The 69-year-old director Johnnie To Kei Fung has been making films for more than 40 years, with countless works, 3 Hong Kong Film Awards and 3 Golden Horse Awards for Best Director. His production has been significantly reduced in recent years, and his most recent film is CHASING DREAM in 2019. In an interview with BBC News Chinese last year, he revealed that due to the impact of the Hong Kong environment, he was at a low ebb in his life and lost his soul. He wanted to make films, but he could not start writing. He had a lot of doubts, but he was not out of talent; in 2010 he has conceived the 3rd installment of ELECTION (HAK SEH WUI). In the end he felt that the social climate was not suitable and put it on hold. Japan's "Hokkaido Shimbun" recently reported that To Kei Fung would start making a film around Hong Kong gangster conflicts. The lead actor would be Tony Leung, who has not worked with him in 27 years.
According to the report, To Kei Fung's new film would mainly film in Hokkaido and is expected to be released in 2027. Reportedly he has begun to scout locations in Sapporo and other places for the new film the day before yesterday. When To Kei Fung attended a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York last year, he revealed that he has started filming a new film for two days, but then lost the feeling and could not continue. He hoped to complete it within six months after returning to Hong Kong. It was unknown if the new film that would start shooting in Japan was the same as the work that he started shooting for two days.
