In the film the Chaozhou gang brethren Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Philip Keung Ho Man, Wilfred Lau Ho Lung, Yu Kang lived in a subdivided room in the Kowloon Walled City when they first arrived in Hong Kong. In addition when Lui Lok went into the city for an negotiation he was attacked. Crippled Ho risked his life to save Lui Lok and solidified their trust. Yen Chi Tan said, "The Kowloon Walled City was a very attractive landmark in mob films. Building the Kowloon Walled City again picked up past Hong Kong mob film nostalgia; I also tried to use 60s Funk and Soul music, which was rarely used in Hong Kong films."

The 81 year old TVB makeup master Chan Man Fai was rumored to be seriously ill with lung cancer in July. His family arranged for him to recover at a nursing home and receive Chinese medicine therapy. Last night his son Chan Chi Tan sent text messages to family and friends to inform them that Brother Fai passed away at 8:15 PM peacefully and had no pain. He thanked everyone for their love for Brother Fai. Chan Chi Tat praised Brother Fai as a responsible and good father, a legend and he was proud of his Papa. Chan Man Fai joined the business at age 17 as a makeup apprentice. At the end of the 60s he joined TVB and worked there for 37 years. He was the top makeup artist; after retirement in 2004 he served as a cosmetic instructor and operated a makeup business. His son Chan Chi Tat also became a makeup artist under his tutelage. Brother Fai in June learned that he had lung cancer. After fighting for over four months he unfortunately passed away on the Mid Autumn night last night.

In March Chan Man Fai attended Chung King Fai's 80th birthday banquet and looked good; in July suddenly he was rumored to have lung cancer. Chan Chi Tat at the time confirmed the rumor. Chan Man Fai started smoking since he was young. Chan Chi Tat revealed that Papa at first had chest pains and went to the hospital two or three times. Due to Chan Man Fai's age, chemotherapy would be very difficult. His family arranged for him to receive Chinese medicine therapy.

Chan Chi Tat said that when Papa passed, his family was by his side. Papa went very peacefully and was not in pain. He said that Papa was in pain for awhile, recently his condition deteriorated and the family was mentally prepared. They did not dare to take half a step away.

As for Brother Fai's final wish, Chan Chi Tat said that Papa missed his children and grandchildren the most. He comforted him and told him not to worry. As for the funeral arrangement, he would wait until his aunt's return to Hong Kong today to discuss further. He praised Brother Fai as a very responsible and good father. His professionalism influenced him a lot. He even learned the makeup trade from him, but he was far from his father's achievements. He has always been proud of his father.

Many artists have worked with Chan Man Fai. Las night Nancy Sit Ka Yin said that she was very saddened. She recalled that when she was a child star she was sleepy during the shoot. Brother Fai had to prop up her chin to apply makeup on her. She said, "Brother Fai made a lot of contributions to film and television makeup. His makeup designs were very detailed." Ruco Chan Chin Pang and Lee Shan Shan eulogized him online. Lee Shan Shan wrote, "In the past I have seen his dignified side and also always come in contact with his humorous and joyous side. Brother Fai, during our days at the television station, thank you for your care during the pageant and when I officially joined the business. Miss you always, our makeup master Mr. Chan Ma Fai."

[2017.10.02] DAYO WONG GOES FREESTYLE AS A PIRATE

Fala Chen lets go of her lady like image and sits boldly
Dayo Wong creates his own freestyle Taishan dialect and adds comedy to his character
courtesy of on.cc

Artist Dayo Wong Tze Wah for his new film played the famous pirate Cheung Bo Jai. In the trailer released yesterday, he created freestyle Taishan dialect to add to the comedy of the character. "My Cheung Bo Jai is a very happy mad man. In order to make himself happy he can thoroughly abuse those around him. He is very dominant." He also said that he was not afraid that the audience would compare him to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEANS' Johnny Depp. Fala Chen also let go of her image for the film as he dark, scarred and stained tooth pirate, which was quite a departure.

[2017.10.02] ANDY LAU REMAKES HEART OF THE WANDERER

courtesy of singtao.com

Andy Lau Tak Wa for CHASING THE DRAGON (JUI LUNG) remade the hit FROM THE HEART OF A WANDERER (LONG JI SUM SING) and made a music video with film footage. In the film Crippled Ho and Lui Lok competed in the word of money and power. Wa Jai said about their relationship, "They have never seen each other as friends, but in old age when they thought back on some important events and people they realized that they were real friends. They were opponents, as well as colleagues. This was also what was delicate about their relationship." The biggest difference between the two was Lui Lok saw himself as the most important. In the end he sensed that love, family, friendship were the most important. Power and money were secondary. Thus when he foresaw the danger that would affect his family, he was determined to leave all the power he had and left Hong Kong. Wa Jai thought that FROM THE HEART OF THE WANDERER was coincidentally in the same vain as the film's theme of "Life and death are destined, fame and fortunate are up to Heaven" and thus he used the song to promote the film.

Hong Kong mob films once were all the rage in the 70s and the 80s Hong Kong film industry. The film company hoped that CHASING THE DRAGON would be able to start a new trend for Hong Kong mob films. Donnie Yen Chi Tan felt that back then Lau Tak Wa was the on screen symbol of this genre. "He had more mob film experience than me. This time I was able to learn from him, especially how he performed the role of Lui Lok. Our dramatic scene rehearsals also resembled the action scenes. We sparred and interacted.

The 54th Golden Horse Awards will take place on November 25h in Taipei. Yesterday the nominations were announced. The Lifetime Achievement Award will go to TOUCH OF ZEN's internationally renowned, two time Golden Horse Best Actress Hsu Feng. The Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year will be Hu Ding-Yi.

This year's nominated films were mainly Taiwan films. Among them THE GREAT BUDDHA + received the most nominations with ten. LOVE EDUCATION, THE BOLD, THE CORRUPT AND THE BEAUTIFUL and SEE YOU TOMORROW each had seven. Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo) with SEE YOU TOMORROW received his first Best Actor nomination. He would compete against Chuang Kai-hsun, Huang Bo, Tian Zhuangzhuang and Tu Men. SEE YOU TOMORROW also was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, Best Makeup & Costume Design, and Best Original Film Song. This was Gum Sing Mo's first Golden Horse acting nomination, he was previously nominated for Best Original Film Song with PERHAPS LOVE. After learning about his nomination, Gum Sing Mo responded, "Thank you! Thank you very much!"

Best Actress nominees included Kara Wai Ying Hung, Shu Qi, Sylvia Chang, Vicky Chen and Yin Shin. Nominated with THE BOLD, THE CORRUPT, AND THE BEAUTIFUL, Siu Hung was happy and surprised to learn about her nomination. "Very happy, but also very surprised. I never thought that I would be nominated because no one told me about the Golden Horse Award application. I didn't know when the nominations were to be announced either." She said that the film was made in Taiwan early in the year. At the time she had no expectation. She has not made any film for an award, as she would only do her best. How confident was she? She humbly said that she dared not think about it. "Because the competition is strong. Earlier I was on the Taipei Film Festival jury. I watched all four nominated films. Everyone performed very well, very powerfully. (Who is the biggest rival?) Everyone is. Everyone's taste is different, it's very hard to guess. However I have always had confidence in myself, 1/5 to win an award. Let it be, don't be so nervous. I will attend."

Best Supporting Actor nominees were OUR TIME WILL COME's Tony Leung Ka Fai, Mason Lee, Lei Jianyin, Leon Dai and Bamboo Chen; as for Best Supporting Actress, OUR TIME WILL COME's Deanie Ip Tak Han, Wu Yanshu, Chen Shiang Chyi, Vicky Chen and Tiffany Hsu Wei-Ning will compete.

Sammo Hung Kam Bo with PARADOX received a Golden Horse Best Action Choreography nomination, his third. "All three nominations were with Director Wilson Yip (Wai Shun). Thank you for you love Golden Horse Award and thank you everyone for liking this film!"
