The 96th Oscars would take place on March 10th next year. In September, the Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga), Simon Yam Tat Wa, Henick Chou Hon Ning and Cecilia Choi Sze Wan starred film A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN) announced that it would represent Hong Kong in the competition for the Oscar "Best International Film" category. This film competed for the Golden Horse Awards last year and won Sylvia Chang her third Best Actress Golden Horse Award. However, A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT for reasons unknown has been disqualified. According to the U.S. media reports, this year 92 films applied to compete for the Best International Film award, in the end on the member voting ballot only 88 qualified. A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT was not one of the choices.
Around 5 PM yesterday, A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT's social media page posted the Federation of Motion Film Producers of Hong Kong's statement, "To A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT Co. Ltd.: this Federation through a new selection committee under fair and just and in accordance of the usual process as in the past selected A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT to represent Hong Kong in participation of the 96th Oscars Best International Film competition. Unfortunately the Federation recently received notification from the Oscars, A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT was unable to represent Hong Kong in comparison; the reason of which the Federation is still trying to get an understanding of. A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT by a majority of the selection committee was chosen to represent Hong Kong in competition, which was well deserved. Unable to participate in the competition this time was truly regrettable. The incident has been rarely seen and very regrettable."
A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT's official page wrote, "The team this morning received the notice from the Federation of the Motion Film Producers of Hong Kong: A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT was unable to successfully land on the Oscars' Best International Film selection lists for unknown reasons. The team not only feels deeply regret but also would silently await the Federation and the Oscars' further explanation. Thank you everyone for your concern."
Also disqualified were Cuba's NELSITO'S WORLD, as well as Kyrgyzstan's THIS IS WHAT I REMEMBER and Tajikistan's MELODY. The Oscars has yet provided any reason.
