The 32nd Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards earlier announced its winners. Louis Koo Tin Lok and Fish Liew Chi Yu won Best Actor and Best Actress. Best Film went to the so-called "urban legend" CIAO UFO (JOI GEIN UFO). Yesterday the Film Critic Society held a public forum at Causeway Bay to give the public an understanding behind the awards and the recommended films, discuss the reasons and key points. Member film critics Yip Chak Sing, Tsang Siu Wan, Cheuk Nam and Cheung Wai Hung were the speakers.
The speakers revealed that there were questions about the film critic society having 10 recommended films in the past but only 6 this year. They explained that every year the recommended film quantity was different. Award winning films would not need special recommendations. They felt that last year's film quality was weak in comparison. Several "urban legend" movies aside from CIAO UFO were truly iffy, among them SONS OF THE NEON NIGHT (FUNG LUM FOR SHAN) was one vote short of becoming a recommended film. They said that with the entire film market has been weak and poor, the critic society did not want to go too easy and hence only recommended 6 films. Members once discussed leaving certain categories vacant this year, in the end they voted to keep all the awards. Best Actor and Actress Koo Tin Lok and Liew Chi Yu won with many votes. Liew Chi Yu in SOMEONE LIKE ME (JEUNG NGOR JEH YEUNG DIK OI CHING) played a cerebral palsy patient, a difficult role that she has obviously put in the hard work to play. Hence she won with her acting; Koo Tin Lok in BEHIND THE SHADOWS (SI GA JING TAM) gave an outstanding performance. They stressed that he did not receive the award out of "respect", but from fair voting after individual testimonies and discussions.
