Tsui Hark's previous film DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME (DIK YUN KIT ji TUNG TIN DAI GOK) was a commercial and critical hit. Now he and Huayi Brothers teamed up again on the DETECTIVE DEE PREQUEL, the production of which would be even bigger, the style more mysterious, the cast even fresher, and the special effects even more pinnacle. Tsui Hark even for the first time attempted to actualize a 3D shoot underwater and pushed the Chinese film technique toward a new level.

As for actors, top actors and actresses from three lands on both sides of the strait included AngelaBaby, Feng Shaofeng, Chiu Yau Ting, the rising star from SCARLET HEART Lin Gengxin, BOYS OVER FLOWERS Korean hunk Kim Beom and others. For her first Tsui Hark film, Baby did her homework. She not only turned down all project for the second half of the year but also studied the Tang Dynasty female fashion culture. She discovered that in the Tang Dynasty only after Yang Guifei was "fat considered beauty". She joked, "Then my shape still passes!"

Tsui Hark was Feng Shaofeng's idol. Feng said that he had to "sneak a peek" at what he did to learn; Chiu Yau Ting was attracted to Tsui Hark's fantastic imagination. As for Lin Gengxin and Kim Beom, when asked about why they took this role they acted like fans. "Because of Tsui Hark. I wanted to be in his movies even in my dream."
