Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau) in the Nick Cheung Ka Fai directed film GHOST RITUALS (YU LAN SUN GUNG) played a Cantonese Opera diva. Cheung Ka Fai's sincerity moved her, despite her fear of ghost. Thus she agreed to perform. "This was a chance to conquer my fear of making ghost films."
Lau Sum Yau put on opera make up in the theater. Once due to the dark lighting backstage and multiple mirrors, after she put on her white face foundation she was scared stiff when she looked at the mirror and screamed. "I saw in the mirror a white face with widened eyes, I felt a chill and shrieked." Lau Sum Yau even trained her tolerance of heat. She and Cheung Ka Fai rehearsed outdoors, even in thick white face make up and sweat she had no complaint. She even said that she had a hand held battery operated fan!
