THE LAST DANCE's Tommy Chu, TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN's Philip Ng and STRANGE EYES' Lee Kang-Sheng would compete for the Asian Film Festival Best Supporting Actor courtesy of mingpao.com |
Three nominees for Best Supporting Actor at the 18th Asian Film Awards, Philip Ng Wan Lung, Tommy Chu Pak Hoang and Li Kang-sheng participated in the "Supporting Actors' Home Field" forum the night before to share their acting experiences. Director Lawrence Kan Kwan Chun was the host. Chu Pak Hong and Ng Wan Lung have collaborated on commercials more than 20 years ago. Now they can compete for the supporting actor award together, which feels very fateful.
Chu Pak Hong felt that during the performance understanding the script was the most important, only that would you be able to find the characterization of the role. He said, "While making THE LAST DANCE (POR. DEI YUK), I was already very familiar with (Michelle) Wai Sze Nga; but because of the characters we had to deliberately keep our distance. On the set I saw her having a very hard time with the production and was very tired, but I still couldn't go over and comfort her."
Ng Wan Lung remembered that he first got business as a stuntman, during the shoot due to nerves he went the wrong director and his neck was caught on the wires. Luckily the masters had experience and directly dropped him onto the ground. He was only frightened but not in danger, but he fainted.
Lee Kang-Sheng said that the supporting role was more relaxed and he was able to perform at will. He could even "kill" the lead. In addition he did not need to worry about the box office pressure. He revealed that he went to Brussels on a tour of his play, his body showed signs of a stroke as he was less than mobile on half of his body. The doctor told him that if he continued to perform his life would be at risk, but he insisted on performing. The audience immediately applauded as a salute. All three agreed that whether in leading or supporting roles they hoped to be able to help the film. When everyone made contributions, that movie would be a very entertaining work.
Chu Pak Hong has already won the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Best Supporting Actor award. He said that he would not be looking at Ng Wan Lung as an opponent at tonight's ceremony. He explained, "Because we all represent Hong Kong, we would be happy when anyone win the award. When someone from Hong Kong people win the award we would be even happier." Was Chu Pak Hong confident about winning? He said that he would leave it up to God, but he also hoped that Michael Hui Koon Man can win the best actor, and will seize the opportunity to take photos with other movie stars for his collection. Last year was a bumper year, Chu Pak Hong also felt that he was lucky. He would remind himself not to be flattered and to continue to work hard to progress. Would he increase his salary after winning the award? He said, "I just want to have a reasonable salary. Now that the industry is in the cold winter, it is already good to have a job. If any new director wants to collaborate, with suitable roles I wouldn't mind reducing the salary." When Ng Wan Lung heard this and said that when he would be a director, he would definitely ask Chu Pak Hong to make a movie.
Chu Pak Hong did not celebrate after winning the Directors' Guild Best Supporting Actor. He explained that being able to win the award was already a great celebration, he did not need to make a big deal again. Ng Wan Lung suggested that Chu Pak Hong should celebrate and would not mind paying the bill for him. Chu Pak Hong considered inviting everyone for drinks after hearing it. As for whether Ng Wan Lung was confident of winning the award, he said, "I am very happy to be nominated, I hope that everyone will no longer regard me as a 'puppet' and think that Ng Wan Lung has acting skills."
Ng Wan Lung said that the most important was to enjoy the process, like the production and receiving audience recognition. Being nominated was also a happy process. He was grateful that he kept having roles to play and his acting has been noticed. He also pointed out that lately he has been working on an action film, but accidentally injured his posterior muscle. He could only act like he was not in pain, and joked that he relied on acting skills.
