY gave DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME a score of 7.6, the highest score since the Venice Film Festival opened so far.
