The film IP MAN 2 after May Day continued to climb at the box office. After only 11 days in release it easily broke 28 million at the box office and exceeded the first film's 25 million box office record. Despite having less screens than rival IRON MAN 2, with its strong word of mouth it surpassed its competition by over 6 million to become the box office champion. Even more encouraging was that it broke the curse of the sequel performing worse than its predecessor.

Currently working on his new film, Donnie Yen Chi Tan was very happy about the Hong Kong box office breakthrough and regretted that he could not return to Hong Kong in time to celebrate. He said, "I would like to thank ticket buying movie going viewers, who proved that everyone liked IP MAN 2 and everyone's hard work hasn't gone wasted." He expressed that the film company contacted him about attending the celebration, but because he, director Wilson Yip Wai Shun and boss Raymond Wong Pak Ming were not in Hong Kong, and Sammo Hung Kam Bo was not free either, they decided not to celebrate yet. As for IP MAN 3, he would wait until the script was out before deciding.

In IP MAN 2 Chi Tan and the English boxer's duel was the entire film's climax. This scene not only satisfied the audience but also Chi Tan who said that after the scene he felt blood rushing to his heart. Even he was touched. Playing the Cyclone, foreign actor Darren Shahlavi was one of Chi Tan's students 20 years ago when he opened a school in Europe. After several days on the shoot, he took out a photo of the "apprentice ceremony" before Chi Tan could recognize him.
