The Radio and Television Hong Kong organized "47th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs" award concert was held at the East Kowloon Cultural Centre Theatre on the 24th. This year the event with the theme "Entire City In Love" arranged for singers to interpret their award winning work in an all new "musical theater" format for the audience to diverse song style and creativity of Hong Kong Chinese popular music. Radio Hong Kong also announced that the "Top Ten Chinese Gold Song" would "break out of Hong Kong". In addition to bringing the award concert to the mainland for broadcasting, it would also hold the "Top 10 Chinese Gold Song -- Shanghai Gold Song Festival" in Shanghai to promote cross- regional cultural exchanges through music. In terms of female singers, Gin Lee Hung Ngai won four awards in one fell swoop and became the big winner. As for male singers, Jay Fung Wan Him and Terence Lam Ka Him also won four awards with the music composition award; one of which covered both performer and composition awards.

In addition to the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Algernon Yau Ying Wah, the guests attending the event included the Director of Broadcasting, Angelina Kwan Yuen Yee, the Chairman of the Composers an Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH), Chan Wing Wah, the Chairman of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) Association (Hong Kong), Colin Cheung Kwok Lam, President of the Hong Kong Record Merchants Association, Mimi Chung Wai Wai, Director of the Hong Kong Office of Shanghai Media Group, Yu Hua, the Music Broadcasting Host of Beijing Radio and Television Station, Wang Jingyu, and the Manager of the Television Program Division of Teledifusao De Macau S.A., Leung Chi Yong.

Before the award presentation concert, some of the award-winning singers and units appeared for an event group photo, then the event held a souvenir presentation ceremony to present souvenirs to guests and representatives of supporting organizations.

The evening kicked off with an excerpt from the Hong Kong Dance Company's performance of "KUNG FU ARTISTRY", which used body language to interpret Bruce Lee's "No Way as Way", echoing the unique charm and vitality of the Hong Kong pop music scene. Afterwards, the officiating guest, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Yau Ying Wah, accompanied by nine winners of the "Excellent Pop Singer Award", presided over the launching ceremony of the musical theater, injecting momentum into the Gold Song concert and sending love to the whole city through musical notes.

Different from the previous format, Radio Hong Kong began to present some awards one after another last month. The "CASH Best Creative Singer Award", "Best Chinese Record Award", "Global Chinese Supreme Gold Song Award" and "Best Male/Female Pop Singer Award" were announced yesterday. Winning the Top Ten Chinese Gold Song Award for LOVE SURVIVAL GUIDE, James Ng Yip Kwan admitted that he would leave the record company during his performance on stage and said that he was attending the awards ceremony as a TMG (TVB Music Group) singer for the last time. After winning the award, Ng Yip Kwan said in an interview that he still had a contract with Shaw Brothers and TVB, but his contract with TMG has expired. He has decided not to renew the contract, and planned to release new songs in the form of self- financing. Currently he first had to learn how to be an independent singer. "I have to handle the song copyrights and the matter of starting a company. This year I want to be a little rebellious, and try what completely owning the song right feels like. I am a big boy now, if I am not willful once it would be too late. My wife knows about my ideas. Originally we wanted to move to a bigger place, but right now we are saving up 'ammo'. We shouldn't be so frivolous. (How much ammo do you have?) I saved up 6 figure." They have decided to continue to live in their Tuen Mun love nest for awhile and would rather save up the money they would have spent dining out for music videos. When asked if any other company has beckoned to him, he admitted that he has not yet had contact with other record companies. He also complained about "not knowing how expensive rice is". "I have discussed with a producer that actually making a song is 20 to 30% more than expected. Right now I just found out that making music video requires paying royalty." He revealed that he has received some demos so far, but he would choose very carefully to ensure accuracy before releasing the first song. Janice Vidal (Wai Lan) has just celebrated her 44th birthday. She said that winning an award was one of the best birthday gifts, but what makes her even happier was being able to meet singers she has not seen in a long time. Recently touring in the mainland, Janice has planned to hold the final leg of the tour at the Hong Kong Coliseum at the end of the year and planned to invite her former boss Leon Lai Ming as a guest. She also stated that she wanted to date, but her friends all thought that she already had an significant other so she lacked suitors.

In order to further promote Cantonese music outside Hong Kong, Radio Hong Kong will not only invite Shanghai Media Group China Dragon TV as the exclusive television media partner in the Mainland to broadcast this year's awards concert, but also hold the "Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs - Shanghai Gold Song Festival" in Shanghai, including the RTHK Vinyl Pop Up and the Cantopop Party, etc., to enhance the status of local pop music in the Chinese-speaking music scene, use music to tell Hong Kong stories and promote cultural exchanges.

This year's awards concert was ingeniously designed, and RTHK invited musical director Tom Chan Yan Shek as the creative consultant to connect the "Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs" and the songs of guest performers Mike Tsang Pei Tat and Phil Lam Yik Hong in the form of "Musical Theater" to weave together six story chapters: "First Sight", "Confused", "Then", "Flame Break", "Imprint" and "Unknown". The highest honor, the "Golden Needle Award", was awarded to the musician Lowell Lo Koon Ting. He performed a number of classics, demonstrating the outstanding strength of a pioneer singer and film score master.

The CASH Best Creative Singer Gold Prize went to Lam Ka Him. He happily said, "This is the first time I won this award. Thank you to singers who like my creations and my family." He also won Excellent Pop singer and Gold Song with APRIL WHISPERS. Because he composed APRIL WHISPHERS he had 4 awards total. He said that last year he created an album he was very pleased with, fortunately it was sold out. "The album had a hidden track WHENEVER CHANGE HAPPENS. I want to thank Mr. Lo Kwok Jim. It was his work from around 50 years ago. Listening to it again 50 years later I still feel it is very touching and very great. Thank you to the singers, fans and family who like the album." Lam Ka Him was in a rush to return home and feed the dog, so he was sorry that he was unable to speak with the media. Silver prize recipient Fung Wan Him said, "This year is my 15th anniversary in the business. I am very happy to be able to work on a job I like: singing, composing and creating. I am the luckiest to have your (fans) support." Sweeping up 4 awards including the CASH Best Creative Singer and Excellent Pop Singer, he joked about not being able to win the Most Excellent Pop Singer Award, "Don't be too greedy in life, work hard and try again next year!" When asked how he would celebrate, Fung Wan Him answer, "I used to go home and have a burger, but I just got back from Canada and ate a lot. While working on a commercial I kept eating, so I really am a little fatter. The company told me to lose weight. (Do you have any plan to your 15th anniversary in the business?) I would probably celebrate with fans.

The event this year broke the tradition and brought out award winning singer in a musical format. The Most Improved Silver prize recipient Ashley Lin (Lam Hoi Ling) appeared in eye catching blue. The Most Promising Rookie silver prize recipient Amy Lo Wai Man appeared in a cowboy look. Yanting Chau dressed up like a race car driver and rapped the "Excellent Chinese Pop Song" GAME ON with endless cheer from the audience. "Best Band/Group" bronze prize girl group COLLAR only sent Sumling Li, Winka Chan and Gao Sham Ching Hau to represent them but received great treatment from the organizer RTHK as each got to appear on the stage for a solo performance. They said that other group mates had work and were unable to join them. Winka Chan earlier performed with boyfriend Chu Wan Pin for the first time, fortunately they did not argue. Her boyfriend was the organizer, so she joked that she had class concept and gave him a little respect.

MC Cheung Tin Fu was unable to attend but sent a video to share his feeling. "Thank you to every fan and listener who voted for me, every one of your vote has given me this award. Thank you to the behind the scene team for their effort, because this award is equivalent to everyone's recognition and is the greatest achievement. I am sorry I can't accept this award in person and witness this joyous event. In the coming days, I hope to be like this album title SWEET AND SOUR.
