[2025.01.03] THE LAST DANCE IS THE HONG KONG AND MACAU TOTAL BOX OFFICE CHAMPION OF 2024

THE LAST DANCE is not only the 2024 total box office champion, but also the highest grossing film in Hong Kong history.

Hong Kong films shone in 2024. The Emperor Motion Picture THE LAST DANCE (POR. DEI YUK) grosse HK$153 million in Hong Kong and Macau, winning the overall box office of the year and becoming the highest- grossing film in Hong Kong in history. However last year's box office was the lowest in nearly 13 years, but fortunately the box office of Hong Kong films was higher than Hollywood films for the first time since 2004.

The Hong Kong Box Office Co. Ltd. yesterday announced the 2024 Hong Kong and Maca film market's overall situation. According to the total film box office revenue, the total box office in 2024 exceeded HK $1.4 billion (HK$ 1,421,463,368, and HK$1,343,598,030 in Hong Kong), a decrease of 5.9% when compared with the total box office revenue of HK$ 1,510,664,143 (HK$1,432,996,395 in Hong Kong) in 2023 (Hong Kong fell by 6.2%). One of the movies THE LAST DANCE won the overall box office of the year and was even the highest-grossing film in Hong Kong's history, with a box office of HK$ 153,020,919 (HK$ 142,263,603 in Hong Kong) as of December 31st last year. Since the film is still in release, it has hope to climb even higher.

In second place of the year's box office was the hit TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING), which grossed HK$ 112,907,437 (HK$ 108,448,257 in Hong Kong); in third place was the Hollywood film INSIDE OUT 2, which earned HK$ 88,832,605 (HK$ 84,526,606 in Hong Kong). Still in release, CESIUM FALLOUT (FUN SING) collected HK$ 42,613,155 in Hong Kong and Macau and became the third highest grossing Hong Kong films last year; THE MOON THIEVES (DOH YUET JEH) collected HK$ 27,967,216 in Hong Kong and Macau, ranking fifth at the box office; still in release, PAPA in Hong Kong and Macau collected HK$ 20,204,601 and ranked ninth at the box office.

The 2024 Hong Kong box office set a new low in the past 13 years, as the box office revenue has regressed to 2011 (excluding the fact that no direct comparison couldn be made during the epidemic, the total box office revenue in Hong Kong in 2011 was HK$ 1,392,173,468; which was still 3.5% higher than that in 2024). Obviously the box office revenue of films in 2024 was not ideal, but it was higher than Hollywood films for the first time since 2004. The total revenue of Hong Kong films was 5.5% higher than that of Hollywood films.

The top 10 highest grossing Hong Kong films in 2024 in order were THE LAST DANCE, TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN, CESIUM FALLOUT, TABLE FOR SIX 2 (FAN HEI GUNG SUM 2), THE MOON THIEVES, WE 12 (12 GWAI DOH), ROB N ROLL (LUM SI GIP ONG), CRISIS NEGOTIATORS (TAM POON JUEN GA), PAPA and LOVE LIES (NGOR TAM DIK NA CHEUNG LUEN OI). THE LAST DANCE, CESIUM FALLOUT and PAPA are still in release. The top 10 highest grossing non Hong Kong films in 20214 in order were INSIDE OUT 2, DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE, DESPICABLE ME 4, DUNE: PART 2, ALIEN: ROMULUS, GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE, SPY X FAMILY CODE: WHITE, KUNG FU PANDA 4, DORAEMON THE MOVIE: NOBITA'S EARTH SYMPHONY, and KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.
