TVB's annual event "TV Awards Presentation 2025" was held in
Macau the night before. Bosco Wong Chung Chak and Charmaine Sheh Sze
Man (Ah Sheh) won the "Best Actor and Actress" and the "Greater Bay
Area's Favorite TVB Actor and Actress", becoming a double Best Actor
and Actress. Eric Tsang Chi Wai received the newly added "Honorary Legend"
award. He received the award from his friend Alan Tam and immediately
announced his resignation as the general manager of TVB. He will serve
as the convener of the advisory committee in the future to continue to
contribute to TVB. Chi Wai admitted that he has been thinking about
resigning as the general manager of TVB for a long time, and he even
needed to resign five times before succeeding. He will return to
contribute to the film industry in the future.
Chi Wai was very grateful to see all of the colleagues standing
up in the audience when he accepted the award, as he was very touched to
be respected. He also was very grateful to his friend Alan Tam Wing Lun
for presenting him with the award, which also proved that his efforts in
the past 5 years have been recognized by everyone. It was also what he
wanted the most when he first joined TVB as an executive. He was able
to do what he wanted to do and considered the job done.
When asked Chi Wai how he would grade himself as a general
manager, and he smiled and said, "50 something points, iffy. Because I
don't do a good job in administration, I don't know how to manage.
There are many things I want to do but haven't done. TVB is a very big
cruise ship, ultimately it is running on gas and can't become electric
all at once. The greatest success is that many people praise the TVB
program for being very entertaining, and the advertisers have come back.
Actually I am just the prodigal son, responsible for spending money. I
don't know how to make money, but I make a program for companies to buy
advertising. The success of the programs can earn even more
advertising. The most important is for everyone to feel that
advertising on TVB has improved their businesses. At first when I
didn't know anything I spent like mad, after awhile on job I have
learned be thrifty!"
When asked if the company has tried to retain him, Chi Wai said,
"They have tried to retain many times, but I succeeded the fifth time.
I was told not to even think about it and kept getting kicked out of the
door before. This time I said with a lot of certainty, the main reason
why I decided to resign this time is that my children want me to rest
more. I have already cultivated a great group of people to succeed me.
I also wanted to help the company with some new developments, so I would
not sever ties with the company completely." As for the selection of
the general manager's successor, Chi Wai said that the decision would be
up to TVB Chairman Hui To. He have made suggestions but did not give
any clear choice. When asked about the members of the new advisory
committee, Chi Wai said that he would announce it when he found suitable
candidates, emphasizing that he would not pry people away from the
company and would look for more different talents to participate in the
creation. He would continue to share his philosophy of making TV.
Chi Wai said that the 5 years of working at TVB has been neither
long nor short, and he felt that the most suitable time to announce the
news of the change was at the award ceremony. "I came back mainly to
share my experience, and my colleagues have understood what I wanted to
share. I think it is time to retire, actually I have started to take a
vacation over a month ago. I only return to the company once a week for
a meeting until the middle of the month, 5 years ago I started on
January 21st, and this year on January 21st I will officially leave. I
promised that the company that as a consultant I might come back for
meetings every month, because I still have some future developments I
want to do with TVB."
Although Chi Wai denied that he was unwell and had to resign, he
stated that he was not used to the normal business hours. He said, "The
only thing I am not used to being a general manager is to have meetings
on time. In addition making TV is different from making movies. You
can rest after finishing one (movie), but you can't with television.
The job is basically endless. General manager has to be at meetings all
the time and can't be late. I am not used to starting meetings on time,
I have to sit at the company at 9:30 AM and has many meetings to host.
I don't get to be late, which to me is the roughest thing. Sometimes
meetings are even rougher than coming up with ideas. I also have to
handle administrative work, have a sense of responsibility, none of
which are things I like." He felt that only by resigning would he have
more opportunities to meet with viewers, with the general manager job he
could not perform many onscreen work. "Being a general manager has a
huge problem, which is whatever I do seems to represent TVB, so I can't
speak casually. I like to talk, talk irresponsibly and joke around.
TVB is a publicly traded company and could not speak casually. Then I
might as well return to be a free person, for me there is no
restriction. Instead I can bring even more joy to the audience."
Chi Wai said that he also has planned to return to the film
industry after stepping down. Ultimately he started in the film
industry. Seeing that the film market has been sluggish, he really
wanted to contribute more. "I haven't paid attention to movies for 5
years, so I feel I am a little out of touch. Actually film is the place
I have learned the most and have the most interest in when he entered
show business. I want to return to make movies. I haven't worked with
many directors, I want to make some Hong Kong movies and reconnect with
the Hong Kong audience. I haven always liked acting, it is an interest
and an enjoyment. As for directing and producing I do them out of a
sense of duty and responsibility to the business. Cultivating new
directors, making new subjects are also what I like to do the most."
