[2023.06.15] CANTONESE FILM STAR CHEUNG YING CHOI PASSED AWAY AT AGE 88

A rumor of Cantonese film era star Cheung Ying Choi's passing surfaced yesterday. Veteran voice actor Ting Yu confirmed the news. He was 88. Someone online posted the Cheung Yin Choi yesterday passed away alone at a nursing home yesterday afternoon, without any family by his side. Ting Yu has known Cheung Ying Choi for over 60 years. In recent years after moving to the nursing home he no longer had any contact. Yesterday he learned from friends about Cheung's passing. The Cheung Ying Choi he knew was a great friend, only talk about the good and never the bad. If he was unhappy he would not talk about it much. Wu Fung did not know about Cheung Ying Choi's passing and the news was a surprise to him. He said that he worked with Cheung Ying Choi in the past. Cheung was Mr. Nice Guy and more reserved. Cheung Ying Choi made no contact after he stopped acting. The news of his passing was regrettable. Cheung Ying Choi was once rumored to be Stephanie Che Yuen Yuen's father. Che Yuen Yuen through her assistant replied to the media that she had no comment.

Cheung Ying Choi was born in Hong Kong in 1934 and was once enrolled in the Wah Yan College. At age 16 he joined the film industry, with his handsome appearance he worked on many roles. He made almost 200 movies, near 80 series and provided his voice to animation, series and films. Cheung Ying Choi starting in 1960 became one of Shaw's Cantonese film top young actors and was on par with Wu Fung, Lui Kei and others. Cheung Ying Choi's representative work included DIARY OF A CHAUVINISTIC HUSBAND (DAI JEUNG FU YUT GEI) and THE YOUNG BOSS OF THE FACTORY (GUNG CHONG SIU YEH). Later he made the jump to television, in 1970 he worked at TVB. Aside from working on series, he also provided his voice; in 2006 after completing WELCOME TO THE HOUSE (GO PUNG MOON JOR) and FATHERS AND SONS (BA BA BAI NGAI) he gradually eased out of the screen.
