The 21st Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards ceremony took place yesterday at the Hong Kong Film Archive. Sean Lau Ching Wan and Vicki Zhao Wei with OVERHEARD 3 (SIT TING FUNG WON 3) and DEAREST won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. The experienced Zhao Wei broke into tears during the film highlight. Winning Best Actor for the fourth time, Ching Wan humbly said that he felt guilty about winning.
The Society also announced 9 recommended films, including DEAREST, THE GOLDEN ERA, OVERHEARD 3, KUNG FU JUNGLE (YUT GOR YUN DIK MO LUM), THE CROSSING I (TAI PING LUN: LUEN SAI FAU SUN), THAT DEMON WITHIN (MOR GAING), DOT 2 DOT (DIM DUI DIM), DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART 2 (DAN SUN NAM NUI 2) and SARA (CHOR GEI). Fruit Chan Gor with THE MIDNIGHT AFTER (NA YEH LING SUN, NGOR JOR SEUNG LIU WONG GOK HOI WONG DAI BO DIK HUNG VAN) won Best Film and Best Director. Best Screenplay went to Wai Ka Fai and Ryker Chan Wai Bun for DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART 2 and Zhang Ji for DEAREST.
After Zhao Wei watched the film highlight, she broke into tears when she accepted Best Actress on the stage. She gave special thanks to Peter Chan Ho Sun because no director asked her to play a farmer before. Actually she had the potential to be a farmer, the two months in production were both painful and joyous. She had a memorable experience. Zhao Wei said that while watching the film highlight again she was moved and broke into tears. During the shoot, she cried many times. The script indeed moved her. Zhao Wei even hoped the film would bring attention to the Mainland children kidnapping problems and said that during the shoot she deliberately did not wear any make up in order to look closer to reality. Earlier when she worked in Luohu, no one recognized her.
Was she more confident about the Hong Kong Film award? Zhao Wei said that winning awards depended on luck and substance, more confidence might be useless; she also said that this time the competition would be strong. She felt that her performance was fine so she would not have any burden when she would attend the award. Since she already had the recognition of the Film Critic Society, she would congratulate whoever the winner would be. However she has not seen the other films. Speaking of winning with Ching Wan, Zhao Wei regretted that they have never worked together. They did not even have the chance to chat. Thus earlier she grasped the opportunity to chat with him. She has been working on Johnnie To Kei Fung's film recently, and she has already asked Ching Wan who has worked with Ah To many times for advice.
Reportedly the rise in Ali film industry stocks she made 500 million yuan. She said that she would not respond to the question. She only did her thing, other people do other things. Did she have an unique insight? Zhao Wei said that she was only responsible for making movies and would not pay attention to anything else.
Ching Wan said that watching his film highlight he thought Kenneth Tsang Kong won, because he performed better than him. He said that every time he won he felt like he could perform better. If he did not have an award he would feel that his performance was decent. He felt very conflicted. Ching Wan even said that this time he felt guilty about winning the award. ,BR>
Later, Ching Wan explained that the film had many actors who performed well. He felt that he won out of luck. Was he unlucky before? He said, "To be able to have a good script and work with a good director, I am already very lucky. Thus I received the nomination." Would this victory increase his Hong Kong Film Award confidence? He said that they were not connected because the voters were different. He said, "In my years of experience, when I won this award I wouldn't win the Hong Kong Film Award. So it is out of my control." Ching Wan said that after promoting the film, it was not up to him to care about how the film developed. Yet he was very happy that OVERHEARD 3's Kenneth Tsang Kong and Alex Fong Chung Shun were nominated. Was he afraid that his two nominations would split up his votes? Ching Wan believed it would not. Speaking of Zhao Wei making 500 million yuan from Ali film industry, he said that he knew nothing about it but felt that she was very sharp.
Chan Gor thanked the production team and investors. He pointed out that in the past two years Hong Kong was in a complicated stage, and his films were about the society. Chan Gor said, "This is our Hong Kong, our home, Hong Kong film will continue on."
