The 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards yesterday announced its nominees in 19 category. THE BULLETS VANISHES (SIU SUT DIK JI DAN) and COLD WAR (HONG JIN) both received 12 nominations to lead the pack. Chapman To Man Jat with VULGARIA (DAI JOOK HEI KET) received his first Best Actor nomination to compete with Best Actress frequent flyers Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Lau Ching Wan; he also received a Best Supporting Actor nomination with DIVA.
Leung Ka Fai with the critical and commercial hit COLD WAR was nominated for Best Actor and was considered the favorite. LOVE LIFTING (GO GUI OI)'s Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam surprised with her first Best Actress nomination and faced THE GREAT MAGICIAN (DAI MOR SHOOK SI) and THE SILENT WAR (TING FUNG JEH)'s Zhou Xun, elders Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man were only considered outside shots.
The 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards will take place on April 13th at the Cultural center. THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) was not released in time to compete, but Leung Chiu Wai still was nominated for his portrayal of a blind person in THE SILENT WAR and headed for his 6 Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor. Currently at the Berlin Film Festival he calmly thanked everyone.
To Man Jat will compete for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Facing four great Hong Kong Film Award Best Actors, he felt that his chance was very slim. "I would pretend that I would be attending a party, participation counts." He earlier with DIVA won the Hong Kong Film Critic Society Best Actor but he did not see himself as the Hong Kong Film Award favorite. Instead he picked Ronald Cheng Chung Kei to win Best Supporting Actor with VULGARIA. Lau Ching Wan was nominated for Best Actor again with THE BULLET VANISHES. He said, "BULLET received 12 nominations, I am also in the Best Actor competition. I am truly very happy but I will face it calmly." BULLET producer Derek Yee Tung Sing felt that the only flaw was Nicholas Tse Ting Fung was not nominated.
LOVE LIFTING got Kong Yeuk Lam her first Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress nomination, with competition from THE GREAT MAGICIAN (DAI MORE SHOOK SI) and THE SILENT WAR's Zhou Xun, LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING)'s Miriam Yeung Chin Wa and ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II)'s Sammi Cheng Sau Man. Not only everyone was amazed, even she did not dare to believe it. Kong Yeuk Lam jumped with joy after receiving the good news and broke down. She said, "It truly is incredible. The nomination is already a great encouragement, it's already enough. The competition is too strong." Cheng Sau Man thanked director Johnnie To Kei Fung for his years of trust and also Wai Ka Fai and Yau Nai Hoi for their familiarity with her, witnessing her life experience and changes and writing scripts that showed her abilities. "Co-stars who know me inside out give me power, thank you lead actor (Louis) Koo Tin Lok." Chin Wa felt that everyone who liked "Cherie" was the main reason of her nomination, she felt very happy.
DaDa Chan Jing with her revealing performance in VULGARIA was nominated for Best Supporting Actress against Susan Shaw Yam Yam, Jiang Yiyan, Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling) and Mavis Fan Hiu Huen. She said, "I am very happy to be nominated with Sister Yam Yam, this is a surprise gift. To Man Jat and the director are the two most important men in my career. I appreciate them. The nomination is already profit, I pick Sister Yam Yam."
Originally nominated for Best New Performer with LOVE IN THE BUFF, Lam Siu Ha was discovered to have competed in the category before and was ousted. She said that it was regrettable but the nomination already was a recognition. "I would work hard with Brenda (her character)'s spirit."
Ronald Cheng Chung Kei and Gordon Lam Ka Tung were nominated for Best Supporting Actor with VULGARIA and COLD WAR respectively. Cheng Chung Kei earlier won the Golden Horse Best Supporting Actor and thus was the favorite, but his confidence did not increase. He said, "I asked the Hong Kong Film Award chair (Gordon) Chan Ka Seung, after winning an award would the chance be better? He said not necessarily, anyone who won might not win. I pick THE BOUNTY (YUEN HUNG)'s (Alex) Man Chi Leung. He with his big eye contacts was very outstanding!" He said that his wife Sammie Yu Sze Man would accompany him. He hoped that she would be lucky for him just like at the Golden Horse Award. However they would not bring their daughter.
Both picked Leung Ka Fai to win Best Actor. Half confident to win Best Supporting Actor, Lam Ka Tung regretted that Aaron Kwok Fu Sing was unable to compete for Best Actor. He said, "Sing Sing in COLD WAR gave a very fiery performance. When we worked together I saw fire in his eyes. I originally thought he had a great chance to be nominated." He told Sing Sing not to be disappointed since he has won the Golden Horse Best Actor.
As for Best Actor, Cheung Chung Kei voted for LOVE IS PAJAMAS' Teresa Mo Shun Kwan but Sister Mo was not nominated. Lam Ka Tung picked Zhou Xun. THE 32ND HONG KONG FILM AWARD NOMINATIONS
